Annually I put together a hasty list of my most anticipated films of the New Year on January 1. I got rid of the pomp and circumstance around the perennial post a while back and just stuck with the list. But a couple of things…
I’m not sure if Kevin Macdonald’s “The Eagle of the Ninth” will make it to theaters in 2010, but that would definitely be a consideration. And it’s difficult not to be interested in product from major filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Peter Weir and James L. Brooks, but, alas, they didn’t speak up for me when putting this together.
Typically, the blockbusters will show up in numbers on something like this, because for me, that’s what I tend to anticipate. When art seems to be skillfully married to commerce (like my #1 selection — which is most people’s #1 selection), all the better. But it’s tough to really know what the art house product could have in store until we’re in the thick of the year.
Anyway, these are the 10 that have my interest piqued from here (more on this in the podcast later today):
1. “Inception” (Christopher Nolan)
2. “Black Swan” (Darren Aronofsky)
3. “Toy Story 3” (Lee Unkrich)
4. “Iron Man 2” (Jon Favreau)
5. “Alice in Wonderland” (Tim Burton)
6. “Robin Hood” (Ridley Scott)
7. “The Tree of Life” (Terrence Malick)
8. “Your Highness” (David Gordon Green)
9. “Kick-Ass” (Matthew Vaughn)
10. “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” (Oliver Stone)

Do you think there’s any chance of Blood Meridian getting made this year? If so, that.
What about ‘Green Zone’? Wasn’t that on your most anticipated list last year?
I’m with you on most of the above (with the exception of 5, since Burton doesn’t make movies anymore, he makes masturbation aids), but I’m also seriously looking forward to “The Fighter” and “The Killer Inside Me”.
Most of those would probably make my list, as well as Green Zone (Paul Greengrass), Somewhere (Sofia Coppola), Greenberg (Noah Baumbach), The Illusionist (Sylvain Chomet) and Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese).
Oddest film of the year looks to be David Fincher’s The Social Network. He’s been one of my favorite directors ever since Se7en, but not even Fincher directing can get me excited in a movie about Facebook. It might not be quite as bizarre as when Ang Lee announced he was directing Hulk, but it’s close. Nevertheless, it’ll be very interesting to see how it pans out, even if I don’t have much interest in actually seeing it.
I’m right there with you for my #’s 1 and 2
1. Inception (Nolan)
2. Black Swan (Aronofsky)
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Wright)

6. Iron Man 2 (Favreau)
7. Kick-Ass (Vaughn)
8. The Fighter (Russell)
9. Shutter Island (Scorsese)
10. Biutiful (Inarritu)
Tim Burton’s lost his touch in my opinion, as soon as material from “Alice in Wonderland” started being shown I was no longer anticipating that film. But I am dying to see “Inception”, “Tree of Life” and “Black Swan” as well as the two mentioned by Marlowe. Isn’t “Inside Man 2” supposed to be coming out this year? I’m interested to see how that will play out.
Kris atr Mother & Child and Agora 2010 releases?
Great list, Kris. I’m wondering if you think Inception has a shot at any of the top categories for next year’s Oscars. I know it’s kind of early, and you don’t really do predictions for the next year until this year’s Oscar ceremony is over, but what do you think? ;)
Inception is my number 1, too.
I wouldn’t say “The A-Team” is exactly a movie I’m anticipating, but I’m insanely curious about Liam Neeson playing Hannibal and about Sharlto Copley playing Murdock.
I expect Disney/Pixar to bring us the best eye-candy this year: “TRON Legacy,” “Toy Story 3” and, sure, what the heck, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

I can’t wait to avoid the new Nolan and Aronofsky films.

oh and I’m SO GLAD to hear I’m not the only one who’s not remotely excited for Alice In Wonderland.

4. Alice in Wonderland
5. Iron Man 2.
6. Robin Hood
7. Toy Story 3
8. Tree of Life
9. Green Zone
10. Clash of the Titans
I’m a huge Tim Burton fan but the trailer for Alice in Wonderland makes it seem like it’s all shot against green screen which I found a bit off-putting. One of the greatest things about Burton films were always the beautiful art design and sets, and while it certainly looks interesting at the same time it looks a bit too CGI too.
Good list, we have several in common. Inception is also my #1. Here’s the rest of my list…http://bit.ly/8XfIRc
Let’s see if I can put something together here:
1. The Tree of Life
2. Wild Grass
3. A Prophet
4. Black Swan
5. Air Doll
6. The Dreaming Machine
7. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
8. Inception
9. The Grandmaster
10. The Assassin
The last two are only in the bottom positions because I don’t exactly have a lot of faith they’ll make it out this year. But I’ve got my fingers crossed.
Ahhh! Thanks Julie, I knew there was something I was forgetting! “Never Let Me Go” is a film I’m also anticipating. As a matter of fact, Kiera Knightley has a lot of films slated for 2010, I’m excited for two other films of hers coming out: “London Boulevard” & “Last Night”.
Inception looks great. Green Zone does too. I think Wolfman could be good too.
Inception, Shutter Island, Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, The A-Team, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, and Robin Hood. Probably the award for Most Psyched is tied between Inception and Toy Story 3.
Martin Scorsese’s film “Silence” would be my number one most anticipated, but I guess it’s been pushed back to 2011. Herzog’s “The Piano Tuner” also doesn’t have a release date yet.
So I guess Polanski’s The Ghost Writer is my anticipated right now, with Inception a very close second. I’m also excited to see Shutter Island, The Black Swan, The Tree of Life, and Alice in Wonderland.
i forgot about Greenberg!
The Way Back. Inception. The Fighter. Tree of Life.
Shutter Island.
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 1 (David Yates)
2. Inception (Christopher Nolan)
3. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese)
4. Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)

7. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (Woody Allen)
8. Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky)
9. Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (Oliver Stone)
10. The Way Back (Peter Weir)
Niki Caro’s The Vintner’s Luck, with Jérémie Renier, Gaspard Ulliel, Vera Farmiga and Keisha Castle-Hughes. When is the damned thing getting a US release?
There are probably TWO David O’Russell movies coming out this year, if the early reports are to be believed on Nailed getting some money come to fruition.
Wall Street 2 has the potential to be a classic or an all out disaster. Can’t wait.
Alice in Wonderland
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Rapunzel
Robinhood
Inception
Harry Potter
Never Let Me Go
The Way Back
Toy Story 3
Nightmare on Elm street (?)
I Love You Philip Morris

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 1 (David Yates)

7. Alice in Wonderland (Tim Burton)
8. Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)
9. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese)
10. Clash of the Titans (Louis Leterrier)
The one with Nicole Kidman playing a man. It also has Gwyneth Paltrow I think. Oh and of course Harry Potter and Toy Story.
“The Ice at the Bottom of the World” with Meryl Streep and Charlize Theron and “Mother and Child”.
Inception, Valentine’s Day, Shutter Island, and Percy Jackson are the interesting early birds for me.

True Grit (I don’t know if it will release in 2010)

Al, did you see the trailer for “Cop Out” (A Couple of Dicks)? I bet it’s off your list once you do.
Saw the 3D trailer for ALICE in front of AVATAR as was fairly sickened and depressed. Wasn’t Hey let’s throw shit right at the camera tired 40 years ago?
