‘The Tempest’ trailer

Written by

Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest” has been getting knocked around ever since it hit the festival circuit last month. You’ll recall Guy was no fan at Venice (to put it lightly). But now a trailer for the film has hit, and indeed, while it looks like a crafts showcase, it has more than its share of red flags. Check it out for yourself via Apple by clicking the image below or watch the embed after the jump.

Looks like a total mess. Yikes.

It looks like a potential disaster. Beautiful, but too-strange? And yet, I may come away liking it in spite of itself. Amazing cast; though, that did nothing for Nine. The techs look good. I just don’t see a big audience for this.

The trailer basically shows/spoils every interesting visual flourish the film has to offer — I was really hoping they wouldn’t show my favorite, Whishaw as the harpie — while at the same time making it seem like most of the movie is like that (when in fact, I thought there weren’t nearly enough batshit/silly Taymor flourishes).

Well, if the people who went into The American expecting a thriller felt hoodwinked, after taking a trip to see Gandalfina and the Fire Dogs of Hell they might quit moviegoing altogether.

    Looks like Shakespeare going camping

It might become a cult film or something.

    …Or nothing.

Definitely looks all over the place, and the trailer seems to try and sell it like it’s some action movie or something. I can’t imagine that many being enticed by this, even with names like Shakespeare, Taymor, Mirren, etc. attached to it.

Cutting a trailer is really an art. No coincidence that trailers for David Fincher and Coen Brothers movies are always so good.

This one is just awkward, especially when that Sigur Ros track starts playing. Stop misusing good music.

Such a bad movie and Djimon Hounsou’s part is the worst part of it.

It does look pretty darn bad, and yet it looks so campy and awful that I may enjoy it. Doubtful, though.

I do quite like Felicity Jones though.

I’ve never seen a good movie where in Russel Brand was in it…

I guess this won’t be an exception?

As bad a this might be, you’ve gotta admire the full throttle way Taymor has plunged into this…. if you’re gonna fail, maybe it’s good to fail spectacularly.

And the creature with black feathers in 1:40reminds me of Beast Howl in Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving castle…

This looks awful. And I tend to give Taymor the benefit of the doubt because she’s usually so visually fantastic. This is just messy and does Helen Mirren just point a stick at things for the entire running time? Yikes.

    Looks…awful.

    Anywho..

@matsunaga- Russell Brand was in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, and I thought that was a good film. Very funny, including Brand.

I feel like they’re killing a Shakespeare’s masterpiece. Helen Mirren looks good, anyway, and so do the costumes. Uh, and the music, the music in the trailer is nice.

    The rest… no comment.

Christopher Plummer was in a terrific adaptation of The Tempest this year at Stratford, and I hear the production (filmed live) will be shown across North America this fall…keep an eye open for it

The trailer looked good. I didn’t think it was a mess. Overwhelming, maybe, but not a mess. I am glad to see Taymor staying true to herself.
