First look at Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

Written by

Or, to be more precise, as Selina Kyle, given that the “Dark Knight Rises” machine seems to be avoiding the “Catwoman” moniker. My considered verdict on this: she’s not Michelle Pfeiffer. But then, few people are. Beyond that, I have no opinion, though I’m sure many of you do. Have at it in the comments.

I think the goodwill from The Dark Knight can only go so far. At this point, everything about this film has stunk up the joint: the name is bush league, the teaser was amateur, Bane’s mask looks good from far but far form good, filming in Pittsburgh to save money (I think) and now this worrying picture.

I dunno, there is a LONG way to go and it will probably turn out well in the end but I’m not currently liking what I see.

I still remember all the naysaying when Batman Begins was still in production.

“OMG, What did they do to the batmobile? :(”

I’m going to reserve judgement until I see the FILM, these desperate little snippets of information will never be indicative of the final product.

My initial thought: nice hair and make-up. I’d say a nom there, but there’s no whiskers (a la ‘The Young Victoria’).

    I’m, of course, kidding.

She’s just not who I think of when I think Selina Kyle…an icy blonde comes to mind more than Anne. Maybe Diane Kruger would’ve been interesting for this…

Michelle Pfeiffer will always be Selina Kyle to me.

At least Nolan is clearly doing his own thing and so I think everyone should wait for the movie to come out. This is just one image after all.

    Oh, Michelle.

I know this was probably once said about Nicholson as Joker but I don’t think anyone will ever top Michelle Pfeiffer as Kyle.

I like that she’s wearing the old chunky style IMAX 3D glasses.

This seems to hammer home the fact that Nolan is downplaying the “Catwoman” elements of Selina Kyle’s character. To me, she looks like what I would expect.

But while everybody is talking about how Hathaway looks, nobody seems to be talking about the fact that she’s sitting on the Bat-cycle…did she steal it, or is does this photo hint at the fact that Kyle will be working with Batman in the movie?

Catwoman? Really? She looks more like Batgirl to me.

put your childhood memories away, you all know Burton’s batman is dated and sucks compared to Nolan’s. I want a more realistic Selina Kyle with some emotional weight (unlike the other corny shit) and I know Nolan will bring the goods.

Yeah … it’s more sensible to reserve judgment until the final product comes out, but there’s a reason why some pre-release material elicits excitement and other material doesn’t.

There’s really not much ‘cat-like’ about Catwoman in the first place. She’s a burglar; contrary to what some of the film/TV versions depict, she doesn’t have a bunch of cat-like mannerisms or have some special connection with cats, etc.

  17. Duncan Houst Avatar

This is a joke. It’s not that I don’t like it, which I don’t, but I refuse to believe that this is serious. I am dismissing it as a joke. Nice one, Nolan! Really funny! Hold onto your legit image until next summer!

  18. Andrej Avatar

I don’t know. She doesn’t look much like a cat, and she’s a bit too young to be a woman. I don’t like the glasses/eyeshields things either. I’ll save my comments for the final product or a full body photo of hers.

I think she will have a mask at some point in the film. They were filming this scene outside, so they wanted to release a official picture before the spy one got out. We have no context to why she is wearing the glasses or is on the bat pod. The suit looks great btw.

To be honest, I don’t really know what I think of it. Maybe this is an image of her costume earlier in the film, and it evolves more later on in the story? I dunno, but all I hope is that Nolan delivers a satisfying conclusion to the whole thing.

“you all know Burton’s batman is dated and sucks compared to Nolan’s.”

There’s nothing “dated” about the period art deco production design, costumes, Elfman’s scores, the use of Spherical cinematograpy — in fact outside of the use of a compact disc in Returns and Prince music in ’89 — Burton’s films will continue to hold up because they’re not concern with being Oh So Serious — it’s Batman not slavery.

One word: awkward. I’m hoping for something akin to the Catwoman Ed Brubaker gave us, and I’d like to see that design, too. That would have been a great first reveal, but this is a little off.

    Just my knee-jerk reaction.

“She’s not Michelle Pfeifer.” You mean, she’s not neurotic. And thank God for that. Michelle Pfeifer’s Catwoman sucked. Catwoman is not some weird sexed up nerd who fell out a window. Catwoman is a street-smart, underworld-savvy cat burglar. And this looks like Nolan is giving us exactly what Catwoman is.

Unless you’re an obsessed fanboy nobody should care about the lack of a full mask. It adds nothing to the character. She looks fine. What were you expecting?

What the fuck, Tapley??? You like your Catwoman licking herself and eating canaries?! Come on!!! Catwoman is a burglar, a street-smart, badass mischief-maker! Nolan is delivering; you can count on that.

I agree with mr. Tapley that she looked a bit awkward in that photo, especially with the goggles, and I wasnt very impressed myself. But the new photos of the stuntwoman in the catsuit kind of put me at ease. She looked absolutely fantastic there.

Nolan has never (in my opinion) made anything other than fantastic films and I don’t see why he should disappoint now. He is mr. Consistency himself.

  29. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Pete: Where did I say anything about the Pfeiffer Catwoman? Do you even know who Brubaker is and what he did to the character and why I’m mentioning him here? I gather not.

    /3rtfu11: LOL!

For the record, I’m not “worried” about the movie or anything. The confidence level of the fanboys is a bit hilarious and reaching, but I’m sure it will be fine. That doesn’t mean this photo isn’t bad, though. Mainly I have issue with Hathaway being tapped for the role. But context is everything, so obviously I’ll hold off any real judgment.

  31. guest Avatar

I really hope Hathaway will bring some emotional weight to her part and I think she might be gold for that. At least based on her performance in Rachel Getting Married. I think she really wears her emotions on her sleeve, lets hope Nolan uses that in a great way and not just makes her “cool”. But I do understand that the combination of casting Hathaway in Nolan’s male oriented films can worry even the most optimistic..

  32. Dana Jones Avatar
    Dana Jones

I agree, my main concern is Hathaway… not so much the picture or the glasses that looks part of the Spy Kids movies.

Nolan does have pretty consistent track record of picking plain and unanticipated women in his films (Cotillard is the exception), but still achieving a damn good performance. Here’s hoping.

Are we really going to argue whether or not Batman Returns is dated? The question is how campy and creepy it was. Batman 89 had everything down pretty pat, but then we got DeVito eating faces, and sexual innuendos.

I know the big google style glasses have been featured in recent comic designs of the character but I never really liked them there either, and aside from those she looks a bit too much like a normal woman wearing leather rather than the iconic character she is playing.

But at least it looks better and more true to the original material than the full Bane costume that leaked, and of course if the movie itself is good (which I certainly hope it will be, but in strange way I would feel a bit better if Inception had underwhelmed since it seems to me that Nolan is due for a disappointment) any costume issues will be forgotten fairly quickly.

Returns is the second best live action Batman after The Dark Knight. If the Batman and Catwoman storyline is even half as good in this movie as it was in that, then we’ll be okay

Anne Hathaway’s just so goofy. She’s sweet and has some nice range, but badass sexiness requires more than acting skill; it’s a physical presence and I just fear that she’s miscast. But what the hell, she could surprise us.

  38. Matthew Starr Avatar

That thing on her face look ridiculous. What helped Michelle was that costume that covered her entire head so all we saw was her eyes, nose and mouth.

Her hair in this image is a problem. She looks like Julie Newmar or Lee Meriwether here.

Kris: I think the “She’s not Michelle Pfieffer” comment is a little irrevevant. Her take on the character was pitch-perfect with Burton’s gothic take. This isn’t Burton’s Bat-verse, this is Nolan’s, and I imagine his Catwoman is going to be a little different.

Jesse: You must not have seen “Havoc”. Hathaway gives a “sexy” performance in that.

Oh, could you suck Burton little harder? I don’t think he could feel you.

His riffing on german expressionism is neither original or fun anymore. His horrible overuse of FX-work and lousy storytelling has made him among the biggest hacks working today. I guess you didnt see Alice, Apes, Charlie and the list goes on.

    Timeless? Not at all.

  44. Fitz Avatar

    @/3rtfu11

As guest mentioned reinterpreting German expressionism became a relic of the past. Nothing about Burton’s Batman is inherently his. More like Fritz Lang’s Batman.

“Burton’s visual style is timeless.” What a load of bullshit! Burton’s style is extremely dated. Even movies he makes today seem like they were made in the 90s or earlier. Burton is a horrible filmmaker. He’s a great cartoonist/animator, but he sucks as a filmmaker. Just because he has set designers and props people do some weird shit doesn’t mean he’s a great visual filmmaker; it just means he is weird and has some pretty idiosyncratic tastes when it comes to set dressing. That’s about it. He can dress a set weirdly. That’s all he can do. The guy’s a hack.
