Updates to The Circuit

Posted by · 8:13 am · January 19th, 2011

A couple of things this morning. First, the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association has come out of clear, blue (fabulous) sky to dish out their honors — and “I Am Love,” therefore, joins the minimal chorus of Best Picture critics award winners. Meanwhile, “Exit Through the Gift Shop” won the top prize at last […]

Iowa critics add to ‘Network’ haul

Posted by · 9:11 am · January 13th, 2011

If I’m not mistaken, save for the International Film Music Critics (which is obviously geared toward music rather than filmmaking), the Iowa Film Critics have put a bow on this year’s critics’ awards circuit by dishing out a Best Picture honor to, well…what else? Onward through the guilds.  The American Cinema Editors (ACE) announce tomorrow […]

Updates to The Circuit

Posted by · 11:00 am · January 12th, 2011

A few things.  First, I don’t think I ever pointed out the Vancouver critics’ picks.  The DGA announced nominees for documentary filmmaking and Tyler Perry owned the NAACP Image Award nominations.

• “Toy Story 3” edges past “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Social Network” to take this year’s Golden Tomato Award. [Rotten Tomatoes] • Louis Virtel, meanwhile, wants to know why “Oscar zealots” aren’t fighting for the film’s Best Picture chances.  Uh, hello? [Movieline] • Sex and ballet slippers: the themes of “Black Swan.” […]

Updates to The Circuit

Posted by · 9:21 am · January 10th, 2011

Just a note, a few goings-on at The Circuit.  First up, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists have gone with “The Social Network” as the year’s best.  The North Texas Film Critics Association (Dallas-Fort Worth wasn’t good enough?) opted for “Inception.” Speaking of which, Christopher Nolan’s film predictably dominated the Visual Effects Society’s list of […]

‘Social Network’ wins NSFC

Posted by · 12:28 pm · January 8th, 2011

Sheep. Full list of winners at The Circuit. More admirable is this: “NSFC also issued a statement calling for a re-examination of the MPAA rating system and another condemning Iran’s recent sentencing of Iranian directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof.”

Central Ohio has its own brain

Posted by · 9:29 am · January 7th, 2011

I didn’t get around to mentioning this yesterday, but the Central Ohio Film Critics Association is the latest to stray (slightly) from the Fincher herd, opting for “Inception” as its Best Picture pick.  Check out the full list of winners at The Circuit.

Phoenix strays, too

Posted by · 9:50 am · December 29th, 2010

David Fincher’s “The Social Network” may be a firm fixture in my top 10, but any critics organization that opts out of flowing through the season like sheep is alright by me.  Yesterday, the Phoenix set joined those thin ranks by going with “The King’s Speech” for it’s Best Picture victor.

More updates to The Circuit

Posted by · 12:09 pm · December 23rd, 2010

Updating has been a bit sluggish.  Apologies.  The holidays.  You understand.  Today, three critics groups to mention, as the Austin folks admirably go with something different here, the Utah critics aren’t afraid of ties (and do well by properly placing Hailee Steinfeld and Lesley Manville) here and the Oklahoma critics file in with the usual […]

San Diego critics show how it’s done

Posted by · 4:36 pm · December 13th, 2010

For those keeping score at home, this is what an inspired and thoughtful set of nominations looks like. Sure, it’s as subjective as anything, so I’ll qualify it with “in my opinion.” And I’m not sure how many voting members there are (smaller groups yield more interesting collectives — usually). But I’m happy to see […]
