I’m finally getting around to buying a Blu-ray player, but I’m not sure I want to go the Playstation 3 route. I’m throwing it out to you guys. Any thoughts on good players? What’s working for you, what’s not, etc.

Technical problems… please stand by
UPDATED: Seems we’ve solved it. Something went technically awry with the last post … I blame the Golden Satellite Awards, personally. Anyway, we’ll get that information back up for you shortly.
EARLIER: No, your computer isn’t playing tricks on you. Something weird has happened to the formatting on the site — we’re looking into it.

To you and yours
I’m taking a serious vacation for the next four days. Minimal updates if any. I know, scandalous. A blogger taking the risk of losing traffic by ducking out for more than 24 hours. WTF?? But you know what? I deserve it. And you do too.
So go do what makes you happy and enjoy Thanksgiving. Not to get all corny, but I’m certainly thankful for the spike in interest this year and hope that readers new and old are getting something out of our little contribution. And I’m more than thankful to my modest staff of writers, doing what we can to keep you interested in the mundane particulars that inspire us to write. So thanks to Gerard, John, Guy, Brian and Blake.
We’ll reconvene next week. For now, I’m off to San Francisco for some much needed anti-L.A. time, so be safe, be merry, pop in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and soak it up. The Oscar crush is coming.

A sad day for the web
…the blame lies not with them but with shoddiness in the traditional news media and especially the blogosphere.
“With the 24-hour news cycle they rush into anything they can find,” said Mr. Mirvish, 40.
Mr. Gorlin, 39, argued that Eisenstadt was no more of a joke than half the bloggers or political commentators on the Internet or television.
An MSNBC spokesman, Jeremy Gaines, explained the network’s misstep by saying someone in the newsroom received the Palin item in an e-mail message from a colleague and assumed it had been checked out. “It had not been vetted,” he said. “It should not have made air.”
But most of Eisenstadt’s victims have been bloggers, a reflection of the sloppy speed at which any tidbit, no matter how specious, can bounce around the Internet. And they fell for the fake material despite ample warnings online about Eisenstadt, including the work of one blogger who spent months chasing the illusion around cyberspace, trying to debunk it.

Parting shot
Tapping into my inner Jeff Wells here for a bit, but I just came across this shot of our own Guy Lodge, which I took while we were enjoying a few pints in the Covent Garden area of London this summer. I lost my 80 gig iPod the very same day, not moments before Guy showed up. Heart breaking.
There is also a shot somewhere of Gerard Kennedy, drunk off his rocker on Canada Day near Trafalgar Square. I assure you, it was humorous. And wonderful blackmail material.

And with that, onward…
The final politics-oriented posts of the year have trickled down this evening, I swear. First thing tomorrow, it’s back to movies, Oscar and all the crazy things Hollywood.

Election jibber jabber
Have at it in this space. Though I have to say, I’m terribly frustrated with the conservative coverage of CNN. I understand the networks dropped the ball eight years ago, but Wolf and company are calling states 30 and 45 minutes after they’ve been called elsewhere. It’s difficult to watch something when you feel like you’re missing the news, so I’m making good use of DirecTV’s “election mix,” much like I enjoy multiple games on Sundays. MSNBC seems to be calling stuff with a little more haste, while Fox News, believe it or not, is finding a happy medium.
Also, a friend just mentioned an important point. How much does the choice of after-election party venue say about each respective candidate? Seriously, a posh, comfy hotel versus a community atmosphere and braving the cold?
Regardless, Ohio and Pennsylvania pretty much makes it game over, no?

Did anyone just see Rick Sanchez dismantle Joe the Plumber?
UPDATE (3:59 p.m.): Ask and ye shall receive (thanks to Dan Crooke for pointing it out):
EARLIER: Holy shit, Joe might want to see if his balls are intact. That was brutal. I hope it pops up on YouTube ASAP.

Packing it in
There are three AFI tribute screenings tonight, for Heath Ledger (“Ned Kelly”), Sydney Pollack (“They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”) and Anthony Minghella (“The Talented Mr. Ripley”). I was going to go to at least the Ledger film, maybe the Minghella (haven’t seen either in a while). Then I was going to sit down and transcribe the two hours of wonderful conversation I enjoyed with Dustin Hoffman at his West L.A. office yesterday. Then I was going to hammer out a Tuesday list. But I really just want to embibe and sit in front of the boob-tube, maybe finish watching “Recount” (which I never caught over the summer). It could be a nail-biting day. So I’m going to go easy on myself.
Hey, you do the same.

Not a big gamer or anything, but…
…I just love this commercial for the XBOX 360’s “Gears of War 2.” Strangely moving:
