Golden Globe winners, as they are announced

If you feel like hanging out here and pondering, kvetching, bitching or (here’s a novel idea) enthusing over the results, we’d love your company.  For those wanting to watch the show live, catch the stream here.

OK, that’s a wrap, guys. Sorry for the delay in posting those last results, but your generous and frenzied readership meant the server was a little tricky to handle this past half-hour. I’ll offer more ordered thought and commentary tomorrow, but for now, let me say I’m pretty thrilled with how the evening panned out overall. Right now, however, it’s 4:30am where I am, and my bed looks like a pretty inviting place to be. See you in the morning.

Best Picture – Drama: “Slumdog Millionaire”

It is written.

Best Actor in a Drama: Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”

Yes, yes, yes and yes again. I knew if Rourke could score anywhere it would be here, but still, I didn’t trust the Foreign Press to be that cool. Congratulations, HFPA members, for getting it right where most of the major critics’ groups got it wrong. Are you paying attention, SAG?

Best Drama Series: “Mad Men”

Well, duh. Nice to see Matt Weiner get his Globe moment after last year’s win went unseen, though.

Best Actress in a Drama: Kate Winslet, “Revolutionary Road”

Wow. I mean, just… wow. Who saw that coming? Unprecedented, I should think. (EDIT: Not quite. Sigourney Weaver accomplished the same feat in 1988. My bad.) In any case, a fair reward for a fine performance — so was that undeserved supporting award really necessary, HFPA?

(More winners after the jump.)

Best Picture – Musical/Comedy: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”

Who cares what happens in the Drama categories? This is the best slate of Musical/Comedy winners I can remember since, well, I don’t know when.

Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy: Colin Farrell, “In Bruges”

Ha, so my last-minute hunch came through. Allow me to feel all smug and satisfied — not just because of that, but because Farrell was easily the most deserving of the bunch. I’m ecstatic. Speech of the night so far too… is is too late to give him an Oscar nod? (Yes, but still…)

Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”

And the Oscar goes to… start engraving it now, folks. And you won’t hear any complaint from me — a brilliant filmmaker, unrewarded for too long, and one of the single nicest people I’ve ever met. Maybe it’s not his best film, but what’s new?

By the way, I realize I’ve been a little snide about four-time winner “John Adams” tonight, so in the interests of balance, let me point you to Kris’ rather more measured, intelligent assessment here.

Okay, so Steven Spielberg is a genius of sorts and I bow to no one in my admiration for Martin Scorsese. But will anyone think me disrespectful if I use the Cecil B. DeMille award as an opportunity to run to the kitchen and make myself another hot-chocolate-cognac toddy? (Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.)

Best Actress in a Comedy Series: Tina Fey, “30 Rock”

Can we just pretend it’s for “Saturday Night Live” instead?

Best Original Score: A.R. Rahman, “Slumdog Millionaire”

Richly deserved. (Side note: could there be a weirder combination of presenters than P Diddy and Kate Beckinsale?)

Best Comedy Series: “30 Rock”

I’ve tried to like “30 Rock.” Hell, I’ve tried just to get “30 Rock.” I don’t. It’s my failing. Let’s move on. (I love you, “Weeds.”)

Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie: Paul Giamatti, “John Adams”

I won’t lie to you, I had that one typed out before the envelope was opened. Are we done with “John Adams” now? Can we file it away in the archives of Worthy Achievements Stuffed With Great Actors That No One Will Ever Watch Again?

Best Actor in Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”

OK, I know “30 Rock” hasn’t been winning awards for the last ten years running. It just feels that way.

Best Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, “Slumdog Millionaire”

The film remains a triumph of directing over writing for me, but with that beige slate of nominees, I’m hardly complaining.

Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries: Laura Linney, “John Adams”

Well, I do love Laura Linney, at least.

Best Foreign Language Film: “Waltz With Bashir”

I want so badly to love this film. Why don’t I? Answers on a postcard, please.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”

Well, of course. Even the Globes couldn’t screw that one up.

Best TV Movie or Miniseries: “John Adams”

Idle question… has anyone ever watched “John Adams” more than once?

Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy: Sally Hawkins, “Happy-Go-Lucky”

Sorry for the delay, but I had to savour that moment. For the first time in a very long while in my history of awards-watching I feel genuinely proud of a winner. Nicely done, Ms. Hawkins — and stunning glam-up job too.

Best Animated Feature: “WALL-E”

The biggest upset since … oh, I don’t know … gravity?

Best Actress in a Drama Series (TV): Anna Paquin, “True Blood”

Seriously? Well, I guess January Jones is insanely beautiful, madly talented and in the best show on TV, so she doesn’t need any extra hardware to prove it. And I’ve always liked Anna Paquin but … seriously?

Best Actor in a Drama Series (TV): Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”

OK, so Jon Hamm won last year. But still.

Best Supporting Actress (TV): Laura Dern, “Recount”

My God, Dern was stunning in this. If it had been a theatrical release, she’d be racking up awards, mark my words.

Best Supporting Actor (TV): Tom Wilkinson, “John Adams”

Maybe it’s a British thing, but I was left thoroughly unmoved by “John Adams.” But hell, I’m happy to see Tom Wilkinson win anything.

Best Original Song: “The Wrestler” from “The Wrestler”

Inevitable, uncontestable, inarguable.

Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet, “The Reader”

Sigh… why couldn’t the “OMG Kate Winslet has to win something” mentality have been this strong four years ago? You know, when she actually deserved it?

E-Rock, I will say that I enjoyed Gran Torino much more than I did the Changeling….although the audience’s enthusiastic laughter during the Frank character’s racist remarks was a little troubling…

a lot of the Spielbergites in the audience were trying to figure out where the train wreck story was going…..

I loved Minority Report, but without a doubt, Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite Spielberg film. That is one of my greatest memories, the first time I saw Raiders.

    Mike:
Yeah, I really liked Gran Torino, one of my top 10 favorites of the year. And yeah, I was digging the train story.

By the way, we call the HFP starfuckers, but also, I think the stars fuck the HFP a bit too much.

I don’t think a lot of people are missing a 1941 clip. LOL. I think it was one of his worst, but even that was ok.

Raiders came out the summer between my jr/sr year of HS, and my friends and I saw it about 11 times I think. It certainly holds a special place in my filmgoing memory bank.

That being said, Crystal Skull was execrable. Why? Just….why??

  10. Joel Avatar

E-Rock: Close for me. I have about four of his films in my personal top 25. Report (for me, the most satisfying of his films), Raiders, Saving Private Ryan, A.I.

HA I actually laughed a lot when I saw 1941….I liked it more than Empire of the Sun and A.I. And the awful Crystal Skull.

To tell the truth… I didn’t mind Crystal Skull all that much. I have it on DVD, just cause I wanted to have it as a part of the collection.

    YES!
    Boyle won!
    5-4 tonight.

How is Mumbai doing now anyway? I remember around Thanksgiving there were the attacks.

Soo..both Mickey Rourke and RDJ were wearing their sunglasses inside.

And that is why I love them.

    “…and who’s the other…Angelina! Oh Angelina”
    laughed so hard.
Winslet totally deserved the double win, it won’t happen at the oscars (or will it?)
Another Button sweep… not to annoyed by that.
Anyone else notice the uncensored birdflipping from Aronofsky? LOLz

  35. Glenn Avatar

E-Rock, I believe Axl gave one of his Guns n Roses songs to the producers for free. Nice tip of the hat.

Anyone think Oscar voters will be intrigued about a double Oscar win for Winslet? They saw how great it was at the Golden Globes… maybe it will repeat at the Oscars! I would absolutely love that.

I know I just trashed the Globes a few posts back, but if the Oscars decide to match the Globes on the big four awards – Slumdog, Boyle, Rourke, and Winslet – I’ll be extremely pleased.

I wish Winslet would have just won the Best Actress award, leaving the Supporting category to Cruz. It felt so strange that VCB won Best Picture, while she went home empty-handed.

    E-Rock,

Rourke is a huge Guns N’ Roses fan. Also, Rose let them use Sweet Child O’ Mine without charging royalties on it.

Oh, that’s a cool thing to do.

  41. Gareth Avatar
    Gareth

For all the awards I thought were phony, predictable, and just plain ridiculous (Paquin? really? Winslet twice? Really?), the HFP redeemed themselves by recognising Rourke.
God I hope he wins the Oscar..though Penn still has the best shot (Langella is an outside shot now).

  42. E-Rock Avatar
    E-Rock

Very classy Winslet, at least you didn’t say “whats-her-face.” LOL.

  43. Xavi Rodriguez Avatar
    Xavi Rodriguez

I’m glad for Kate Winslet, but I still think she deserves more for her outstanding Hannah Schmidtz in “the Reader” instead RR. I only hope she didn’t have the Sigourney Weaver curse.

Double Oscars for a same actor? I doubt it but not impossible.

Anyway, the SAGs will tell us who’s next. For my part, I still predicting Winslet in supporting and Streep in lead and so in the OScars, but that night proof me I’m wrong and I subestimate Winslet and RR.

  44. E-Rock Avatar
    E-Rock

I’m not gonna say that Langella sucked… but he was way to stereotype-Nixon… Just like most portrayals of the man. To me, Nixon should be left alone… the story has been done to death.

  45. D Avatar
    D

Gareth, I agree. I hope Rourke can win it. I think The Wrestler is the best movie of the year and his performance is heartbreaking. He’s also not politically correct, which makes me like him even more. That speech was hilarious, thanking his agent for “having the balls to take a chance” on him a few years ago.

  46. Guy Lodge Avatar

Agreed, JS (though I was personally rooting for Tomei).

I’d like the Academy to follow the Revolutionary Road lead and reward Winslet there, if they want to give her something. I know there are some die-hard Winslet fans here, but she doesn’t need both in one year. No actor does. It’s silly.

  47. Scott Ward Avatar
    Scott Ward

I haven’t seen the two films yet, but Guy, if someone deserves to win two Oscars, shouldn’t they win?

  48. Kate Avatar
    Kate

Wow that was amazing. First the much deserved Sally Hawkins, then Colin for In Bruges, plus Kate and Mickey. Brilliant. If only Marisa Tomei had gotten supporting over Kate, it would have been perfect. I think Kate getting both was a bit much, especially since Tomei was more deserving in that category. And In Bruges should have won over Vicky Christina.

Mickey’s speech made me teary. It was so beautiful, genuine and honest. I just love that man. And he’s right about Aronofsky being an incredible talent, that man is brilliant.

I am so glad to see Rourke and Hawkins get the recognition they deserve.

Penn goes to the Critics Choice Awards but not the Golden Globes? Is that because Milk wasn’t nominated for Best Picture?

  50. Steven Avatar

I personally think Kate’s better performance is for “The Reader.” And I’m not one of those people who cares if she wins a leading Oscar first. I think it’s one of her best performances ever and I’d just love to see that get rewarded.

And yes, if someone truly gave the two best performances of the year, I think it’s silly to spread the wealth. Best is best, not second best to someone else’s performance but they’re winning the lead award so I’ll check my vote for someone else.

    ~Steven
