I’ll be updating Oscar shenanigans with some predictions and charts in a week and a half, and in them, you’ll see that of all the superhero movies this year, I’m counting on “Captain America: The First Avenger” to be the one that registers much at all with the Academy. We’ll see if that pans out, but for now, the final trailer has been released via Yahoo! Movies, and it has some impressive strokes. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

Looks like a mediocre 1940’s serial wannabe. Effects are shoddy (green-screened car ride? really?), dialogue corny, and the performances look average. I do see it garnering a makeup nom, though.
Reminds me of The Rocketeer.
Still don’t get why it didn’t get an earlier July release i.e. closer to Independence Day weekend. Kind of a no-brainer really.
I supposed alien robots are more patriotic.
Not really a no-brainer when Transformers is sitting perched on that weekend waiting to eat anyone’s lunch who dares to come close.
Actually, I guess you’re wondering why Paramount didn’t swap the dates. Forgive me.
But that would never have been in the cards, anyway. The studio has had too much success with Transformers on that weekend the last two times at bat.
Meeeeeehhhh. Looks mildly entertaining at most.
You think they’re going to try the “Heroes are made in America” tagline in the international marketing too? I (and I suspect many non-US viewers) could do without the jingoism.
I think this looks very entertaining for a summer comic book movie, I am looking forward to it for sure.
2 things:
That is some machine that besides turning Steve Rogers into Captain America, also cause his pants to dramatically increase in size along with him, very advanced…
I can’t believe they are using a Tool song in the trailer, I love Tool, but that is just so odd, but it works.
Come on, this looks awesome. To be fair, though, I recently watched The Rocketeer and found it to be a brilliant film, a pop-art ode to America and movie serials. Also Nazi pseudo-Errol Flynn Timothy Dalton. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR IN A SUPERHERO MOVIE?
Also I may have a man crush on Chris Evans.
This a bit offtopic but many years ago I though that Chris Evans would make a good Lupin III.
Another off-topic factoid:
As off this moment, Green Hornet has a higher rating on RT than Green Lantern.
Cars 2 has the same rating as Mars Needs Moms, yet it is Mars Needs Moms that will be remembered as the terrible animated movie of 2011, mostly by those who haven’t seen it.
Shark, not too mention a Nazi vs Mob shootout and a fight atop of a Zeppelin.
hey kris, you said in this thread http://incontention.com/2009/05/19/the-lists-top-10-action-sequences-of-all-time/ you were gonna make a best fight sequence list as well…is that still coming? id love to see it
Eh, I still think the origin story stuff will have my interest more than the superhero adventurey things.
Nominations though, it looks like its got the kind of showy art-direction and costume design that the academy goes for. And sound would seem like a gimme.
req: Nah, probably not. Something will have to stir the passion there. A fight in a film that’s outstanding or something.
I kinda liked it, but that “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn” dialogue nearly turned me off the film. Bad piece of writing.
I should rewatch The Rocketeer. One of my childhood favorites. Wonder how it holds up.
Cinematically this has the most potential of any superhero film this year and hopefully won’t feel like a derivative origin story like Green Lantern. No more trying to pander too much to the audiences, please studios.
Not avoiding their flaws…
Thor-seemed to embrace its other worldly aspects.
First Class-nicely done time period
Green Lantern-aww man this could have been like a fun space opera adventure.
“Heroes are made in America?” I think I just threw up in my mouth.
How did they make Evans tiny for the early scenes? CGI? ‘Cause if so, I think it’s pretty much a lock for a visual effects nom.
James,
I thought the time-period was horribly done in Xmen FC in some respects, particularly the hair-styles…just way, way off.
I love the look of this movie so far.
Hayley Atwell looks like a great fit for the reimagined Peggy.
Looks promising. But can it erase my memories of “Green Lantern?” I’ll pony up for the 3D version if that’s the case.
The ‘skinny’ Chris Evans looks authentic. I hope that’s the case when watching those scenes play out in full.
I just read that he got pretty skinny, but needed some CGI enhancement to get that thin. What these actors do to their bodies.
Kyle-Yea, agreed. I won’t say all the period touches were good. Sometimes its a little tacky, sometimes not at all. Glad they didn’t go too full blown with the period.
The “heroes are made in america” line made me laugh because of an article I read last week that pointed out that:
Batman-Welsh
Superman-English
Green Lantern-Canadian
Spider-Man-English
Thor-Austrailian
So..yeah. Kinda funny
If this came out on Thor’s release date, (a few days after Osamas death) it would have tripled its box office potential, easy.
Roy: Andrew Garfield was born in the United States to an American father.
