  • ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ teaser trailer

    ZOMG! Okay, here it is, in official form. I have to fess up and admit I watched the sketchy bootleg last week. But it’s nice to finally get a clear gander, and really, it’s nicely achieved, I think, given that there likely wasn’t a lot of footage to pull from and this raises the stakes for the series with just a brief exchange. I have no idea what is up with that chant, though.   • ‘Hugo’ trailer

    Annnnddd…another trailer. This one for the hotly anticipated “Hugo,” from Martin Scorsese. And a film that really should have had some sort of presence at Comic-Con, I think, especially with folks like Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg making the trip. It just would’ve been a treat. In any case, some have awards doubts on this one due to the children’s movie aspect, but I’m not sure that’s real cause to doubt just yet. One thing we can certainly tell by the trailer, which just hit Apple, is that the design elements are off the chain. I can’t wait to see this one in 3D, and I don’t say that often (if ever).   • ‘John Carter’ teaser trailer

    Tons of trailers in the lead-up to Comic-Con this week. Today, it’s Andrew Stanton’s live-action debut, “John Carter” (which won’t have a presence at Comic-Con because Disney wants to be competitive with its D23 event). I’m not too sure about this one, and I think the reasoning for diminishing the brand appeal by shortening the title from “John Carter of Mars” is flimsy at best.   • ‘Contagion’ trailer

    Warner Bros. showed Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” to a handful of journalists a few weeks ago. I wasn’t on the cool-kids list for that, but I hear the film is a cross between “Traffic” and the first half of “The Stand,” or whatever happened before “The Road,” or some such. That’s basically the vibe we get from the trailer, which just landed at Apple. The film is set for a September 9 release and looks to be a commercial play more than anything else, but personally, I can’t get Wolfgang Peterson’s “Outbreak” out of my head every time I think of it.   • ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ trailer

    I dug Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” enough two years back. I thought it had the best production design of that year and a brilliant score to boot. Both were recognized at the Oscars. Judging by the trailer for “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” just-premiered at Apple, the design is richly detailed once again. I’m left a bit cold overall, mainly because I have literally no idea what’s going on (beyond the fact that Jared Harris looks predictably awesome as Moriarty).   • ‘The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn’ international trailer

    Last week’s Oscar Talk podcast dug into the possibilities of “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” in the Best Animated Feature Film category, while last Monday’s Off the Carpet column spent plenty of time mulling over 2011 as the year of Steve Spielberg.   • ‘The Iron Lady’ international teaser trailer

    The Weinstein Company has a handful of possibilities in this year’s Oscar season. As usual, we can expect the boys to sit back and wait for a contender to survive Darwin-style before doubling down, but one element of “The Iron Lady” everyone expects to have no trouble finding a nomination is Meryl Streep’s performance as Margaret Thatcher. The recent teaser trailer (launched at The Guardian) builds on the expectation that it’s a transformative turn. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.   • ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ international teaser trailer

    Tomas Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In” follow-up “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a film I’ve very much looking for. On paper, it looks like a dream, and judging by the freshly premiered international trailer (courtesy of The Guardian), the film appears to be a tightly wound potboiler that might electrify this Oscar season. Focus Features will be distributing and I think Gary Oldman could have a decent shot at that elusive first Oscar nomination.   • ‘War Horse’ teaser trailer

    A Spanish version of this leaked earlier tonight, but I wanted to wait until something official dropped. And…chalk up your early frontrunner (for better or worse). The saccharine appears to be in place and the prestige is painted on thick. More next week when we offer up the year’s first set of predictions, but for now…pretty.   • ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ trailer

    It must be tricky to pull off a sub-title for a franchise that already features a colon, but anyway, this is a terrible trailer. It’s aimed at the “Fast Five” crowd, what with the glitz and Eminem, which immediately cheeses down the series (a series I kind of dig, to be honest), and that’s before we get to the terrible structure (What’s with the random Renner plot point beat?). And nothing about this seems to indicate that an artist like Brad Bird is at the wheel, but whatever. That’s marketing for you.   • ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ trailer

    I’ll be updating Oscar shenanigans with some predictions and charts in a week and a half, and in them, you’ll see that of all the superhero movies this year, I’m counting on “Captain America: The First Avenger” to be the one that registers much at all with the Academy. We’ll see if that pans out, but for now, the final trailer has been released via Yahoo! Movies, and it has some impressive strokes.   • ‘A Dangerous Method’ UK trailer

    Yesterday, news dropped of the Venice Film Festival’s opening film; now, with the first look at David Cronenberg’s Lido-bound latest (courtesy of Empire), the autumn festival season is starting to feel alarmingly close. Given the hot cast and the highbrow material, many have been pegging this as a likely Oscar player, despite the fact that Cronenberg (even in period dress) has never caught the Academy’s fancy. My personal hope is that the film is as Oscar-unfriendly as possible — after two accomplished but straightforward genre spins, I’d love to see the director tap into his kinky side again. As is my usual practice these days, I’m not watching the trailer, so I’ll just have to wait and see. You, however, can share your thoughts below.   • ‘Moneyball’ trailer

    Yesterday there was an Entertainment Tonight sneak peek at the trailer for Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball,” based on the best-selling book with a screenplay by Steve Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin and starring Brad Pitt and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It has all the pieces to make it LOOK like an awards play, but it’s still to be seen if it reaches those heights. The full version of the trailer has dropped via Yahoo! Movies.   • ‘Tabloid’ trailer

    One of the most compelling films I saw at last year’s Telluride Film Festival was Errol Morris’s new documentary, “Tabloid.” The film is “masterful work with Morris’s trademark sense of humor splattered all over it,” I wrote at the time. “One of his best films in years.” I’m looking forward to seeing it again. Sundance Selects picked the film up for US release and Apple has just debuted the trailer. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

  • ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ green band trailer

    Last week, a curious “leak” of the red band trailer for David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” trailer hit the web. Sony left it up until yesterday, when it was promptly pulled, likely in anticipation of the somewhat cleaned up green band trailer that Apple has released today. It’s pretty much the same footage, with a few more extreme images replaced. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

  • ‘The Whistleblower’ trailer

    One film with reported Oscar potential that was left without a buyer at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival was Larysa Kondracki’s “The Whistleblower.” Rachel Weisz has a lot to work with and, by most accounts, gives a stellar performance in the film. Samuel Goldwyn Films eventually picked it up and it’s set for an August 5 release date. The trailer has popped up via Apple.   • ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ red band trailer

    UPDATE (5/31): Sony has pulled the trailer offline, just in time for the official green band version to drop (which it did, in what looks like a legit leak, but we’ll wait for Apple or whatever to deliver before passing it along).

    I was going to refrain from posting the recently “leaked” trailer for David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but there is some talk out there that it might have been a controlled leak, a bit of a marketing stunt. (And after all, no moves have been made to take it down.) If so, I TOTALLY dig it. The material itself already seems to indicate Fincher is back to his grungy days, and maybe having more fun than ever. A little shaky in-theater recording of what will be cleaned up a bit for Thursday’s official green band trailer launch adds to the flavor.   • ‘The Descendants’ trailer

    As soon as the wheels started turning on 2011 Oscar season considerations, I was thinking Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” could be a big player. Fox Searchlight could have another healthy slate this year and the studio has clearly caught and maintained its prestige stride. The trailer for the film dropped recently via Apple.
