I’m no box office expert, but while $54 million is obviously a great late-summer number for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” I can’t help but wonder if it would have had a shot at more bank if it had been let out of the bag earlier via advance press screenings. Regardless, word of mouth could keep its legs strong, and I’m sure Fox is more than happy with this. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” hit a billion worldwide earlier in the week and will be lapped domestically by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” later this week. “Cowboys & Aliens,” meanwhile, is toast.

Happy for ‘Apes’. And $54 mill actually seems really good to me.
‘Smurfs’ is still going strong, ugh.
Glad ‘The Change-Up’ bombed. It looked like garbage. And anyone I know who saw it thought it was cringe-inducingly bad.
Happy that ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ is still doing well; ‘Horrible Bosses’, too.
Meanwhile, ‘Bridesmaids’ is chuggin’ to $170 mill domestic, and ‘Midnight in Paris’ will sail past $50 mill domestic. Wow.
Sarah’s Key is doing quite well.
Too bad that new Final Destination movie will be number 1.
Harry Potter is close to surpassing Transformers!
Cowboys and Aliens had a decent weekend to weekened decline. It’s no huge hit but it may have staying power.
The final “Harry Potter” wasn’t my favourite film of the franchise, but I’m so glad that it rather than “Transformers 3” will have the box office crown for 2011.
Happy that “Crazy Stupid Love” has performed reasonably well.
Ugh at “The Smurfs”; at least its huge budget will absorb most of those profits.
“Captain America” is actually getting better attendance than “Thor”, but fewer people are seeing it in 3D, and thus it’s earned just slightly less. Nonetheless, I’m sure the studio is happy with its performance.

Careful. Twi-shite is just around the corner.
Hehe ^
Ha,ha, awesome Apes have the opening crappy C&A with its big names (with no actual drawing power or, in Ford case, not anymore) was expected to have. Great job! Trully the crowd pleaser of the summer especially THAT scene everyone`s buzzing about.
Maxim- Cowboys & Aliens had a terrible drop. It’s a miss, no two ways about it.
Transformers is much better than HP. There’s actually life in the former.
Harry Potter 7.2 also beat The Return Of The King for the third all-time place at the world-wide box office.
It’s in 3D and the ticket prices are higher blah blah.
Just reporting :p
7-Since when did November qualify as “right around the corner?” And Twilight is better than Transformers any day.
Cowboys and Aliens probably won’t even top True Grit.
And HIV is only slightly better than AIDS.
^haha
I highly doubt Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 will overtake either Potter or Transformers in the box office. If it were the final Twilight, I’d have a wait an see attitude, but since this film like HPDH1 is a Part One, I expect it to do at best only marginally better than Eclipse, which was not quite a $4 million US BO improvement over New Moon, and $42/44 million less than Potter and Transformers have banked so far (and counting) in the US.
Saw Apes again today. Loved it even more. My #3 on the year so far.
m1: Since it was three months away? Not that this semantics disagreement is the least bit necessary. Figure of speech and all that…
And Twilight isn’t better than anything on ANY day.
And another $1,000,000 in the bank for Midnight in Paris, taking it up to $48.5 m. In fact, it was just $100,000 behind Cars 2, which was playing in over twice the number of venues!
Saw “Midnight in Paris” last night, and it’s my early frontrunner for favorite of the year, and I can’t imagine liking anything else more in the Original Screenplat department. Adrien Brody killed it in his one scene, and I don’t want to spoil who he plays, but it’s AWSOME!
19-Having sat through the pieces of garbage known as I Am Number Four, No Strings Attached, and Pirates of the Caribbean, I highly doubt that this Twilight will be worse than these.
The Twilight series – to this point – is better than any of 2011’s I Am Number Four, Red Riding Hood, Big Mommas, Hall Pass, The Roommate, or any possible similar film … by a CLEAR margin.
Of course, Twilight is still not very good. I loathed New Moon. But the series is hardly the worst as far as writing or technical work goes. imo.

So far, you are right. Definitely not the worst thing out there. But boy-oh-boy, just wait for Breaking Dawn. The book was an appalling garbage of the highest order and those movies cannot possibly be saved even with Condon`s best effort. I mean, it has werewolf falling in love with the baby and fanged caesarean for crying out loud. And is beyond boring between the odd WTF moment.
I am fearful of Breaking Dawn now, haha.
Damn. I thought that was next year.
I HATE those Twilight movies. Seriously, worst franchise ever, unless you can’t two Fantastic Four movies as a franchise.
How is Twilight the worst franchise? Ace Ventura and those Chipmunk movies are way worse.
I find nothing redeeming about Twilight whatsoever. Sure, it’s not fair to call it “worst ever” or whatever, but let’s not split hairs. Shitty is shitty and those films have NOTHING TO OFFER.
I get most sensations, even when I’m not a fan myself. But these and the Transformers movies, are sensations I just plain don’t get.
My girlfriend made me watch the first two Twilight films on Friday. They are certainly terrible movies, but I would rather watch them again than The Blind Side, Precious, or Juno. Twilight is trash cinema for a demographic, while the others aspire to be something they are not even close to being.
I forgot the Chipmunks movies. They’re neck and neck.
DylanS, well said about Transformers.
All I get from those films are: twirpy Sam Witwicky, non-descript female stars, huge pieces of metal clashing, noise, and a running time that goes for 2.5 hours.
I zone out early on, my mind wanders, & try as I might … I’ll never be entertained by them. But I do try.
JJ1: Not to mention huge pieces of metal clashing that aren’t actually real.
Man, I just realized that Bridesmaids is the only movie I saw this summer that ever was in the top 10. Before that, it was Scream 4.
I guess I’ll saddle up and see Rise of the Planet of the Apes though to see what the fuss is about.
‘Bridesmaids’ is still my favorite film of the year (no less, comedy).
It’s quite a margin ahead of anything else. And I’ve seen a lot that I liked, and a lot that I didn’t.
34-You didn’t see Midnight in Paris? It was exceptional.
Jokes about AIDS are so funny.
