What’s so funny about a Best Director list that actually acknowledges the existence of world cinema?

I think he means the amount and severity of ties, which is indeed kind of hilarious.

Ah, right. I gather they’re a very small group.

I have to agree with Kris on this one.

Guy, I don’t care how passionate you are for “World Cinema” but if you saw the 4-way tie at the #9 spot and didn’t crack a smile, you are taking things entirely too seriously.

The whole “World cinema” comment wasn’t an insult by the way. And it should be clear that I certainly wasn’t laughing because it paid nods to foreign directors.

This is kind of offtopic: At the risk of coming off as jaded I’d say that while I applaud lists that include foreign films/talent it almost always feels like we are dealing with the same annoited group of films that manage to brake through.

It almost makes me wish the Academy increased their foreign list to ten. It would make perfect sense too.

I’m starting to think that Julianne Moore might actually get in Best Actress alongside Bening, Lawrence, Kidman and Portman. What with that fifth spot being wobbly and Manville not getting enough traction. But there’s still Michelle Williams, but who knows?
Also, I’m very pleased with the Best Supp Actress line-up at both the Online Critics and at Ohio. I would only replace Hershey with Kunis at the latter. Some groups just seem to not like Bonham-Carter’s performance, since they nominated her movie in all the big categories and Firth & Rush. Good! I don’t think that this is the year for a nomination gotten on the coat-tails of a movie. It’s just a very competative year and the fat should be trimmed.
    Just my thoughts.
