If you feel like hanging out here and pondering, kvetching, bitching or (here’s a novel idea) enthusing over the results, we’d love your company. For those wanting to watch the show live, catch the stream here.
OK, that’s a wrap, guys. Sorry for the delay in posting those last results, but your generous and frenzied readership meant the server was a little tricky to handle this past half-hour. I’ll offer more ordered thought and commentary tomorrow, but for now, let me say I’m pretty thrilled with how the evening panned out overall. Right now, however, it’s 4:30am where I am, and my bed looks like a pretty inviting place to be. See you in the morning.
Best Picture – Drama: “Slumdog Millionaire”
It is written.
Best Actor in a Drama: Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”
Yes, yes, yes and yes again. I knew if Rourke could score anywhere it would be here, but still, I didn’t trust the Foreign Press to be that cool. Congratulations, HFPA members, for getting it right where most of the major critics’ groups got it wrong. Are you paying attention, SAG?
Best Drama Series: “Mad Men”
Well, duh. Nice to see Matt Weiner get his Globe moment after last year’s win went unseen, though.
Best Actress in a Drama: Kate Winslet, “Revolutionary Road”
Wow. I mean, just… wow. Who saw that coming? Unprecedented, I should think. (EDIT: Not quite. Sigourney Weaver accomplished the same feat in 1988. My bad.) In any case, a fair reward for a fine performance — so was that undeserved supporting award really necessary, HFPA?
(More winners after the jump.)
Best Picture – Musical/Comedy: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Who cares what happens in the Drama categories? This is the best slate of Musical/Comedy winners I can remember since, well, I don’t know when.
Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy: Colin Farrell, “In Bruges”
Ha, so my last-minute hunch came through. Allow me to feel all smug and satisfied — not just because of that, but because Farrell was easily the most deserving of the bunch. I’m ecstatic. Speech of the night so far too… is is too late to give him an Oscar nod? (Yes, but still…)
Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”
And the Oscar goes to… start engraving it now, folks. And you won’t hear any complaint from me — a brilliant filmmaker, unrewarded for too long, and one of the single nicest people I’ve ever met. Maybe it’s not his best film, but what’s new?
By the way, I realize I’ve been a little snide about four-time winner “John Adams” tonight, so in the interests of balance, let me point you to Kris’ rather more measured, intelligent assessment here.
Okay, so Steven Spielberg is a genius of sorts and I bow to no one in my admiration for Martin Scorsese. But will anyone think me disrespectful if I use the Cecil B. DeMille award as an opportunity to run to the kitchen and make myself another hot-chocolate-cognac toddy? (Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.)
Best Actress in a Comedy Series: Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
Can we just pretend it’s for “Saturday Night Live” instead?
Best Original Score: A.R. Rahman, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Richly deserved. (Side note: could there be a weirder combination of presenters than P Diddy and Kate Beckinsale?)
Best Comedy Series: “30 Rock”
I’ve tried to like “30 Rock.” Hell, I’ve tried just to get “30 Rock.” I don’t. It’s my failing. Let’s move on. (I love you, “Weeds.”)
Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie: Paul Giamatti, “John Adams”
I won’t lie to you, I had that one typed out before the envelope was opened. Are we done with “John Adams” now? Can we file it away in the archives of Worthy Achievements Stuffed With Great Actors That No One Will Ever Watch Again?
Best Actor in Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
OK, I know “30 Rock” hasn’t been winning awards for the last ten years running. It just feels that way.
Best Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, “Slumdog Millionaire”
The film remains a triumph of directing over writing for me, but with that beige slate of nominees, I’m hardly complaining.
Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries: Laura Linney, “John Adams”
Well, I do love Laura Linney, at least.
Best Foreign Language Film: “Waltz With Bashir”
I want so badly to love this film. Why don’t I? Answers on a postcard, please.
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”
Well, of course. Even the Globes couldn’t screw that one up.
Best TV Movie or Miniseries: “John Adams”
Idle question… has anyone ever watched “John Adams” more than once?
Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy: Sally Hawkins, “Happy-Go-Lucky”
Sorry for the delay, but I had to savour that moment. For the first time in a very long while in my history of awards-watching I feel genuinely proud of a winner. Nicely done, Ms. Hawkins — and stunning glam-up job too.
Best Animated Feature: “WALL-E”
The biggest upset since … oh, I don’t know … gravity?
Best Actress in a Drama Series (TV): Anna Paquin, “True Blood”
Seriously? Well, I guess January Jones is insanely beautiful, madly talented and in the best show on TV, so she doesn’t need any extra hardware to prove it. And I’ve always liked Anna Paquin but … seriously?
Best Actor in a Drama Series (TV): Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”
OK, so Jon Hamm won last year. But still.
Best Supporting Actress (TV): Laura Dern, “Recount”
My God, Dern was stunning in this. If it had been a theatrical release, she’d be racking up awards, mark my words.
Best Supporting Actor (TV): Tom Wilkinson, “John Adams”
Maybe it’s a British thing, but I was left thoroughly unmoved by “John Adams.” But hell, I’m happy to see Tom Wilkinson win anything.
Best Original Song: “The Wrestler” from “The Wrestler”
Inevitable, uncontestable, inarguable.
Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet, “The Reader”
Sigh… why couldn’t the “OMG Kate Winslet has to win something” mentality have been this strong four years ago? You know, when she actually deserved it?

I think they nominate a ….ford miniseries every year, last year it was Longford.
I think it has something to do with Ford’s Sponsorship.
Haven’t seen Cranford.
Tropic Thunder was AWESOME!!!
FUCKING CALLED THAT…
Ledger was a lock. 2-3 tonight. Oh fuck that “In case” bull shit. He pretty much won the award the day he died. Not like he didn’t deserve it, but he definitely was gonna win.
I think it says something about this year’s crop of films that we’ve spent the last hour arguing about Michael Clayton.
An upset in Best Animated?? Huh. Oh you liked Bolt, right?
I stopped caring about TV awards – Emmys or Golden Globes – a long time ago. Any universe in which “Friday Night Lights” or “The Wire” doesn’t exist is a universe not worth acknowledging. At least the Oscars get it right about 30-40 percent of the time.
In general, I don’t even bother with the Golden Globes, awards given out by shameless starfuckers. Didn’t they nominate “Patch Adams” for Best Picture? Dear Lord.
True, let’s agree to disagree.
Yeah, he thought Bolt was awesome. I think it wasn’t as good as he thought. I would give it a 6/10. Third best animated:
Kung Fu Panda: 8/10
WALL-E: 9/10
::note to self:: Order cake shaped like Frank Langalla for Oscar party so that I can serve “Frosted Nixon”
Guys,
1) Kris liked “Bolt,” not Guy.
2) The “upset” remark was clearly a joke.
Great for Heath. Touching speech by Nolan. Fantastic choice of scene.
True… the HFP does come off as starfuckers most of the time, this year wasn’t so bad.
I hate movies about Nixon.
Italy gets this.
Why is Colin Farrel such a raging douche?
Patrick: That was classic.
How weird would it be if Waltz With Bashir could lose Documentary and Animated and win Foreign? Not likely, I imagine that The Class will win the Oscar. They like their french children.
Pat: HAHA “Frosted Nixon” BRILLIANT!!!
John: Oh, thanks for that. I kinda got hooked on this site from Tapley being on The Movie Blog.
Lost that one (foreign.)
2-4
I’m happy to see Laura Linney win. She’s pretty much brilliant in everything. She was great in The Savages.
Linney was awesome in John Adams. She is a great actress.
No problem, E-Rock. I thought my post came off as harsh – glad to see it wasn’t interpreted that way. :)
I think that you might love “Waltz with Bashir” if it was faster, Guy. Because that’s the only problem I have with it – at times it’s moving to slowly and for people who don’t know Israel’s history this must be annoying. Still it’s my favourite film this year, besides “Gomorra” and “Il Divo”.
Nah, wasn’t harsh.
I haven’t seen Waltz with Bashir. Is it any good?
Seth Rogen – LOL.
Slumdog wins.
FUCK YES.
I am 3-4.
Coming back!!!
Two more Slumdog wins tonight. Director and Picture.
Too much FEY PRAISE!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
In all seriousness, Fey can not get enough praise.
Another sweep on the imminent?
Someone try to make sense out of that.
Commercials can suck my ASS
@John K. I was hoping it was a joke, but then again, i was hoping the endorsement of Bolt was a joke too so you never know.
Regarding John Adams, I don’t feel that it’s overrated even if Generation Kill, which received zero nominations, is better. However, Wilkinson’performance is massively overrated. He really hammed it up.
Isn’t it kinda a downfall of this chat that we have to wait until we either post a comment, refresh, or get an e-mail?
I thought Adams was pretty good.
Anybody else think that The Reader, and Frost/Nixon are overrated?
Alright, I want Oscar Picks, give me either the the Best Picture or Best Picture nominees:
Here are mine:
Changeling
The Dark Knight
The Wrestler
WALL-E
Slumdog Millionaire
Changeling was the best movie this year.
Best moment so far (besides Gervais) was Pitt whispering to whoever was sitting next to him “For what?” when Simon Beaufoy was called to the stand as the victor in the penning category.
Changeling was the best movie of the year? LOL, how do you figure? What about it made it the best movie of the year?
Zan:
I agree, that was a great moment. But my favorite was the entire time Ricky Gervais was on stage.
I think it was so good because of the believability of Angelina Jolie in it. I think Clint Eastwood is improving with age. In the last few years he has made some incredible movies. Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwa Jima, Changeling, and Gran Torino.
New favorite moment.
“Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press, cause a black man can’t get love at the Emmys”
GREAT
GOT IT!!!
4-4
Broke even.
Ledger definitely deserved the win. He’ll surely win the Oscar, as well.
Most likely, yes.
Will The Office EVER get any awards love?
So Changeling was the best film of the year because Angelina Jolie was believable in it? There were a LOT of actors this year that sold their roles just as well, if not better, as Jolie.
HAHA.
HFP Action Figures
Thought I was alone in not really digging 30 Rock Guy.
Changeling was mediocre and Jolie was a weepy mess in it.
Zan, sure, Many other actors were believable in their role, but I think that that was the life and blood of that film. There were plenty of other great things that stick out about Changeling, but that was the centerpiece, so to answer your question, no, that was not the only reason that Changeling was the best of the year. I know it won’t be nominated, but it is my favorite.
Oh, Spielberg, this should be good. Is his wife, Kate Capshaw there?
Changeling was mediocre to you, and that may be true, I will admit, what I said was wrong. It might not be the best, but it is 100% my favorite.
Ah, I see. Just trying to understand the distinction there between best and/or favorites. :)
“Should have mailed it to the Marx Brothers”
That Spielberg montage was great.
