In Contention

  • A shout from the UK

A nice view overrides an overcast (duh) drizzle here in London. I’m glancing out over the Thames as I write this, while a hop across the hallway here provides a look at Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye. Very pleasant.

Meanwhile, down on the continent, the Cannes International Film Festival is catching its stride. The big news so far, as you’ll read below, seems to be that “Blindness” might have come in below expectations. Of course I’ll hold out judgment for myself when I see it, but I hope Fernando Meirelles doesn’t become a flash in the pan. As in love with “City of God” as I was, I was not impressed by “The Constant Gardener.” But his latest has been a must-see for me since the project was announced.

The crew has done a nice job of rounding up info and perspective in this space, but I always take the opportunity this time of year to spotlight Jeff Wells’s coverage of the fest, without a doubt the most eye-catching aspect of Hollywood Elsewhere in a given film year. Hopefully he comes across a change of clothes soon.

As for me, I’m sure I’ll be in and out with thoughts as the fest pushes forward and as the summer movie season continues to be unveiled. (Indy 4 posters are splattered across the double-deckers out here, of course.) Mike Leigh’s latest, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” is playing up the street at the Chelsea. I’m sure I’ll duck in there to give it a look within the week, as I’m pretty excited for the director’s latest. (Guy reviewed the film for us in April.)  Otherwise it’s finding the typical balance of work and play — as always.

  • Someone put Wolf out of my misery…

He’s embarrassing himself, asking the same question over and over again when it’s clear the callers from Indiana just don’t have any insight into the matter.

  • It’s go time…

EDITED (6:09 p.m.): Well…that was fast. The power of negativity lives on as the old school triumphs one more day.

EARLIER: Polls closed in Pennsylvania one second ago. Now we wait. Let’s hope the media doesn’t drop the ball here with exit polls like they did in New Hampshire.

  • On the posterity of history

I forgot to mention below that there were two specific moments in last night’s closing installment of “John Adams” that struck a definite chord with me. Both regarded the perception of history when it is given to interpretation and glorification, as Adams accosted a painter at his artistic license and as Giamatti read his warning in the closing monologue of the mini-series.

I was reminded of a book I’m flipping through lately, one that I recommend whole-hearted: “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong” by James Loewen. Pick it up some time.

  • To the 007s

The new beta site is leaking out here and there, mostly because of blog pings and such. No worry, but to those peeking, the kinks will be worked out around here within the next week or so, and we should be good to go at 100% for the relaunch at that time.

Enjoy the new digs as they come together.

  • Springsteen backs the Bamer

Not that I needed a nudge toward Obama or anything. My days of indecision on which candidate to deem “my own” within the Democratic party are months behind me. But it’s nice on any day to see that The Boss is batting for your team.

It’s kind of like when you know you’ve got that clutch slugger in the clean-up spot. With Pennsylvania on deck, having Jersey’s son step up to the plate couldn’t have come at a better time. Let’s hope he brings the Crazy Janys and Killer Joes of the Keystone State with him.

  • Los Angeles is on fire…

Well, not really. But damn if I didn’t read 99 degrees on my car thermometer this afternoon.

This town. I swear to God. It’s either one extreme or the next — in all scenarios. Never a happy medium.

  • Not that it matters, but…

…a month or two ago, the last thing I was completely sick of the Oscars. Nowadays, the only thing that gives me peace of mind from the rigors of school is coming here to work on the redesign. Weird.

  • Can’t stop watching

Not Oscar related, but what is in March? Win, lose or draw, this will be one of the all time greatest speeches. And I just keep watching it.
