‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ UK trailer

Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:16 pm · August 13th, 2011

Okay, so we featured the decent French trailer for Lynne Ramsay’s blinding comeback feature only a few days ago, but this excellent one from UK distributor Artificial Eye does a better job of distilling the film’s complicated essence: it captures a measure of the film’s cruel wit, as well as Ramsay’s typically off-kilter sensory details. Those sprinklers heard at the trailer’s outset, by the way, will not leave your mind for days after seeing the film. It premiered yesterday at The Guardian — click on the image to watch it there, or check out the embed after the cut.

Much, much better than the French trailer. Creepy and unsettling.

    I’m creeped out. Good times.

Guy, where does this performance line up with you with the rest of Tilda’s career roles?

I actually want to see it again before answering that question. I was so overwhelmed by Ramsay’s vision on my first viewing that I found myself watching Swinton more in terms of how she served her director’s concept — brilliantly, I might add — than in relation to her other work. She’s so ideally cast that the performance almost creates itself in your head, but she interestingly undercuts such instincts with a lassitude, a sense of defeat, she brings to the character that we aren’t necessarily used to seeing from such an alert actor. It’s up there with her best work, in any event.

I don’t know, I’ve had the fortune of watching this excellent film and I can’t help but feel that these trailers are just not nailing down the tone. That could be a good thing as I think people expecting something out of the trailers would be pleasantly surprised by the film but there’s just something they’re not getting right.

As for Tilda, I do honestly think it’s her best performance and that’s really saying something. I do think it’s interesting in regard to both her and Dunst’s performances (both seeming to be the most talked about actress performances at this year’s festivals) that both of their performances were kind of overshadowed by the work of their respective visionary directors.

    Stunning trailer. Just…wow.

Anyone else freaked out by Miller’s “people like me” voiceover monologue?

I think this is a much better trailer than the international one, which was sort of unfocused.
Here are some thoughts about the book-to-screen adaptation of WNTTAK:

Late on viewing this, but now my excitement’s been amplified. Swinton looks incredible, and here’s hoping this time she doesn’t get robbed of a second nomination. Chilling film, it seems like, and easily my most anticipated of this year.
