‘The Artist’ trailer

Written by

Guy offered up the new poster for Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist” yesterday. Today we get a look at the trailer for the film, which played at Cannes, is set for Toronto and will more than likely pop up in Telluride, too. The first Gurus chart of the year had it very much in contention for a Best Picture nomination, so you can count this as one of the big possibilities of the upcoming season. Check out the trailer via Apple by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump. (But beware. It seems to me it lays out the whole damn story.)

Whats the score in the trailer during the later half? This looks fantastic, been anticipating it ever since all the praise I heard it receiving at Cannes.

It’s from the Life of David Gale score.

I’m not the biggest fan of silent films (I know, I know I’m missing out on a countless number of great films) but ‘The Artist’ may be the one to break that trend. The score is gorgeous and I was thoroughly engaged throughout the trailer which hopefully translates to the film itself. Looking forward to it.

Strange that they’re filching other music for the trailer when the film’s own score would do so nicely.

The trailer is a little heavy on the exposition, but it’s not really a story that trades in surprises — it’s the most classical of arcs, so the chief pleasures lie in the execution.

This trailer reminded me of why I love “Purple Rose of Cairo” so-so much.

I look forward to seeing this in the theater.

This also brings up a question – in the battle of “charmers” which, do you think, will charm ’em more, the Artist or Midnight in Paris?

The Academy has the same problem as our country’s political sphere…always looking backward instead of forward. I can’t possibly root for this. Should we really indulge their conservative inclinations?

I should probably clarify my question a little bit. I was refering to the reception these films might have with the Academy and whether, in a movie competitive field this year, one can push the other out of the BP contention.

For some reason films hardly ever use their own scores in trailers. I mean if you’re going to use something else at least try and be creative like Social Network with Creep or Dragon Tattoo with Immigrant Song.

Nothing is worse than when a trailer uses some popular Clint Mansell or John Murphy track. It makes me despise the entire trailer.

Granted I love the two Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy trailers. I had forgotten how good The Wolf Man and X-Men scores were.

“always looking backward instead of forward. I can’t possibly root for this.”

On the contrary, Tony, I believe it is your argument that’s inredibly BACKwards.

You can’t possibly rule for it why? Just because it’s “old-fashioned” doesn’t mean it’s backward or conservative. Besides, when was the last time you’ve seen a movie like it made? I’m not saying it’s completely original cause it ain’t but compared to the legions of same-looking films this is cutting edge stuff.

Maxim: I’d say The Artist has slightly more “weight”, in the relative scheme of things, than Midnight in Paris — with the added drawcard for voters that it’s expressly about their industry. (Plus it’ll be fresher in their minds, and it’ll have the force of Weinstein behind it. But ultimately I don’t think either is specifically a threat to the other.)

Tony Rock: You could say that about any period piece, no? The trick lies in locating the present in the past, and I think The Artist does that rather neatly — particularly with regard to the theme of an ever-shifting artform.

    Thanks for your take, Guy.

And speaking of music in trailers/ads – it seems like Daft Punk may be the new Clint Mansell :D.

Looks different than I had imagined. But I think it’ll be a winner (not literally, though, perhaps). Guy, I know there’s been talk of Dujardin. Who is the girl, and does she not factor in as much?

  13. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

tony: That has to be one of the most wrong-headed assessments of ANYTHING I’VE EVER SEEN IN THIS SPACE.

The role call of films that would cease to exist under your incredibly misguided view is also breathtaking.

Unless, of course, you’d care to clarify and/or fine tune your currently broad point.

  14. Guy Lodge Avatar

JJ1: The girl is Argentinian actress Bérénice Bejo, she’s a major presence in the film (virtually a co-lead) and she’s very good in it. I’ve been predicting a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her from the get-go, and to be honest, I’m surprised more people aren’t doing the same.

(I’ve also heard a rumour that she was Kirsten Dunst’s closest competition in the Cannes jury deliberations for Best Actress.)

Uhm, this is the French trailer, released ages ago, with English titles, references to Goodman and Cromwell removed (pity) and maybe a few other tweaks. Given the rabidity (I say that lovingly!) of the site’s readership, it strikes me as a touch odd that the footage is new to a good chunk of you. Still, looks pretty amazing for my money. Hoping to catch it at TIFF!!

Yeah, I was fairly certain there was a trailer for this out already (non-US), and I even though it may have been posted on here around the time of Cannes.

Also, this Dujardin guy keeps reminding me of Gene Kelly in some of the shots in the trailer.

  19. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Lucas: I recognized that instantly. Alas, when it debuted via Apple, I posted it here.

That trailer gave me chills. The Artist was already one of my most anticipated, but it rivals or possibly tops We Need to Talk About Kevin for the #1 spot. Cannot wait.

    Also, up yours, Tony.

Similarly, why must movies promote dishonesty by making up stories? I demand that the only movies produced be documentaries. About the present or the future.

Looks like it could be interesting, to say the least.

I really want to watch OSS 117 now. I love those films so much.

Are the last three posts by Zack, DOTA and cctv camera china pure spam?

Don’t seem relevant at all to this thread.

I refuse to watch the trailer, but I am eagerly anticipating this film nonetheless!

I wonder how long it’ll take to come down to Australia?

The others were spam, but I think you’re missing Zack’s dry little joke.

This may be about 5 months early, but …

does anyone get a vibe/buzz/reaction/prediction/feeling that this movie could win the big one?

It doesn’t seem like a ‘winner’, and I don’t think it could, but stranger things have happened?

Zack, I think we should go even further. Documentaries without narration and added bias. No talking heads, either, because their stories are unreliable. Could be fabricated! I just wanted to be presented with images of the most cutting-edge struggles filmmakers can document.

Perfect! We present….The silent documentary film.

    How backwardly forward-looking of us.

I can’t imagine this winning Best Picture (unless there’s a whole lot more to it that isn’t shown here, like him being captured by Nazis and spending the second half of the film surviving the holocaust), but it certainly looks interesting and something different from what we get these days.

I also have a hard time picturing this winning Best Picture. I have come around on it for major nominations (though I suspect it’s lack of name recognition will hurt it in some categories), I just can’t see it actually winning. I mean this in a slightly joking manner, but they haven’t gone with a silent film since “Wings”.

I’m still very intrigued to see the film myself, though.

I was a bit skeptical about this but the trailer has sold me. I already have my ticket set in Toronto. I had bought a Visa Screening Room Weekend Pass and The Artist was included.

For some reason the lead woman’s makeup keeps taking me out of the universe, which seems otherwise picture perfect. She definitely has a very contemporary look.
