I’ve never been precisely sure what BAFTA Los Angeles is, or what it is that they do — I do know that I’m wary of any group that is chaired by “So You Think You Can Dance” overlord Nigel Lythgoe, but that could be irrational on my part. I do know, however, that have their [...]

OFF THE CARPET: Closing the book on summer 2011
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:38 am · August 22nd, 2011
The summer movie season has come to an end, and what an interesting season it was. We saw three billion-dollar grossers for the first time ever in one year, let alone one three-month spread (thank you, 3D). We saw a bit of a glass ceiling for comic book movies, proving nothing is a sure thing [...]

BOX OFFICE: ‘Apes’ rose
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:46 am · August 7th, 2011
I’m no box office expert, but while $54 million is obviously a great late-summer number for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” I can’t help but wonder if it would have had a shot at more bank if it had been let out of the bag earlier via advance press screenings. Regardless, word of [...]

BOX OFFICE: ‘Cowboys’ and ‘Smurfs’ photo finish
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:38 am · July 31st, 2011
After winning the day Friday, “The Smurfs” (which somehow has an audience) managed to dip down and line up neck and neck with the under-performing “Cowboys & Aliens.” Meanwhile, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is on course to be the fastest worldwide billion-dollar grosser, and is likely to take the domestic crown, [...]

So “Captain America: The First Avenger” managed to hold the Harry Potter buzz wave to one weekend crown by coming out on top this week. Things started with the highest opening day gross of all time ($92 million, blasting away the record previously held by [...]

My only friend, the end
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:41 am · July 12th, 2011
I’ll make this brief. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” hits this weekend. It will be massive. The devoted will turn out and love it. The sense of grand closure will settle for many. But I’ll just have to cop here at the beginning to the fact that I cannot connect the dots [...]

Nothing much going on today, so why not toss up a good ole’ fashioned SEO-baiting post? Those of you planning to take in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ next weekend (which I imagine is most of you), you’ll be delighted to know that, according to Superhero Hype, Warner Bros. will attach the [...]
