At Cannes, I was with the critical majority in admiring Mike Leigh’s latest, and the valentines will surely continue to roll in when the film plays Toronto next month ahead of an awards-season run. The Guardian (quite the experts lately in nabbing British trailer exclusives) has the first trailer for the film, which gives a pretty accurate sense of the film’s delicate pitch between dry comedy and crushing drama. Interestingly, rather than granting the spotlight to Lesley Manville’s showy, buzz-generating turn, it represents the film as the ensemble piece it is; one wonders if Sony Pictures Classics will be quite so democratic with the US trailer. Well, Guy. That’s what you get for not giving it 4 stars. You’re not included! :p
The trailer didn’t do anything for me but I just woke up so.. Anyway, I don’t need a trailer to want to see it.
Oh that looks lovely. Can’t wait to see it.
Trailer doesn’t really give much of a sense of what the movie is actually about, but it does look “lovely,” as Matt King says. I’ve loved Leigh’s work of late, so I’m kinda stoked for this.
Nice little tease, this is. 2010 is starting to look fine.
It looks great. Now I have more expectatives about it.
This year keeps improving itself.
Oh that looks absolutely wonderful.
It looks absolutely lovely. Cannot wait.
As an ensemble piece wouldn’t Lesley Manville be supporting rather than lead? I haven’t seen the film, but judging from the trailer it seems Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen are the leads.
Manville’s is the character whose arc undergoes the most dramatic shift through the film, while Sheen and Broadbent’s characters remain constant throughout. I would argue that they’re all leads, but Manville’s plight propels the narrative — she is in no way subordinate to the other two. If she’s classified as supporting, then that will go for the entire cast.
What a well-made trailer. I have a feeling about the film, but don’t necessarily know about it too much. Wonderful.
This looks really really good! Something to get excited about this year. Looks touching but with a bit of melancholy. Can’t wait.
