REVIEW: “One Day” (***)

Posted by · 6:41 pm · August 19th, 2011

“I love you, Dexter, I just don’t like you anymore,” a radiantly moist-eyed Anne Hathaway tells a radiantly plastered Jim Sturgess at a crucial emotional juncture in “One Day,” Lone Scherfig’s attractive, involving and curiously unmoving attempt to replicate the cosy, literate-but-not-too-literary British comforts of her 2009 “An Education.” Cribbed by screenwriter David Nicholls from […]

First look at Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

Posted by · 3:03 am · August 5th, 2011

Or, to be more precise, as Selina Kyle, given that the “Dark Knight Rises” machine seems to be avoiding the “Catwoman” moniker. My considered verdict on this: she’s not Michelle Pfeiffer. But then, few people are. Beyond that, I have no opinion, though I’m sure many of you do. Have at it in the comments.

OFF THE CARPET: Sun came up

Posted by · 9:11 am · February 28th, 2011

Steven Spielberg couldn’t have put it more concisely during his presentation of the Best Picture category last night.  To paraphrase, he noted that whichever films did not happen to win Best Picture this year would join the ranks of numerous classics of the medium. Was it preemptive damage control?  I hope not.  Why be apologetic?  […]

Posted by · 9:13 am · February 22nd, 2011

Forgive me if this news, from the Hollywood Reporter, is a couple of days old — I’m still catching up on Oscar-related nuggets I missed while I was in Berlin. But I was so pleased by these details relating to Sunday’s telecast that I had to share them. I’m on the record as saying I […]

Hathaway set for Catwoman in ‘Dark Knight Rises,’ Hardy confirmed as Bane

Posted by · 10:24 am · January 19th, 2011

I feel compelled to pass this along in the midst of the usual Oscar talk because, well, you know me. I looks like Anne Hathaway has been confirmed for the role of Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan’s final Batman chapter, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Tom Hardy, meanwhile, who was cast in an unnamed […]

THE LONG SHOT: A new year wishlist

Posted by · 6:55 pm · December 30th, 2010

[Guy’s updated predictions here.] Okay, I won’t lie to you: I initially conceived this column in my head last week as a Christmas Eve wishlist, but then got too busy mulling wine and Christmas shopping in Dublin snowdrifts to actually write it. So a New Year’s Eve wishlist it is, then. Under either name, with […]
