First set of winner predictions

Clint Eastwood in Gran TorinoBefore the holiday I thought I’d make my first calls on the year’s Oscar winners.  Bear in mind we don’t even have a list of nominees yet and anything can happen.  I think around this time last year I was predicting “Into the Wild” for across-the-board wins and it only managed two nominations at the end of the day, so, grain of salt and all that.  I just like to go on the record around this time, so here we go:

Best Picture: “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Actor: Clint Eastwood, “Gran Torino”
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”

Anything BUT “WALL-E” for Best Sound Editing and Mixing? LOL. “The Dark Knight” is a non-contender here. I’ve heard people actually complain about its mixing. Not happening.

I also highly doubt the chances of “Slumdog Millionaire” winning in any category, let alone Best Adapted Screenplay. I don’t think it’ll even be nominated here. It’s a great movie, but I can’t help but feel it is REALLY underwritten, and you can’t deny the characters are more 2d archetypes than anything. Not a great achievement in writing, but definitely in direction.

All these people thinking “WALL-E” has the sound wins in the bag are so cute. The only Pixar film to win in either category was “The Incredibles” and even that film was beat out in the mixing category by a non-musical musical that had no business being there in the first place. Plus, frankly, the Academy at large doesn’t have the sophistication to understand the sound wizardry of “WALL-E.”

“The Dark Knight,” meanwhile, will be sitting there with nominations in multiple tech categories. You don’t think the Academy is going to want to recognize the highest grossing film of the year somewhere other than supporting actor? Just look to the “Bourne” wins of last year. Respected actioners do well here.

I could see sound editing going WALL-E’s way, but not both. When you’ve been doing this a while, you tend to stop giving the Academy the benefit of the doubt.

  25. red_wine Avatar
    red_wine

Wall-E is a near silent film, therefore the sound design is right at the forefront. I don’t usually tend to notice the sound design much but in Wall-E, it was far all to see. And I think the nice little featurettes and interviews released by Pixar will help.

Sound Editing was especially genius I think because the 2 leading characters only have ticks and sounds as their dialogue.

I think the sound branch would especially worship this film because this is a major achievement in the way of sound. But yes, I agree Kris, since the entire academy votes in the final ballot, the non-sound people might vote indiscriminately and scatter the awards.

But I hope that in the way that we suppose they might be thinking of rewarding The Dark Knight in odd categories, they wight also be wondering how to reward the most celebrated film of the year(so far).

Why in the world is everyone saying “Slumdog Millionaire” for Best Adapted Screenplay? It’s not winning… this category is clearly between “Benjamin Button,” “Reader,” and “Revolutionary Road.” If “Slumdog” won I would be totally and absolutely shocked, and it would be really undeserved.

“If “Slumdog” won I would be totally and absolutely shocked, and it would be really undeserved.”

At least now it’s clear your personal feelings are clouding your judgment, English. See The Reader. See Rev. Road. See Ben Button. Then we’ll talk.

Spuji: No, this is honestly where I think things will fall at the moment. I think most big races will be Slumdog vs. Button and I have a feeling voters will go with warmth over chill. Simple as that.

Kris, you can’t honestly tell me “Slumdog” is a great achievement in writing? The characters are really underdeveloped and it’s totally apparent… I can’t see people shrugging that off when there’s something as major and prestigious as a Fitzgerald or Yates adaptation.

Yeah, I think it’s a fantastic achievement in writing. Especially when you understand the source material. I’m guessing you don’t?

And even without that, it’s a grand example of visual storytelling in my opinion. Fine to disagree though. It’s still the best film of the year for me (though I saw something yesterday that surprised the hell out of me by nearly taking that spot), and that has a lot to do with the writing.

And again, on those “prestigious” adaptations. See the movies, then we’ll chat. Slumdog could beat it. Nothing else, and certainly not Rev. Road.

Also, my feelings and yours are really beside the point. The Academy is always going to make a heart vote and Slumdog has it in spades over the frigidity of the other players. Whether you like the film or not, that’s a fairly inarguable point.
