‘Sherlock Holmes’ trailer

Written by

I have to say, this looks sillier than I anticipated.  It’s comical (not in the way intended) and leans a bit too heavy on the farce throttle.  When the title screen came up, I chuckled.  It’s not to say that the film doesn’t look fun, because clearly it does.  But it has a rather unwelcome gloss to it and, of course, is such a bastardization of the source material that I’m glad we have some time to square ourselves with the direction of the project before release.

Anyway, that’s me.  What do you think?

I’m there, my friend. I’m there. It looks really good. Good ol’ Downey. Should be fun.

Not sure I’m on board for the over-stylized approach. Could’ve been cooler as a darker, more realistic mystery movie with a touch of dry, British wit. But then again, it probably wouldn’t find the audience that this one is aiming for.

Looks like a lot of fun with a strong cast. I’m definitely in.

I’ve been done with Ritchie for a while. I don’t expect this to change things. Law looks rather better than Downey, though.

Sherlock Holmes in a slow-mo fist fight?

Wow, I’m sorry but this looks bad. I love Downey Jr, but I’m not seeing this. McAdams looks really hot though.

Ha! the last bit there is funny.

There is no harm in using Robert Downey Jr’s comedic talents. But the slow-motion-action movie-thing looks a little silly. Nevertheless, overall, it appears to be entertaining. I agree, wish it were a little darker though, too glossy.

Downey’s accent and Holmesian style intellectual eccentricity looks much better than I anticipated. Eddie Marsan will likely nail this as well.

That said, watching Holmes do kung fu against seven-foot tall assassins makes me cringe in pain.

BAB nailed it, definitely a WILD WILD WEST vibe. Jude appears to be the standout.

Hopefully this helps elevate Regina George’s start power. She deserves it; she has two Fendis and a silver Lexus.

I got the same kind of vibe I got watching the trailer for the first Pirates of the Caribbean. Looks like a well-written and well-acted blockbuster with some great humor and action.

It looks better than I expected it to be. Obviously it will just be a good time at the movies that isn’t as serious as the source material. I’ll be at the theater to see this.

I agree the slow-mo action stuff is silly, but let us not be convinced that it’s a decision by Guy Ritchie rather than the marketing squad handling the trailer. As ridiculous as that stuff was, I thought the rest of it looked very good. Downey is certainly finding a style that fits him well, between this and Iron Man.

The speed ramp is definitely in the film as it’s obviously done in camera and not in post.

Also, while this looks fun, it’s just another example of the farce that is Hollywood pandering to fans. All through development and production, cast and crew swear up and down that they are being respectful to the source material and wanting to make a movie that shows how smart Holmes was and how he really would have worked in those days. Then the trailer comes out and he’s throwing hammers at giants while dodging a fireball.

Or McG swearing that he really wants to honor the Terminator movies and the mythology of the series and of course the early reviews say the action is great and the humans are cardboard. On and on and on. Makes me think you gotta respect Michael Bay for never putting up a front.

Hartigan makes a good point. These days directors and producers sometimes really do lie out of their asses. I cant count how many interviews with Gavin Hood I read where he goes on and on about keeping the focus on “character and plot.” Then Wolverine comes out and it’s anything but that. Looks like the same thing is happening with McG and Terminator.
