In Contention

  • Boss, take two

Nothing else from me today.  I’m off to see The Boss one more time at the Sports Arena.  Here’s hoping Tom Morello comes back for another stab at “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” because that was friggin’ awesome.

  • Jury duty

L.A. county owns my hide all day long (and hopefully not longer than that).  I wish THAT was an April Fools joke.

  • Lighting out for the territories

Westward bound later this afternoon, so things’ll be quiet on my end.  I’m off to get lost in the city once more in the meantime.

  • Been waiting on this a long time

Not Oscar or movie related, but if you’d like to see Jon Stewart dismantle Jim Cramer on “The Daily Show,” have a look.  This has been a LONG time coming:

  • Go Cards?

The other season comes to a close today, and I don’t know.  The Steelers are one of my favorite teams but I love the Cardinals’ story this year, so, that’s where I’m rooting.  I was going to put some money down on it but the payoff isn’t enough to reward the risk I was prepared to make.  Ah well, go Cards.  Enjoy the game.  And give praise to The Boss.

  • Tuesday is bigger than movies

White HouseWay off topic for a moment, but I am Canadian, proud of my country, happy to be here, though I confess to having always been fascinated with American history and politics. There are many friends of mine in the United States and I enjoy visiting whenever I can. Cocoa Beach, Florida is a popular destination for my family and Los Angeles is always great fun.

I was four when JFK was killed and vaguely remember my parents being visibly upset at something around that time. As I grew older I was most aware, and deeply saddened when Martin Luther King Jr. was killed and watched the train carry RFK home, tears streaming down my cheeks for reasons I did not understand. Watching Nixon resign was bittersweet because I always believed he had it in him to be a great President (and indeed proved to be a great Statesman), and watched with great interest when George Dubya was “elected” in 2000.

Never in my lifetime did I expect an African-American to be elected President of the United States. There would always be too much racial hatred, too much anger, too much prejudice. What a pleasant shock to find that was not true, that people really wanted a change. To quote “2010”: “Something’s happening…something wonderful.”

We are in the midst of witnessing history this week, seeing something extraordinary. In remarkable recognition of what might have been, Obama’s own children stated it would have been just as exciting to have seen Hilary Clinton win and a woman lead the United States.

I am staying home Tuesday because I want to see history as it happens.  And I welcome Obama’s chance to take America into the next stage of their greatness.

And I have every confidence he will do just that.

  • Attention ROB…going once…

Still need your address for winning in the “Button” contest. Shipment goes out tomorrow. Sorry to bring it to the main page, guys, but the email I don’t have an email response yet.

  • Say it with me

    “Four…more…days.”

  • Back

Now that that’s out of my system, Oscar season continues…

  • Traveling

I’m off to the airport and heading back to the sunny Cali shores.  I’ve had my fill of soul food and open spaces.  All good things must end.  Happy New Year, play nice, I’ll be back on here before you know it.

  • Sorry for the slow loading…

It seems some ad servers were acting up this morning, causing some turmoil for quite a few sites.  Everything should be in order now.

  • Day of rest…a few requests of the football gods

Chad PenningtonObviously, my guys are out of the mix.  Thank you very much Atlanta.  But for those who’ve followed my quasi-coverage of the NFL season, I have a few hopes to toss out there for the final day of the regular season:

    1) Shine down on Rod Marinelli.  It would be two birds with one stone for me if the Lions can come out on top of the Packers today, since I can’t very well stand Aaron Rodgers and I don’t really want to see any team (save maybe the Cowboys) go winless.  Plus, Marinelli could have clocked that ass-hat Detroit Free-Press reporter and no one would have held it against him, but he’s a stand-up guy.  I hope they pull out a miracle.

    2) Breathe some wind into the Eagles’ wings.  The only thing better than rooting for the Skins in my world is rooting against the Cowboys.  Just call it good ole’ fashioned bad blood rivalry.

    3) End the “no one could’ve written it” Dolphins/Jets chapter with a Miami “W.”  I don’t hate the Jets or Brett Favre.  To the contrary.  But the Dolphins have always been my AFC favorite and they have a shot at true redemption this season.  I’d love to see both in the playoffs, but New York had their chances the last couple of weeks.  Chad Pennington deserves this one.

    4) Win one for the Gipper, a.k.a., Jerry Richardson.  It’s hard to grow up in North Carolina and not find yourself on the Panthers’ side, and this year, they’ve played like champions.  The best belated Christmas present for their ailing owner (Richardson was placed on the heart donor list just weeks ago) would be a second seed berth and a rematch with the Giants in the conferance championship.  Let’s start the road there with a victory over the Saints today.

    5) Finally, speaking of the Saints, much as I love Drew Brees, let him fall short of Dan Marino’s godlike single season yardage record.  It’s bad enough that Favre stayed in the league long enough to chip away at all the others, but this one needs to stand.  The poor bastard never got a ring.  Leave him a little piece of history.

    Now, back to Oscar talk…

  • Day of rest

And a little help today, please…

    Washington Redskins

  • Technical difficulties

If you encounter a blank page or a “database error” message, it’s because of the spike in traffic today that comes with the NYFCC announcement.  It happens.  Very sorry for the inconvenience.  FYI, and timely indeed, stay tuned shortly for Guy Lodge’s interview with “Happy-Go-Lucky” actress Sally Hawkins.
