Elia Kazan sparks renewed interest

Posted by John Foote · 9:41 am · June 5th, 2009

So many of today’s youth have not seen films made before the year they were born and they are missing so much. I remember being 18 and spending some time with my girlfriend at the time at her job, which allowed for me to get a lot of reading done. One of her co-workers expressed [...]

Poking the Oscar stick at the distributorless

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:57 pm · March 31st, 2009

Michael Cieply, writing at The Carpetbagger (which, if you haven’t been aware, has been transformed into a year-round film blog at The New York Times rather than solely focusing on the awards season), has put up brief addressing a few titles that, as of yet, have no U.S. distributor but are very much on the [...]

INTERVIEW: ‘Appaloosa’ composer Jeff Beal

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:59 am · October 10th, 2008

Like a number of film music composers, Jeff Beal makes his home north of Los Angeles in the rocky, canyoned city of Agoura Hills.  One feels a sense of the old west before even seeing the ranch-style houses in his neighborhood and the tail-flipping horses tied out back.  Questions about his work on “Appaloosa,” Ed [...]

Bad…ass…

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 5:55 am · October 3rd, 2008

From yesterday’s feature with Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris at USA Today.  I think Ed is literally staring through my soul. Oh, and an FYI, keep an eye out later today for our interview with Jeff Beal, composer of “Appaloosa.”  Lots to chew on there from a nice 45-minute discussion last week.

TORONTO: Ed Harris on ‘Appaloosa,’ acting and film crticism

Posted by John Foote · 12:09 pm · September 7th, 2008

Walking into to interview with any actor/director can be a tad intimidating, even after 20 years of doing it.  They have a tendency to be…difficult.  But 30 minutes into my interview with Ed Harris, he pays me a compliment that could keep wind in my sails for the duration of the fest: “Thank you for [...]

TORONTO: ‘Burn After Reading,’ ‘Appaloosa,’ ‘Miracle at St. Anna’

Posted by John Foote · 11:55 am · September 6th, 2008

Rough day on the legs yesterday, a lot of walking.  Five films. One of them I will watch on DVD in the luxury of my room tonight, so four that I am running to, but hey, these are films I want to see, which always helps, right? I scanned the local papers for reaction to [...]

REVIEW: “Appaloosa” (**1/2)

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:27 am · September 5th, 2008

I don’t think it’s much of a secret around these parts that I really wanted to be on board for “Appaloosa.” I’m in love with the new resurgence of the western genre, even if I get irritated when people refer to “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” as evidence of it. [...]

‘Appaloosa’ art work continues to impress

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:20 pm · September 3rd, 2008

I really dug the one-sheet for Ed Harris’s “Appaloosa” that debuted a few weeks ago. There’s something about the monochrome grit of it all. And now it seems that New Line has released some banner art work for each of the four principle characters in the film. I stumbled onto them at Awards Daily (and [...]

Robert Parker’s ‘Appaloosa’

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:26 am · August 28th, 2008

Before I head out today on a whirlwind of pre-Toronto screenings that will take me away from the work at hand, I wanted to follow up last week’s brief comments on Robert Parker’s novel “Appaloosa,” which is being adapted for the screen by director Ed Harris this year (and will play at the festival next [...]

‘Appaloosa’ gets a poster…and a hell of a tagline, too!

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:40 am · August 8th, 2008

The trailer debuted earlier this week, and now we get a spiffy new one-sheet: I like it.  It’s simple, not TOO cliche, has a sense of danger to it.  But I ADORE the tag line.  “Feelings get you killed.”  How cold-blooded badass is that?! Check out the “Appaloosa” buzz page here.
