French trailer and poster for ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’

Posted by Guy Lodge · 10:39 am · August 8th, 2011

As some you will remember, I flipped for Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need To Talk About Kevin” back in May, and the film has yet to work its way out from under my skin. The film is heading into its second festival phase, build on its Cannes buzz at Toronto and perhaps Telluride. (It’s sure to have a high-profile gala spot at the London Film Festival too.) We’re still awaiting the US and UK marketing, but for the impatient, French distributor Diaphana has put out an intelligently cut trailer that does a pretty good job of conveying the stylized, sensually led approach Ramsay has taken to the material — but keeps the lid on Tilda Swinton’s Oscar-ready performance. The poster, however, could use some improvement. Check them out after the jump, via Bleeding Cool. (Thanks to reader Jim T for the tip.)

I just finished the novel and was completely stunned. Incredible stuff that I think can only be elevated by Ramsay and Swinton. I can’t wait to see the final product. Easily my most anticipated of the Fall.

The poster’s not bad looking, but it’s generic. For now I’ll stay clear from the trailer, I wanna watch this movie without any hints or spoilers.

Still one of my most anticipated films of the year, with potential to be top of the tops. A fan of both Ramsay’s previous films, I still think she made an evolutionary leap from Ratcatcher to Morvern… and this looks to be an even more intricate and sensuous experience than either.

Let’s say Swinton gets noticed this time, I still think it’ll end up like at least Rabbit Hole. Despite having strong performances by other co-stars and good script, the film will only carry Swinton’s name this time around.

Normally, I wouldn’t go for this… a little unsettling to say the least but I have such respect for Ramsay (and Swinton), especially after making the nearly unreadable Morvern Callar (OK, the first 20 pages are good…) into a highly watchable film.

ALSO, no love for John C. Reilly in the poster?? WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?

Reilly’s role is pretty small — Swinton and Miller are the co-leads. The poster has it right.

is this as good as Rosemary’s Baby?

I really don’t think that’s a relevant comparison — the horror here is social, not supernatural. Anyway, how many films are as good as Rosemary’s Baby? ;)

Speaking only for myself, that’s an even better sales pitch than the trailer or the poster. (Can’t wait, obviously.)

This! I had the same thought. I really feel it’s going to be all about Swinton just like it was all about Kidman last year. At least, it will get some recognition…

I think aside from Swinton hopefully scoring a nod, there’s a dark horse chance for the adapted screenplay to weasel its way into the nominees as well.

I guess this is to anyone who has seen it, but how much is the film like the trailer, in terms of tone more than anything else?

If it’s like the trailer, it has become my most anticipated film this year.

Ramsay and Swinton….I think that might just be as good a pairing as Ramsay and Morton! Cannot wait to see this…!

Here are some thoughts on the film adaptation of the novel:
