Taking questions for Oscar Talk

Posted by · 10:51 am · August 25th, 2011

If you can get them in quickly, we’re going to be recording tomorrow’s podcast in a few. I forgot to put this up earlier in the week, but anyway, maybe there is something pressing you want to run by us. Try to keep it to one question if you can. Rattle them off and we’ll see what we can get to.

Why does the Academy insist on hiring the worst people for the job? Be it producers or hosts.

What’s the word on Moneyball? It’s in your 10, Kris, and Jonah Hill is in your Supporting Actor predictions, which is new as of this week. Must be some good buzz!

Is there one movie that Jessica Chastain can manage solidifying enough support over to act as a larger body of work nomination this year?

Setting a full solid 10 used to assure that there wouldn’t be any “lone director” nominees in those years (when a director would be nominated for a film not nominated for Best Picture), but with the process slightly differing this year so that there aren’t necessarily more slots do you guys think it could be possible again?

Nothing on Take Shelter? Looking at the Contenders section, it doesn’t look like it will sniff even a single nomination. What have you heard about it?

On the field of BP nominations: doesn’t it seem, in concept, that there will be no more than, say, 6 or 7 noms, rather than as many as 10?

5% of #1 votes is A LOT to ask for if you really think about it.

If there ARE as many as 10, will that be a product of studios begging certain members of AMPAS to vote for their film(s) so that they can reach the magic number of 5%?

Albert Brooks for Supporting in Drive has dropped to 14th on your list. Has the buzz disappeared or has it not begun yet?

How do you think certain genre films(Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Drive, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo) will do financially, critically, and award wise?

You seemed a bit apprehensive after posting the trailer for Carnage. Do you think it has a chance of getting noms for all four leads? If not, who has the best chance?

Which film released in the first half of 2011, other than The Tree of Life, do you see getting an across-the-board studio push for Oscar nominations?
