If you feel like hanging out here and pondering, kvetching, bitching or (here’s a novel idea) enthusing over the results, we’d love your company. For those wanting to watch the show live, catch the stream here.
OK, that’s a wrap, guys. Sorry for the delay in posting those last results, but your generous and frenzied readership meant the server was a little tricky to handle this past half-hour. I’ll offer more ordered thought and commentary tomorrow, but for now, let me say I’m pretty thrilled with how the evening panned out overall. Right now, however, it’s 4:30am where I am, and my bed looks like a pretty inviting place to be. See you in the morning.
Best Picture – Drama: “Slumdog Millionaire”
It is written.
Best Actor in a Drama: Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”
Yes, yes, yes and yes again. I knew if Rourke could score anywhere it would be here, but still, I didn’t trust the Foreign Press to be that cool. Congratulations, HFPA members, for getting it right where most of the major critics’ groups got it wrong. Are you paying attention, SAG?
Best Drama Series: “Mad Men”
Well, duh. Nice to see Matt Weiner get his Globe moment after last year’s win went unseen, though.
Best Actress in a Drama: Kate Winslet, “Revolutionary Road”
Wow. I mean, just… wow. Who saw that coming? Unprecedented, I should think. (EDIT: Not quite. Sigourney Weaver accomplished the same feat in 1988. My bad.) In any case, a fair reward for a fine performance — so was that undeserved supporting award really necessary, HFPA?
(More winners after the jump.)
Best Picture – Musical/Comedy: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Who cares what happens in the Drama categories? This is the best slate of Musical/Comedy winners I can remember since, well, I don’t know when.
Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy: Colin Farrell, “In Bruges”
Ha, so my last-minute hunch came through. Allow me to feel all smug and satisfied — not just because of that, but because Farrell was easily the most deserving of the bunch. I’m ecstatic. Speech of the night so far too… is is too late to give him an Oscar nod? (Yes, but still…)
Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”
And the Oscar goes to… start engraving it now, folks. And you won’t hear any complaint from me — a brilliant filmmaker, unrewarded for too long, and one of the single nicest people I’ve ever met. Maybe it’s not his best film, but what’s new?
By the way, I realize I’ve been a little snide about four-time winner “John Adams” tonight, so in the interests of balance, let me point you to Kris’ rather more measured, intelligent assessment here.
Okay, so Steven Spielberg is a genius of sorts and I bow to no one in my admiration for Martin Scorsese. But will anyone think me disrespectful if I use the Cecil B. DeMille award as an opportunity to run to the kitchen and make myself another hot-chocolate-cognac toddy? (Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.)
Best Actress in a Comedy Series: Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
Can we just pretend it’s for “Saturday Night Live” instead?
Best Original Score: A.R. Rahman, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Richly deserved. (Side note: could there be a weirder combination of presenters than P Diddy and Kate Beckinsale?)
Best Comedy Series: “30 Rock”
I’ve tried to like “30 Rock.” Hell, I’ve tried just to get “30 Rock.” I don’t. It’s my failing. Let’s move on. (I love you, “Weeds.”)
Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie: Paul Giamatti, “John Adams”
I won’t lie to you, I had that one typed out before the envelope was opened. Are we done with “John Adams” now? Can we file it away in the archives of Worthy Achievements Stuffed With Great Actors That No One Will Ever Watch Again?
Best Actor in Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
OK, I know “30 Rock” hasn’t been winning awards for the last ten years running. It just feels that way.
Best Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, “Slumdog Millionaire”
The film remains a triumph of directing over writing for me, but with that beige slate of nominees, I’m hardly complaining.
Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries: Laura Linney, “John Adams”
Well, I do love Laura Linney, at least.
Best Foreign Language Film: “Waltz With Bashir”
I want so badly to love this film. Why don’t I? Answers on a postcard, please.
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”
Well, of course. Even the Globes couldn’t screw that one up.
Best TV Movie or Miniseries: “John Adams”
Idle question… has anyone ever watched “John Adams” more than once?
Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy: Sally Hawkins, “Happy-Go-Lucky”
Sorry for the delay, but I had to savour that moment. For the first time in a very long while in my history of awards-watching I feel genuinely proud of a winner. Nicely done, Ms. Hawkins — and stunning glam-up job too.
Best Animated Feature: “WALL-E”
The biggest upset since … oh, I don’t know … gravity?
Best Actress in a Drama Series (TV): Anna Paquin, “True Blood”
Seriously? Well, I guess January Jones is insanely beautiful, madly talented and in the best show on TV, so she doesn’t need any extra hardware to prove it. And I’ve always liked Anna Paquin but … seriously?
Best Actor in a Drama Series (TV): Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”
OK, so Jon Hamm won last year. But still.
Best Supporting Actress (TV): Laura Dern, “Recount”
My God, Dern was stunning in this. If it had been a theatrical release, she’d be racking up awards, mark my words.
Best Supporting Actor (TV): Tom Wilkinson, “John Adams”
Maybe it’s a British thing, but I was left thoroughly unmoved by “John Adams.” But hell, I’m happy to see Tom Wilkinson win anything.
Best Original Song: “The Wrestler” from “The Wrestler”
Inevitable, uncontestable, inarguable.
Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet, “The Reader”
Sigh… why couldn’t the “OMG Kate Winslet has to win something” mentality have been this strong four years ago? You know, when she actually deserved it?

Woot! Winslet breaks her streak.
I got that wrong. I picked Adams. 0/1
Song up next, WALL-E gets this.
DAMN IT!!! 0-2 tonight
Thanks so much, James!
Live stream here, guys: http://en.justin.tv/mordane2
Kate Winslet: horrible acceptance speech. Too needy.”Look Mummy Won!” Do we really want to delegate Winslet to winning a Supporting Oscar?
Bruce Springsteen’s smugness with beating Clint Eastwood was amusing.
NPH all the way here.
Does anyone here care about TV stuff? I don’t
Oh geez, Neil needs to beat Jermery already.
FUCK YEAH LAURA DERN!!
Laura here I bet
All I can think about is Jurassic Park when Laura Dern appears
I couldn’t care less about TV, but holy hell Recount was good.
seeing Tom Wilkinson on stage makes me remember how brilliant he was in In The Bedroom and to a lesser extent, Michael Clayton and Batman Begins.
Michael Clayton sucked and did not deserve to be at the Oscars last year.
Has Kate Winslet taken the pole position in supporting finally? Very interesting how that race has turned out…
Don Cheadle is bombing and it’s painful.
Bye the way, does anybody else hate when they have little teases on when the globes will come back. YEAH!!! BURN AFTER READING!!! That movie was awesome. Wassup Tapley
I feel bad for Eva Mendez. It’s kinda embarrassing to be introduced as star of “The Spirit”
Was it a particularly ambitious effort? No, but Michael Clayton certainly did not suck.
FUCK TV
Anthony, this is why I love film. Everybody’s opinion can be totally different. John Campea is a genius. BTW… Isn’t that wicked awkward? When they randomly figure out that the dude couldn’t be there so fucking Zack Efron has to accept it. Sucks
Streep won’t win this one.
There’s a difference between opinions being different and something sucking.
Michael Clayton was well-made and competent whether you happened to appreciate it at a high level or not.
Sorry.
My girlfriend hated Michael Clayton. I want to use it as an instructional tool in a screenwriting class. I love that script.
You know what really sucked? Burn After Reading. It was like if Peter Segel directed the Big Lebowski. They played it way too serious this time, and it make it hard for the target audience to be able to enjoy it, because the aesthetic was so damn serious.
” The trouble with Holocaust movies is there are never gag reels on the DVD”
Best Ricky Gervais line ever.
“Stephen Come Quick, The Jonas Brothers have fallen through the ice!”
And..
“They will be missed”
Well, let me re-phrase my quote:
From my view, the movie sucked. But, that doesn’t mean it sucks flat out. It might have been competent and well made, but I think it wasn’t as special as everyone thought it was. The movie’s quality was not why it sucked, it is because of it’s over-hype. In comparison to what people think it is, I say it sucks. Alone, it was ok. But in comparison, it sucks.
Don’t be sorry. In fact, thanks for giving your opinion. I think that is the real joy of films. OH, Animated coming up
If WALL-E doesn’t win:
ME= Bull-shit.
Gervais was just awesome right there.
I don’t mean to get into an argument either. I’m just saying, I don’t think you can say something as well-crafted as Michael Clayton “sucked”.
I think it’s brilliant, for the record. But, I could see how some would be less than enthused. “Sucks” is a reach though.
Check your email, Guy. ;)
E-Rock. Fair assessment of Michael Clayton. It depreciates in repeated viewing, but I still think the script holds up pretty well as a popcorn film.
Gervais was hilarious.
WALL-E: FUCK YES!!!
1/3 on the night.
By the way…
FUCK THE JONASES!
By the way, I live where Stanton did.
Andrew:
Once again, I say that is totally subjective.
Why does Johnny Depp always have the demeanor of a recently convicted convict getting his photo taken at these things?
Ha. When you preface it like that, it’s much more tolerable.
“recently convicted convict” clearly didn’t think that much about that sentence..
I guess I’m really going to have to see Happy Go Lucky now.
“Best Original Song: “The Wrestler†from “The Wrestlerâ€
Inevitable, uncontestable, inarguable.”
Only problem is the song kind of sucks and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Down to Earth’ was 100x better. Guess you can’t compete with The Boss even when his songs are crappy, though.
I can’t read lips, but it sure looked like Dustin Hoffman was saying to Emma Thompson “I Voted For You” right before the break.
Pat:
I’m glad somebody agrees with me. I thought I was the only dude who didn’t like it.
DAMN… 1/4 I SUCK TONIGHT…
I have a huge Oscar party each year, and I have won the pool two straight. Hope I do better than I am doing here.
I love Johnny Depp as an actor. I hope he does Batman 3.
Yeah, I gotta see HGL now too.
Supporting actor movie, will be after the break
Matt, “The Wrestler” is an amazing song.
E-rock,
Unfortunately, I might have led you to think I didn’t like Michael Clayton. I actually love that film, particularly the scene in Arthur’s Apartment. I just recognize that its no masterpiece. It’s just, that last scene with Tilda Swinton and Clooney never felt right.
Great teaser commercial for “Heroes.”
WALL-E an upset? HOW?
Yeah, I thought Down to Earth would win too.
I am really sucking tonight.
Ledger = Lock to win.
“Cranford” looks charming.
Joel:
Yeah, looked cool. I stopped watching Heroes during the shit known as Season 2. 1 was great though, and I have that on DVD
Pat:
I see where you are coming from. I can recognize why you like it.
YEAH.
John Adams, great mini-series.
Recount was also awesome.
I haven’t seen the other ones though.
Get to the Heath Ledger Memorial Award, already!!!
