And for the record, I’ve never considered myself a Malick fan. I still haven’t even seen The New World. If you asked me to name my 10 favorite working directors, he might not even make the list. So keep in mind that my previous comments are not coming from some Malick obsessive.

Maxim: I get what you’re saying, I do. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. For me, the end product is always what should define someone as visionary. If a film is really like nothing you’ve ever seen, and the director continues to surprise you consistently, never giving you quite what you would expect, and changes or challenges the way you look at the possibilities of cinema, that, to me, is the mark of a visionary. Directors like Malick, Jackson, Nolan, Cameron, PT Anderson, the Coen brothers, Scorsese, Aronofsky, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Spielberg, and yes, even Lucas (at least back in the day).

It was most definitely one of the most anticipated film of next year… The Cinematography was well done but based on the trailer, for me, nothing stood out… Though I can feel Brad Pitt’s presence, I just hope it wouldn’t be something like Benjamin Button… (as much as I like that movie)

I don’t get the much hype for this movie… Was this just made for the sake of awards?

Even though, I won’t miss this for the world next year… Also excited…

    More beautiful shots of trees…yawn.

My worst fear…it’s the next The New World.
My hope…it’s the next The Fountain.

I don’t mean to be judgemental, Malick’s obviously his own filmmaker, but is there a plot to this movie, or is it all shots of nature and space with a voiceover.

Why won’t you watch it, Guy? I really think you should, and you certainly don’t have to worry about it giving stuff away.

    Terrence Malick likes alligators.

DylanS – Plots are for cemeteries. Here’s hoping it’s just space, nature and voiceovers.

Jessica Chastain could be Bryce Dallas Howard’s twin. Even their voices sound the same.

For once, Chad and I completely agree.

Nice music. Is it original music composed for the film by Desplat? or does anyone recognize it from somewhere else?

Breathtaking. The upside down shot of the shadows… Swimming out of the house… I feel sorry for people complaining about this, I guess they’re either ‘too cool for school’ hipsters or geeks that think great cinema is something like Tron: Legacy. This looks astonishing. Thank god there are cinematic artists like Malick that can still get funding.

Actually Kevin, I really like what you said here, especially about changing expectations of cinema. I cannot argue with that. I, too, love the filmmakers who do that for me and agree with most people you’ve listed.

I’m also thinking of Sofia Coppola, Woody Allen, Kubrick, Linklater, Aronofsky and, at one point, Terry Gilliam and Ridley Scott.

And I won’t argue with inclusion of Lucas at all, to me he’s always been a great cinematic talent, which I think deserves more respect (and movies).

If the plot becomes too explicit in the trailer it eliminates the mystery and would draw accusations of conventionality. If Brad Pitt’s in it with a nice haircut, kids in hand, and no scar on his neck you think it’s Benjamin Button. If you see a shot of trees, you think it’s going to be a nature documentary. You complain about shots of a tree and let you love The Fountain. You hate that it has voiceover, although you probably like Election or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I’m sure Malick is heartbroken that some sniveling youngsters on a movie webboard are making uninformed, snide comments about a film that demanded a lot of his time, energy and passion.

Again, here we go with the insults.

Did ever occur to you, Keil that people aren’t commenting about the presence of voiceover as such but about what is actually said in it? Is the
difference between a device and the actual content that unclear to you? Or are you just trying to label anyone who is somehow less-then-worshepful as wothless just because they happened to not meet your idea as to what a proper reaction should be?

Whatever the case is, comments like “snivering youngsters” show that you are unable to engage in actual debate and result to two of the cheapest tactics avaialble – name calling and sympathy (ie – “film that demanded a lot of his time, energy and passion”). Very convincing.

But hey, let’s marginalize everyone and pretend that commenting on a trailer (the thing that is chosen to present the film to the world) and not, you know, the entire movie after seeing it is uninformed. That doesn’t consitute whining, by the way.

I am sure that Malick is stoked that he has such staunch non-discriminating supporters as a mature, joke a post, sight-unseen passion calorie mesuring internet form typist such as yourself.

All of that said, I think the trailer is superb.
