‘Air,’ ‘Basterds,’ ‘Precious’ lead the way with SAG

Diane Kruger in Inglourious BasterdsThere wasn’t much in the way of a surprise with this year’s Screen Actors Guild announcement.  The nods that are least likely to translate to Oscar, if I were a betting man, are Diane Kruger’s supporting actress bid for “Inglourious Basterds” and (I guess I just have a feeling) Matt Damon, supporting for “Invictus.” The rest seem like safe bets on down the line.

I wouldn’t read too much into the ensemble snub of “Up in the Air,” though it’s curious to nominate three actors from the film and then ignore it in that field.  The ensemble category is also where “Nine” got its expected attention, though Penelope Cruz also showed up in supporting for the film.  The BFCA, you’ll recall, went for Marion Cotillard instead.

“Precious,” “Inglourious Basterds” and “Up in the Air” had the most nominations, with three apiece.  I would have expected “An Education” to have that designation, too, but somehow Alfred Molina was ignored.  Maybe that won’t be the case with Oscar, maybe it will.

On to the next thing.  Check the full list of nominees after the jump.

    Diane Kruger! WTF
No Up in the Air for Best Ensemble.
    No Julianne Moore!

The only WTF!!! nomination is Diane Kruger. Laurent was far better than her !!! And what about Morton and Moore ???

An Education for ensemble was very nice as well as Nine’s nomination. All the rest are really deserved.

I can’t believe I predicted Laurent and not Kruger! So angry …

That Diane Kruger nom is off-the-charts crazy. But at least it’s fun.

This is why Laurent shouldn’t have been campaigned in lead. Silly move.

Nine for Best Ensemble just shows how campaigning influences those awards. I don’t think they deserve it.

Diane Kruger was a shocking one.

Laurent couldn’t get into supporting here, SAG lets actors choose their category and sticks to it.

Apart from the batfink crazy nomination of Kruger who people should substitute Julianne Moore with!

Those could be the Oscar nominations.

I think Molina for an Education will be snubbed, which is a shame since he was the highlight for me in that movie.

seems to me that the best actor and actress categories a done deal.

GREAT to see Kruger in there just wish she bumped Cruz instead of Moore.

Im not understanding the lack of love for Molina i hope people shape up by oscar nominations

Diane Kruger getting nominated must be a joke, she was the major weakpoint in an otherwise pretty good cast.

Wow no Up in the Air but three actor nominations. Plus yes weird for Kruger getting in.

Bing147: Exactly. If she’d been campaigned supporting, I’m certainly she’d have been nominated ahead of Kruger. (Clearly, they love the film.)

I think leaving “Up in the Air” out of the ensemble category makes sense — there are some strong individual performances there, but I wouldn’t call it an ensemble piece.

“An Education,” on the other hand, has a great integrated ensemble — that’s a smart call that I wasn’t expecting. (And hey, it’s something for Rosamund Pike, at least.)

oh and when you said that both Precious and Inglourious Basterds got three nominations, so did Up in the Air.

I agree with nel, Alfred Molina was the highlight of An Education. Mulligan wasn’t that good IMHO.

No Julianne Moore is a shocking one.

I have to admit that Diane Kruger was apleasant shock for me. I actually think she was pretty good. I would rather see Pike being the surprise but anyway.

Why oh why did they put Cotillard lead? Not Cruz again! Is she the new default nominee?

Why is the headline “‘Basterds,’ ‘Nine’ lead the way with SAG” if Nine got 2 nominations and Precious got 3?

Also, I can’t believe the ACTORS branch, of all people, nominated Matt Damon in “Invictus.”

And, agreed with Lev, nominating Kruger over Laurent makes no sense. Well, the Weinsteins’ bone-headed decision to campaign supporting actresses Cotillard and Laurent in lead seems to be blowing up in their faces, eh?

  20. M.Harris Avatar

Outside of a couple of possible, “minor surprises” I think that these Sag nominations will be pretty indicative of what the Academy will nominate.

Out of the Globes, and the various other critic awards – the most on the mar, is usually the Sag Awards.

I agree that Best Actor & Actress are probably locked in. We can be sure of a nomination for Renner now. Atleast thats a plus.

I still think McKay will make it to the 5. And Best Actress seems a bit weird apart from Monique and the two ladies from Up In The Air.

But that nomination for Matt Damon is strange. Even he must feel that I do good work for 10 years but no nomination. I suddenly do a hum-drum role in a prestige pic directed by Eastwood and bang! I get a nomination.

While I agree that Laurent’s was the better turn in Basterds, I’m just delighted about any love the film gets, and there is clearly a lot of love in the actors’ branch. Plus, if Kruger managed to sneak in as the surprise nominee this year (because we need at least one, or I’m gonna just hibernate after February 2nd), I’m pretty sure that would be just the push Inglourious Basterds needs to be the nomination leader. With every passing precursor, it’s looking like the real Best Picture race might be a four-way fight between Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, and Up in the Air.

  25. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Flubbed on the headline. I’m still asleep here.

  29. leonardo Avatar

I also think that the oscars nominations will be like the nominations from today, with the exception of Diane Kruger, because Julianne Moore gonna be nominated instead of her for A Single Man.
I’m a little upset with the Up in the Air ommission. Please, can somebody tell me if a movie that wasn’t nominated for best ensemble in SAG won the oscar for best picture?

I’m actually pretty happy for Diane Kruger… even though I didn’t love the film and was never impressed by her previous work.

I felt she and Waltz were the only ones who really got the tone Quentin Tarantino was going for – Pitt went too far towards comedy, Laurent was too serious (I didn’t really like her performance or her bits of the film, actually).

I feel bad for Melanie Laurent. She would’ve been a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination with all the love the film is getting had she only been rightfully campaigned as supporting. Not that Diane Kruger was awful, but Laurent was undoubtedly better.

Up in the Air’s snub for ensemble is a rather odd one, but then again all the main performances were nominated so there’s hardly cause for alarm.

Good for An Education though, which feels like it’s been fading fast lately outside of Mulligan. Good for Molina and especially for Sarsgaard, who is perpetually underrated and overlooked. It seems like it’ll be an uphill battle for either of them to get Oscar-nominated at this point, though.

@Leonardo: You have to go all the way back to “Braveheart” in 1995. That’s the only time it’s happened.

That said, it is fun to see a total curve-ball like Kruger happen. It definitely spices things up, and considering she seems like an unlikely Oscar nominee, there’s a little freedom for speculation on what five will make it at the Oscars.. It’s certainly not quite as locked and loaded as Best Actor/Actress are (I went 5/5 on both categories predicting, as I imagine pretty much everyone else did).

Up in the Air getting snubbed in Ensemble is so telling. Congratulations, Inglourious Basterds, Precious and The Hurt Locker. You now have a much, much better chance of winning Best Picture, unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t want to “read too much into” a snub which has been the kiss of death since 1996.

  37. aspect ratio Avatar
    aspect ratio

I don’t think this snub hurts Up in the Air’s chances that for Best Picture by that much, regardless of what SAG history would have us believe. If one of the three performances had been snubbed as well there would’ve been reason for panic perhaps, but it did after all get the most individual acting nominations of all the films. An ensemble nomination would’ve just been icing on the cake.

  38. Jeremy Avatar
    Jeremy

Indeed, the UITA SAG snub tells us now that if the movie somehow does end up winning Best Picture, it’s only going to be because it coasted in on a bunch of #3 votes when a consensus failed to emerge elsewhere. This is a major, major setback for the film, and a sign that it’s not loved by voters as much as by Oscar bloggers.

I thought Diane was better than Melanie, she really shined in that bar scene. She acts well in German.

Jeremy: What an absolutely ignorant thing to say. Yeah, the film with the most acting nods of the bunch isn’t as well liked as we thought. Give me a break with the knee-jerk, dubious analysis, folks.

I don’t think Up in the Air is going to win Best Picture. This race is between The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and Precious.

  44. Jeremy Avatar

Agreed Andrew, anyone who doesn’t see this as a sign of weakness for UITA is living in denial. I think Avatar has a chance at BP though. In this case the SAG snub seems a non-issue, as it is hardly actor-driven.

  45. The Other James D. Avatar

I forgot which article I said this on, but I knew Alfred Molina was the weakest link. I think he was good, but vicariously thinking like an Academy voter, I just don’t feel that his performance sticks with you, sadly. I think it’s easily outshone (with the exception of Damon…I mean, wtf, really). If he sneaks back onto the Oscar ballot with this month-and-a-half gap, superb! If not, I hope Anthony Mackie could ride the THL wave of love and boot Damon’s autopilot nod.

Kruger was better than she’s given credit for, and people seem to forget Laurent could NOT be nominated in supporting here (NOR could Cotillard), because SAG follows the campaigns’ requests, and they were suggested as lead. So, in supporting actress, I think Moore is like Marisa Tomei last year–misses here, returns at Oscar? Either Cotillard/Moore will take Kruger’s spot, or both will take hers *and* Cruz’s. Can’t wait!

I’m thrilled most for Renner and Farmiga. The former deserves the recognition, and yay for the underdog; the latter is outstanding and it’s great to see her not being forgotten. Hopefully, this continues for both of them through BAFTA (if both eligible, I dunno their release dates over there) and Oscar.

  46. Adam Avatar

Jeremy: Denial is often the weapon of choice of those who mistake Oscar forecasting as a way to slap their dubious favorite films of the year on the back. Up in the Air isn’t as dead as perhaps The Lovely Bones, but it’s now in critical condition.

  47. McGuff Avatar
    McGuff

Andrew and Adam: Did you really expect Star Trek to land an ensemble nod? That’s hardly the type of work that the SAG goes for, and it also barely features veteran actors. This is not a branch that’s typically going to reward a science fiction, young, energetic film. Also, if it gets in the best picture 10, it’s certainly going to be in the 6-10 range.

  48. Antinook Avatar
    Antinook

IMHO the Ensemble is more talking about many good performances, Up In the Air has just three memorable ones, right? The other movies have a really crowded group of good performances.
