Same-but-different ‘A Single Man’ trailer

Well, they may have buggered up the poster, but they knew better than to mess with the gorgeous trailer we saw back in September. The Weinsteins’ first official trailer for Tom Ford’s startling debut replays the lush, wordless montage of the original, with a couple of Oscar-chasing quotes inserted for effect. (And not subtly, either: “There is already Oscar buzz for Julianne Moore” isn’t a critical endorsement, it’s a non-statement.)

Regardless, it’s still neck-and-neck with “A Serious Man” (don’t tell me you’re still hazy on those titles) for the ‘trailer of the year’ distinction.

But they DID mess with the trailer…

The original trailer relied on pinpoint editing to cram in as many great images as possible… but now that they’ve stuck quotes and extra title screens in, they have had to re-edit it and edit some of those images out, and the trailer is not exactly what it was and is a little more boring. Bring back the original Single Man trailer!!!

the trailer is amazing, I am dying to see the film. I do think the first trailer was a little bit better b/c it wasn’t trying so hard to be ambiguous (about Colin Firth’s character) and I get bored reading random quotes from critics in trailers that are calling out for attention – I’d prefer to just let the visuals and the music sell the film without the added and unnecessary endorsements. I do agree this trailer is beautiful and it is definitely getting me into the theater opening night.

Also, I do think the first trailer for this film is one of the best trailers of the year, along with the trailer for A serious man, the teaser for Inception, and the first trailer for Up in the Air.

I prefer the first one. This is still beautiful, but the first one was truly amazing. Some of the quotes they put in are really ridicioulous, I mean, has ‘she has oscar buzz’ been ever put in a trailer before?Plus, the gay aspect is definitely more hidden-the scene with what I assume is the hustler (with cigarette smoke coming out of his mouth) is gone. The kiss between Firth and Goode is gone (the kiss between Firth and Moore of course remains).Only Firth and Moore get their names cited at the end.

Well, either way, still one of my most anticipated.

Ok, a scary thought…there’s no chance in hell the Weinsteins would/could change the movie (re-edit a bit or something) to make it more appealing (in their mind) to wider audiences and Academy members, right?cuz that would be horrible.

Both trailers are quite good, but none of the advertising material has really told audiences what the film is actually about.

@Klemen – I really don’t think that would be possible. I don’t think there is any chance in hell that Tom Ford would allow that – he is an obsessive control freak and I don’t think he would go with a deal from a movie studio that would allow them to touch his film in the editing room in any way – no matter what the amount of the money they offered him. I think it is pretty safe to assume the film will be completely intact – gay subtext and homoerotic tendencies included (even if audiences aren’t necessarily being sold that the film will be that way.)

What’s the name of the music theme used in the trailer?

I was already psyched to see this movie so the “new” trailer didn’t really change anything but it was still interesting though it seemed like a lot more Juliane Moore, Weinstiens defently want two oscar nominations for the film at least.

    Julianne Moore FTW!

to geha: Shigeru Umebayashi is credited with contributing music to the film and based on his prior work, I believe it has to be something from him. Whether its from the film or something else, I couldn’t say though.

This movie was excellent and if there were an award for best trailers, this would be my pick. I’m curious to see how well it does under a wider release.

It still seems like they’re scared to say what it’s really about. Or perhaps they’re being coy.

Didn’t anyone else notice the de-gaying of the new trailer? Where’s the kiss between Colin Firth and Matthew Goode in the new one? Central to the story, I’d say, unless you’re downplaying the gay. *Plus* Firth and Julianne Moore are depicted as a romantic couple throughout. Ugh.

I’m disturbed by the de-gaying too. I expressed my thoughts over at AD.

Might this film prove a stronger contender overall than we are currently anticipating? I can’t get Nikki Finke’s headline out of my head: “Harvey Weinstein Promised To Deliver Tom Ford ‘An Oscar’.” Could Ford actually nab a directing nod, especially if the film is marketed as “his” work?

I think it’s a lock for Costume Design, even if Ford didn’t do it himself. I also believe it will be recognized for Art Direction, and perhaps Cinematography.

But we shall see. I can’t wait until it starts screening. Should be any day now.

Is that all of Julianne Moore’s performance?

Alex: I’m not sure what you mean. I think some of you are mistakenly under the impression that Firth and Moore are co-leads. Her role is effective, but quite small.

I mean….in addition to the de-gaying, TWC is advertising Firth and Moore as co-leads.

However, in reality, her role is so small that it is almost featured in its entirety in the trailer.

“However, in reality, her role is so small that it is almost featured in its entirety in the trailer.”

Pretty wild exaggeration there. Have you seen the film?

Julienne Moore’s part isn’t large but I think she has to be in the film for at least 20 minutes or so. And she makes quite an impression, giving you a strong sense of character in a limited amount of time. All the actors, including Goode, leave an impression with the limited time they are on screen.
