  • ‘J. Edgar’ trailer

    One of the great unknowns of the season (as I’ll get into momentarily with today’s Off the Carpet column) is Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar.” Well today, we finally get a glimpse of the film via the trailer at Apple. The first thing of note, naturally, is Leonardo DiCaprio’s accent, which seems to come in and out in just these few minutes. Also notable is the makeup, which I’ve been saying for a while will be transformative and most certainly something to watch for in that race. Finally, I’ve been hearing that Judi Dench gives the supporting performance to watch for, and that seems evident here.   • ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ trailer

    John Madden’s latest, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” is set for release. Contrary to rumor, it will stay on its March 9, 2012 release date (especially now that Fox Searchlight has filled its awards boat), but it nevertheless looks like the sort of film that could be a lighthearted awards play next year if they wanted it to be.   • ‘Barrymore’ trailer

    It’s been a bit slow on the whole for acquisitions at Toronto, but one film I’ve kept an eye on is “Barrymore” (which we pointed to over the weekend as a potential Oscar play for Christopher Plummer). It absolutely seems like a powerhouse performance, but man, it’ll be hard to sell a one-man show. I imagine that’s partly what’s stalling a sale.   • ‘Oranges & Sunshine’ trailer

    I feel like Guy was talking up Emily Watson’s performance in “Oranges & Sunshine” earlier in the year. I can’t remember. But the film tells the true story of the 300-year practice of sending poor or orphaned children to British settler colonies to help alleviate the shortage of labor. It’s the other pony in Cohen Media Group’s Oscar stable (after yesterday’s acquisition of “The Lady”), and today, courtesy of Thompson on Hollywood, we get our first look at the trailer.   • ‘We Bought a Zoo’ trailer

    Just in time to capitalize on Scarlett Johansson’s nude photo scandal (that was low, sorry), the trailer for Cameron Crowe’s latest, “We Bought a Zoo,” hits the web. The first half of this early glimpse really makes it look like a return to character study form for Crowe, while the second half lays on the heavy saccharine (I winced at “I like the animals, but I love the humans”). So the proof will be in the pudding, as they say, but Matt Damon looks to be giving a solid performance here and, well, I’ll try to remain positive.   • ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ US trailer

    I’m hoping to see Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” soon-ish. It has a solid track out of Venice for a spot as the thinking man’s Best Picture play (especially considering the British vote). The US trailer sets up the intrigue nicely for those on these shores, nevertheless opting to go back to the international teaser and that awesome music from Danny Elfman’s score for “The Wolfman” at the top.   • ‘Margaret’ trailer

    If it seems like we’ve been waiting forever to see Kenneth Lonergan’s “Margaret,” that’s because we’ve been waiting forever to see Kenneth Lonergan’s “Margaret.” Featuring a pre-“True Blood” Anna Paquin and Matt Damon, among an eclectic cast, the film has sat on a shelf for, what, six years? It’s finally getting a release this year from Fox Searchlight, and the trailer recently debuted at Apple. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

  • ‘The Artist’ trailer

    Guy offered up the new poster for Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist” yesterday. Today we get a look at the trailer for the film, which played at Cannes, is set for Toronto and will more than likely pop up in Telluride, too. The first Gurus chart of the year had it very much in contention for a Best Picture nomination, so you can count this as one of the big possibilities of the upcoming season.   • ‘Blackthorn’ trailer

    Things were looking up for the western after “True Grit” pulled in solid bank last year. But after “Cowboys & Aliens” took a massive dump at the box office this summer, well…I’m trying to keep the faith. We have a few projects on the way, others still percolating. One of them is Mateo Gil’s “Blackthorn,” featuring Sam Shepard as Butch Cassidy and proceeding from the premise that the famed outlaw made it out of Bolivia alive.   • ‘Carnage’ trailer

    I’ve been somewhat reserved on Roman Polanski’s “Carnage” for a while now, mainly because the cast doesn’t really seem all that right to me. I caught the play on Broadway a few years back, and it’s an amazing piece of work. You might recall I was particularly impressed with (and totally crushing on) Hope Davis back in 2009, and I’d have loved to see at least someone from the original ensemble carried over. Alas. But Polanski is a great fit for the material in an odd way and judging by the trailer, which I believe hit via Twitch, it looks like Kate Winslet is the stand-out in Davis’s role.   • ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ UK trailer

    Okay, so we featured the decent French trailer for Lynne Ramsay’s blinding comeback feature only a few days ago, but this excellent one from UK distributor Artificial Eye does a better job of distilling the film’s complicated essence: it captures a measure of the film’s cruel wit, as well as Ramsay’s typically off-kilter sensory details. Those sprinklers heard at the trailer’s outset, by the way, will not leave your mind for days after seeing the film. It premiered yesterday at The Guardian — click on the image to watch it there, or check out the embed after the cut.

  • French trailer and poster for ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’

    As some you will remember, I flipped for Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need To Talk About Kevin” back in May, and the film has yet to work its way out from under my skin. The film is heading into its second festival phase, build on its Cannes buzz at Toronto and perhaps Telluride. (It’s sure to have a high-profile gala spot at the London Film Festival too.) We’re still awaiting the US and UK marketing, but for the impatient, French distributor Diaphana has put out an intelligently cut trailer that does a pretty good job of conveying the stylized, sensually led approach Ramsay has taken to the material — but keeps the lid on Tilda Swinton’s Oscar-ready performance.   • ‘Twixt’ trailer

    Now that Francis Ford Coppola’s experimental film “Twixt” has been announced for a Toronto premiere, the trailer has hit the web (via TIFF’s You Tube page). It’s largely composed of the footage we saw at Comic-Con, which was lived-edited into two different assemblages during the panel there. That’s Tom Waits narrating, by the way.   • ‘Like Crazy’ trailer

    One film Paramount is high on for the awards season (and is surely a breath of fresh air for the awards team, given its indie sheen) is Drake Doremus’s “Like Crazy.” The film already played Sundance and was a big hit there, so perhaps a slow burn through the season will get it some more attention.   • ‘The Ides of March’ trailer

    George Clooney’s “The Ides of March” is set for a Venice premiere in September. It may or may not make it to Telluride, but in any case, I’ve been hearing lately that Evan Rachel Wood and Philip Seymour Hoffman are killer in the film. (Marisa Tomei, I’m told, doesn’t figure in as much.) Anyway, judging by the new trailer at Yahoo! Movies, it has me at “Hello.” We might be talking about this one throughout the season.

  • COMIC-CON: ‘Haywire’ trailer

    I missed Relativity’s panel featuring Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire” and the John-Cusack-as-Edgar-Allan-Poe flick “The Raven.” This was very much a bummer, seeing as “Haywire” star Gina Carano has been a personal crush ever since she suited up as, well, Crush, in the rebooted American Gladiators. So the trailer, released via Apple, is the first of the footage I’ve seen. I’m not quite sure why Soderbergh is bathing in the warm water of commercial plays lately (this and “Contagion”), but I’ll give it a look. Nothing is standing out, though. Other than my…crush.   • ‘Drive’ red-band trailer

    As you can see from the previous post, Kris is every bit as punch-drunk on Nicolas Winding Refn’s electric throwback thriller “Drive” as I was at Cannes — read my review here — where it deservedly won the Best Director prize. It stands as my favourite narrative feature of the year so far; the rest of 2011 would have to be nothing short of miraculous to dislodge it from my year-end Top 10. Anyway, on the heels of last night’s Comic-Con screening comes a neatly assembled red-band trailer via IGN — and as sleek, smart and propulsive a taster as it is, it still can’t quite capture what a rush the film is. I’d almost recommend saving yourself for the full movie, but who am I kidding? Click on the image to watch it at IGN, or check out the embed after the cut.

  • ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ trailer

    One more treat before I head down the coast: the trailer for Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.” I’d like to be excited for this, but even with the tonal shift to the incredibly sincere, the whole enterprise just feels so painfully redundant. That’s what happens when you leach on to a proven property so you don’t lose the rights, I guess. I do dig the POV stuff at the end, though. Sony’s fourth stab at the character hits next summer. The panel is Friday (I’ll miss it — no big loss). So I imagine you’ll all be hearing more about this one in the coming days. Check out the full trailer via Yahoo! Movies after the jump.
