POLL: Who deserves it? — BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
First off, I was rather surprised that the inclusion of “In Bruges” in the original screenplay category was the readership’s pick for happiest surprise, just edging out Michael Shannon. Very interesting.
Anyway, I’m going to be running the next few polls a couple at a time throughout the next month. So here’s your chance to pick which contender of the nominees in each category deserves to win.
We’ll start with Best Visual Effects. So have at it in the sidebar poll!

POLL: Which Oscar surprise were you most happy with?
Alright, I’m settled in here in Santa Barbara. It’s rainy. Fitting. Anyway, the sidebar poll is certainly dated this week. A moot point altogether, so I thought I’d offer up a list of this morning’s surprises and throw it out to you: which one were you most happy to see?
If something else tickled your fancy, tell us in the comments section below (assuming we’re stable for long enough to keep the comments open…busy day).

POLL: Can a Best Picture nomination for ‘The Dark Knight’ help the Oscar telecast ratings?
After a healthy one-week run, the majority of the readership seems to think “WALL-E” has the best show at upsetting the agreed-upon five for a Best Picture bid. “The Wrestler” and “Doubt” filled out the top three. But this week, running on the assumption that the caped Crusader will slide in after all, I thought I’d ask whether it will matter for the show’s ratings.
Of course, a number of things could make a perfect storm in this sceneario, a “Dark Knight” nod being just one of them. We have two exciting new producing talents at bat and a new host that could bring out the voyeurs. But specifically as it regards a Best Picture nod for the Bat, can that spike the ratings for a show that has continued to dwindle? Tell us in the sidebar poll!

POLL: Which of these films has the best shot at upsetting the apparently “locked” five?
Alright, I let that “Revolutionary Road” poll run its course through the New Year, as promised, and it seems most readers feel the film has, for the most part, received the undeserved shaft this awards season. Now we can finally get a fresh query out to the readership.
Assuming, what with PGA, WGA, DGA and ACE nailing things shut, that the Oscar frontrunners for Best Picture are “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” which film has the best shot of upsetting the group? Personally, I think only five films are in that mix, but I left an “other” option in this week’s sidebar poll, just in case.
