For those keeping score at home, this is what an inspired and thoughtful set of nominations looks like. Sure, it’s as subjective as anything, so I’ll qualify it with “in my opinion.” And I’m not sure how many voting members there are (smaller groups yield more interesting collectives — usually). But I’m happy to see SOMEONE finding a unique voice in all this precursor fray.

Really cool nominees. Glad someone put Lesley Manville in supporting—I feel like she has the best chance there. It is a little strange that they nominated Aaron Eckhart but not Nicole Kidman, though.
Also happy to see Tilda Swinton get some well-deserved love, too!
More Gosling snubs.. What’s the deal?
Very interesting choices. I liked to see Ondine mentioned. I´m very happy for Blake Lively. She is fantastic in he Town.
It’s too bad they didn’t see True Grit – how else explain its absense in the cinematography category?
Blake Lively, eh? That was probably the most unexpected thing I saw there.
Always glad to see John Hurt nominated for things as well, for another surprise.
I do not understand all this love for The Town. Lively was decent at best.
Yep, yep, yep. This is all it takes, really. Just a few sprinkles of something resembling an original thought. Even though I’m sure when the winners are announced it’ll be much of the same, it’s good to know that at least some different films and people got noticed.
Interesting to see Jeremy Renner and John Hawkes popping up with quite the frequency these past few days. There’s certainly still room in the category for them, although they will both probably need some GG/SAG love to help the cause.. It’ll be very interesting to see how both support categories in particular turn out tomorrow and on Thursday.
San Diego stole my heart by snubbing overrated overactress Benning. Good riddance.
Nice. Definitely a set of nominations I can respect (even though it doesn’t include The Ghost Writer’s score).
Foreign language category is still lame as hell.
And it will continue to boggle my mind why people still think Wally Pfister deserves any accolade.
I dig the inclusion of “Toy Story 3” in ORIGINAL Screenplay. I don’t think sequels of original movies should be considered adaptations.
Glad to see Eckhart nominated, Kidman has racked up some nominations so I don’t mind her missing out. I will love to see her and Aaron matching in nominations, same thing with Gosling and Williams. Both couples gave intertwined performances.
Manville in supporting. She may be screwed a la Cotillard last year. I don’t see a nom happening if there’s category confusion. That’s the 2nd supporting mention I’ve seen of hers. Brits … help her come Oscar voting!
Eckhart’s bursts of rage in Rabbit Hole were more humorous than realistic. Brings back memories of his awful performance in The Dark Knight.
Seems like Portman and Lawrence are the frontrunners in their category.
I like the Inception and Harry Potter inclusions.
San Francisco went with “The Social Network” for the win.
Kris, i think someone’s just excited that shutter island finally got a major award nomination ;)
Love the shout-out for John Hurt as Old Man Peanut, still one of the funniest, prickliest performances of the year. Great set of nominations.
Went to a PGA screening of True Grit tonight with Coens and Hailee there for QA. Two interesting things to note.
1. At the end credits the one name that got a huge applause was Hailee Steinfeld.
2. Ethan Coen said that Roger Deakins is currently shooting something digitally and that it looks “phenomenal” and that Deakins has stated True Grit is probably his last project shot on film.
Anyone know what Deakins is currently shooting? It’s not listed on IMDB.
Matthew, that’s really exciting news. I’m loving all these masters of the craft experimenting with DV and expanding its many still-unexplored visual possibilities. Hot damn, I’m pumped for that.
Toronto Film Critics announced. Your assumptions are correct.
But Armie Hammer’s win in Supporting Actor is a shockingly pleasant surprise, even if it is another mark in the tallybox for the behemoth.
man i can’t believe “no one knows about persian cats” got a nomination.
oh how i wish iran had submitted that one instead of the awful film they actually sent to the academy.
