The summer movie season has come to an end, and what an interesting season it was. We saw three billion-dollar grossers for the first time ever in one year, let alone one three-month spread (thank you, 3D). We saw a bit of a glass ceiling for comic book movies, proving nothing is a sure thing […]

BOX OFFICE: ‘America,’ f*** yeah
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:22 pm · July 24th, 2011
So “Captain America: The First Avenger” managed to hold the Harry Potter buzz wave to one weekend crown by coming out on top this week. I think it’s a pretty solid number given the givens, but anyway, my eyes are on that #10 spot. Woody Allen’s locomotive keeps chugging along. (Courtesy: Box Office Mojo)

You all know I’m way in the plus column on Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The film hit theaters nationwide yesterday. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so head on back here with them once you get around to it this weekend.

‘Captain America’ keeps the summer sizzling
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:00 am · July 20th, 2011
So, “Captain America: The First Avenger” wraps up the summer’s superhero slate this week. Yes, we have “Cowboys & Aliens” on the way to keep the general comic book flow going, but Marvel’s other bookend to the summer hits Friday, and, well, I thought it was just (yankee doodle) dandy. “Robust” is the word that […]
Listen to Alan Menken’s ‘Star Spangled Man’ from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:07 pm · July 19th, 2011
When Alan Menken was tapped last year to provide an original song for Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” I had no idea how that made any sense. Not that Menken isn’t able to branch out of his typical milieu, but it just didn’t really compute for this material. When I finally saw the […]

‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ trailer
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 5:02 pm · June 23rd, 2011
I’ll be updating Oscar shenanigans with some predictions and charts in a week and a half, and in them, you’ll see that of all the superhero movies this year, I’m counting on “Captain America: The First Avenger” to be the one that registers much at all with the Academy. We’ll see if that pans out, […]

The Super Bowl spots

7. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Outrageous. Make it stop. 6. “Cowboys & Aliens” Though cluttered, expands on what we’ve seen. 5. “Captain America: The First Avenger” Not a bad trailer but something lingering still has me on guard. 4. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” A true teaser, promising escalation but more contained.

COMIC-CON: ‘Captain America’ teases, ‘Thor’ hammers, ‘Avengers’ assemble
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:28 pm · July 24th, 2010
Hall H was humming by the time Marvel Entertainment honcho Kevin Feige took the stage for the highly anticipated “Captain America” and “Thor” panels this afternoon. And for the comic book masses waiting with bated breath for any sliver of info, it was ecstasy. For me…not so much. Director Joe Johnston and stars Chris Evans […]

Comic-Con 2010 on the way
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:30 pm · July 12th, 2010
Well, the inbox is getting stuffed with this and that regarding breakfasts and panels and viral marketing and yada, yada, yada. That can mean only one thing: Comic-Con is around the corner. And as I poured over the recently released schedule over the weekend, I found myself excited for…very little. DreamWorks Animation will make its […]
