  • Duvall, Bening latest honorees for Hollywood fest

    The press release, in part:

    The 14th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, presented by Starz, are pleased to announce that Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening will be honored with the “Hollywood Actress Award” and Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall will receive the “Hollywood Actor Award” at the festival’s Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.

    “It is a privilege to honor and to celebrate Annette Bening’s and Robert Duvall’s extraordinary talent as well as remarkable work and to recognize their outstanding acting achievements,” said Carlos de Abreu, Founder of the Hollywood Awards Gala.

    The gala ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 25, 2010.

  • ‘127 Hours,’ ‘Social Network’ up for Hollywood fest honors

  • Rockwell, Carter, Garfield, Wasikowska tapped for HFF honors

    On the heels of last week’s introductory announcement, it has been announced that Sam Rockwell, Helena Bonham Carter, Andrew Garfield and Mia Wasikowska will be recognized at this year’s Hollywood Film Festival awards.  The press release, in part:

    The 14th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, presented by Starz, are pleased to announce honorees who will be recognized for their achievements at the festival’s Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.

    Academy Award-nominated actress Helena Bonham Carter will receive the “Hollywood Supporting Actress Award,” actor Sam Rockwell will be honored with the ” Hollywood Supporting Actor Award, ” actress Mia Wasikowska will receive the ” Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award, ” and actor Andrew Garfield will be recognized with the ” Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award. ”

  • Zimmer, Pfister, ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Iron Man 2’ kick off the season

    The first awards of the Oscar season have been announced for Carlos de Abreu’s Hollywood Film Festival.  Hans Zimmer will get some love for his “Inception” score, while Wally Pfister will be recognized for his work behind the camera on the film.  Meanwhile, “Toy Story 3” and “Iron Man 2” have been singled out for exemplary animation and visual effects respectively.  Check out last year’s list of winners here.  The press release, in part:

    The 14th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, presented by Starz, are pleased to announce that composer Hans Zimmer, will be given the “Hollywood Film Composer Award,” cinematographer Wally Pfister, A.S.C., will receive the “Hollywood Cinematographer Award,” Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 3,” directed by Lee Unkrich and produced by Darla K. Anderson, will receive the “Hollywood Animation Award,” and Paramount Pictures’ “Iron Man 2” and visual effects supervisors Ben Snow and Janek Sirrs will receive the “Hollywood Visual Effects Award.”

    “We are honored to have these exceptionally talented artists honored for their outstanding work and creative vision at this year’s festival,” said Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards.

    The festival and awards will mark their return on October 20 for a week long series of screenings, competitions and awards. The Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 25, 2010.

  • ‘Star Trek,’ ‘White Ribbon’ round out Hollywood Film Awards

    (from left) Chris Pine and Karl Urban in Star TrekThe publicity stunt that is the Hollywood Film Awards came and went last night.  Nearly all of the winners had been previously announced, but “Star Trek” took the Hollywood Film Award after being voted upon by the public at large, while “The White Ribbon” took the Hollywood World Award.

    Here is the full slate of winners, the sounding gun of the Oscar season, maybe, or just a craven publicity grab.  You be the judge.  David Poland and Anne Thompson have certainly let their opinions be known.

  • Waltz, Frechette tapped by Hollywood fest, plus world awards

    Christoph WaltzThe list of Hollywood Film Festival award winners is winding down.  Today’s announcement brings the Hollywood Supporting Actor prize for Christoph Waltz in “Inglourious Basterds,” making this officially the widest possible net festival brass could have cast.  But Waltz will be going into the season with two wins under his belt already, here and in Cannes, so it’s safe to say we have a frontrunner in the supporting actor category (until Stanley Tucci comes along in a few months, that is).

    Meanwhile, Father Rick Frechette will receive the festival’s Hollywood Humanitarium Award.  From the press release:

    Father Rick Frechette is currently the Director of Medical Services of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos International and a priest who has devoted his life to the medical needs of children in the Caribbean and around the world. He is NPH’s Regional Director of the Caribbean, the Haiti home’s National Director and a member of the NPH International Health Services Team, which oversees the medical needs of the children in nine countries.

    To make a difference, Frechette went to medical school to learn how to minister to the children’s physical needs, which resulted in his medical degree in 1998 from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and his becoming a general practitioner licensed in New York and Florida. “The poor people have scant access to medical care. Even if they are lucky enough to get evaluated at a clinic, both scarcity of medicines and their relatively high prices prevent their getting treatment. Our own working conditions, especially in the poorest areas of Port-au-Prince, are tragic and are deplorable. We have little water, no electricity, few medicines and supplies,” says the doctor-priest.

    • Speaking of festivals, the AFI Fest unveiled its own complete lineup, with “Fox” and “A Single Man” as its bookends.

    • This week’s edition of The Long Shot considered the extensive possibilities for black, gay and female filmmakers in this year’s awards race.

    • With actors like Meryl Streep and Christopher Plummer straddling lead and supporting territory this year, we addressed the awards category shuffling that may lie ahead.

  • Hilary Swank tapped for lead actress award by Hollywood fest

    Hilary Swank in AmeliaWe’re slowly rounding out the list of honorees at this year’s Hollywood Film Festival, a slate of “winners” that I’d be inclined to call the result of, well, hard-working publicists getting the word out on their clients rather than honest-to-God consideration of artistic merit, but hey, tis the season.

    Today, Hilary Swank has been announced as the recipient of the Hollywood Actress Award for her work in the upcoming (and, nine days before released, still unscreened outside of a handful of people) “Amelia.” She joins Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore in the major acting awards camp.  We’re still waiting on the announcement of the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award.

    The gala ceremony will take place October 26 in Beverly Hills.  Also right around the corner is the Gotham Awards.  We’re wading out into it now.  Check out the full list of presently announced Hollywood Film Fest winners after the jump.

  • Hollywood Film Fest to honor Moore, Cooper, Kavanaugh

    Julianne MooreNew awards announced today via press release include Julianne Moore for the Hollywood Supporting Actress Award (for “A Single Man,” among other films), Bradley Cooper for the Hollywood Comedy Award (something had to go, by proxy, to “The Hangover,” I guess) and Ryan Kavanaugh for the Hollywood Producer Award.

    Additionally, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Melanie Lynsky, Paul Schneider and Zachary Quinto have been selected for the Hollywood Spotlight Awards, making the whole thing a giant grab-bag for all.

  • De Niro to be honored by Hollywood fest

    Robert De Niro in Everybody's FineWe’ve brought you up to speed on the list of Hollywood Film Festival award honorees the last few weeks (full list after the jump).  But today we get the news that Robert De Niro has been tapped to receive the Hollywood Actor Award, adding some steam to his bid for a lead actor Oscar nomination for “Everybody’s Fine.”

    Of course, who knows what the virtual dismantling of Miramax will do to planned Oscar campaigns, but this is a nice added boost as the actor heads into the season looking for his first Oscar nomination in 17 years.  Fest director Carlos de Abreu is quoted in the press release:

    Robert De Niro is an American icon. Not only is he highly regarded for his body of work as an actor, producer and director, but also for the passion, integrity and dedication he brings to his performances on camera, as well as his intense off-camera preparation and study of the characters he brings to life. His performance in the upcoming film “Everybody”s Fine” is outstanding and flawless.

    The ceremony will take place October 26.  We’re still waiting to hear about the Hollywood Actress Award winner, which will likely be Meryl Streep.

  • WEEKLY WRAP: Foreign contenders and underdogs

    James McAvoy in The Last Station• The deadline for Best Foreign Language Film entries passed, as Israel and Italy bucked conventional wisdom with their selections.

    • Among the better-received contenders, however, were major festival prizewinners from Australia and Greece. A full list of submissions here.

    • As the smaller studios beef up their Oscar prospects, this week’s Off the Carpet column wondered if this could be the year of the underdog.

    • Speaking of which, Sony Pictures Classics acquired “The Last Station,” a potential awards vehicle for Helen Mirren amongst others.

  • Bigelow, Ephron, ‘Up,’ ‘Transformers’ to be honored at Hollywood fest

    Kathryn Bigelow on the set of The Hurt LockerThe awards keep coming for “The Hurt Locker” director Kathryn Bigelow, who is already set to be feted at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.  As her film’s star Jeremy Renner takes down the Breakthrough Actor award at the upcoming Hollywood Film Festival, Bigelow herself will receive the Hollywood Director Award, fest director Carlos de Abreu announced today.

    Elsewhere, Nora Ephron, whose “Julie & Julia” screenplay really did wonders with a troublesome book, will be honored with the Hollywood Screenwriter Award, while “Up” will received the Hollywood Animation Award.

    The Hollywood Visual Effects Award will go to Scott Farrar, visual effects supervisor for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

    The awards are set to take place on October 26 in Beverly Hills, but the most significant tip of the hat here is obviously Bigelow.  Is there any real doubt that the Academy would be really stretching to go against the grain if they didn’t acknowledge her work on “The Hurt Locker?” Anything can happen, but I’d be shocked if members missed this opportunity.

  • WEEKLY WRAP: Festival pick-ups, the season’s fetes and the PGA’s 10

    Robert Duvall in Get Low• We wrapped up Toronto as Lee Daniels’s “Precious” took the festival’s audience award, putting it on a solid track for Oscar.

    • We got a look at the first trailer for “Harry Brown,” which may or may not be an awards film for actor Michael Caine.  John, you’ll recall, isn’t feeling it.

    • We saw ‘Meatball’ dominance at the box office in this weekend’s Sunday Cents column.

    • This week’s Off the Carpet column kicked off our weekly Oscar coverage with a call for perspective on the perceived Best Picture frontrunners, while a new weekly column from across the pond — The Long Shot — introduces a different perspective mid-week.

  • Mulligan, Renner, Daniels, Sidibe, Neustadter, Webb to receive Hollywood film fest awards

    Jeremy Renner in The Hurt LockerThe Hollywood Film Festival has become just another stop on the awards campaign trail these days, various publicists getting in the ears of festival directors to make sure their clients get their (in most cases deserved) props as the season takes hold, amping up the exposure, etc.  So with that in mind, the list of award recipients for this year’s Hollywood Film Festival have been announced.

    Carey Mulligan and Jeremy Renner will receive the Breakthrough Actress and Breakthrough Actor awards, having made an impact in “An Education” and “The Hurt Locker” respectively.  Mulligan seems a cinch for a lead actress Oscar nomination, while Renner, in the typically more competitive lead actor category, may be somewhat on the bubble.

    Lee Daniels will receive the Breakthrough Director Award for “Precious,” while the film’s star, Gabourey Sidibe, will received the New Hollywood Award.  Both deserve any and every awards notice they will get this season.

    Robert Pattinson, star of “Twilight,” which is set to be released on Nov. 21, was just as clueless in his acceptance speech for the new Hollywood award.

    “I’m shocked and astonished that I’ve been given an award before my film’s come out. It’s all hype,” he candidly admitted before thanking festival founder Carlos de Abreu.
