As you can see from the previous post, Kris is every bit as punch-drunk on Nicolas Winding Refn’s electric throwback thriller “Drive” as I was at Cannes — read my review here — where it deservedly won the Best Director prize. It stands as my favourite narrative feature of the year so far; the rest of 2011 would have to be nothing short of miraculous to dislodge it from my year-end Top 10. Anyway, on the heels of last night’s Comic-Con screening comes a neatly assembled red-band trailer via IGN — and as sleek, smart and propulsive a taster as it is, it still can’t quite capture what a rush the film is. I’d almost recommend saving yourself for the full movie, but who am I kidding? Click on the image to watch it at IGN, or check out the embed after the cut.

It looks, at the very least, very fun.
It sure is. But it’s heavyweight cinema too.
I like this trailer better. It showcases more of the supporting characters.
tdr: Was there a previous trailer? This is the first official one, to my knowledge — unless you’re referring to that single clip that was released before Cannes.
Enough sites have encouraged me not to watch this trailer that I am going to hold off. It’s not a long wait for the release, so I can do it.
I’m hoping that Kris’s “prediction” of a nomination for Brooks in supporting comes true (assuming it’s deserving, of course).
I always felt like he got gypped for Broadcast News and I’d love to see him get his second chance. I’ve always been a big fan.
SJG: I hope so too, and not just because I made the prediction at Cannes. Bragging rights + deserving performance + great film + the prospect of Brooks tweeting through awards season = so much win.
I’ll still see this due to the hype that’s built since Canne, and the fact that it’s been a while since an actioner was aimed at grown-ups, but I found that trailer a little underwhelming.
@ Guy: I might be mistaking but wasn’t there some sort of teaser or another trailer? I might be confusing it with some clips from the movie that have been floating in the net.
Еither way I’m very excited for this movie.
It looks fantastic. I am a bit curious as to why this is the red-band trailer- I’m guessing it has to do with blood being too gruesome for the MPAA?
Anyway, I’m really looking forward to this film. This year is looking to be the year of Gosling.
Ryan Gosling is a very cool dude.
Guy,
I didn’t realize you had predicted it as well. I was just going off our side bar here. >
Glad to hear that there seems to be genuine buzz for it. I was thinking it was perhaps just a Kris-looking-for-things-to-predict-6-months-early sort of thing.
Can’t wait. Hopefully I can get my friend who is a car nut, and a fan of the dumb Fast and the Furious franchise.
Just finished the novel this week…..looks like a great adaption
that trailer got pretty sweet when the melodic music kicked in near the end and he’s kissing carey in the elevator before kicking that guys ass. something tastefully bad-ass about this movie
Every year there are about 3-4 movies that are totallyr eview-proof as far as going to see them. Last year, it was The Town, Shutter Island, The Fighter, and Black Swan. Drive makes that list this year, and the fact that Kris and Guy raved only makes me more excited.
The superb looking trailer for Soderberg’s Haywire is also out now.
Between this and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy I don’t know which I’ll like more.
Guy, do you only think Brooks will score with the Academy? I mean this looks pretty phenomenal. I could see Picture, Director, Screenplay, technical nods, and maybe Actor and Supporting Actress.
It is pretty phenomenal, but it’s also far too ice-cool to register with the Academy unless it becomes some kind of mega-hit, which I don’t really see happening. (The nomination for Brooks can happen on the strength of industry affection/respect for the star, and the novelty of seeing him in an against-type role — see Ben Kingsley in “Sexy Beast,” which I doubt a huge amount of voters saw or liked.)
Straight-up action cinema has never been the Academy’s bag. Bear in mind that the films to which “Drive” is a direct tribute — think early Michael Mann or prime Walter Hill — never crossed their radar either. (As for Supporting Actress, Mulligan really doesn’t merit consideration.)
Hendricks seems like she makes more impact as a Supporting Actress contender than Mulligan. (Although I’m not thinking she’ll make the 5 by any means.) Reasonable assumption to make though, nevertheless?
I am really excited for this–I mean, I always have been. But the trailer propelled that to another level. I could see some Oscar potential, provided the critical reviews are staggeringly positive and it gets some crix group wins and maybe Globe nods. I dunno, a lot has to play out first. But depending on how many BP slots are filled, a lone Director nod could accompany Brooks, perhaps. Regardless of what the Academy thinks though, what’s important is how much we enjoy it.

Sorry, no. Hendricks is scarcely in it.
That’s all right. Like I said, I wasn’t predicting, expecting, or hoping for it really, haha. Although it’s terrific seeing Hendricks in projects outside of Mad Men and I hope she garners more film work.
Thanks Guy. You’re totally right, but one can always hope right? Haha. I don’t know why but I get a strong sense of “Taxi Driver” from this movie. Great direction, strong male lead, great young actress. I know they are worlds apart from eachother, it just means I’m probably gonna love this movie.
