‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ red band trailer

Written by

in

UPDATE (5/31): Sony has pulled the trailer offline, just in time for the official green band version to drop (which it did, in what looks like a legit leak, but we’ll wait for Apple or whatever to deliver before passing it along).

I was going to refrain from posting the recently “leaked” trailer for David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but there is some talk out there that it might have been a controlled leak, a bit of a marketing stunt. (And after all, no moves have been made to take it down.) If so, I TOTALLY dig it. The material itself already seems to indicate Fincher is back to his grungy days, and maybe having more fun than ever. A little shaky in-theater recording of what will be cleaned up a bit for Thursday’s official green band trailer launch adds to the flavor. So, check out it out via YouTube by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump (and delight in the best piece of marketing since the Coens’ “A Serious Man”).

Stunning…my anticipation for this has officially jumped sky high. Honestly the best trailer I’ve probably seen since Black Swan. This being an Oscar site, shall we start guessing? Even though Fincher’s genre pics typically haven’t faired well with the Academy, I’m guessing after last year and with a picture this high profile that ‘Girl’ is definitely on the Academy’s radar.

    Likely…
    Picture
    Writing (Adapted)
    Cinematography
    Editing
    Sound Mixing

    Maybe…
    Director
    Actress
    Actor/Supp. Actor
    Music (Original Score)

What do you think Kris? Is this out of the Academy’s comfort zone?

I don’t know if a brief sideways glimpse of a breast justifies having a red band trailer (or Restricted rating). I mean of course it does, if the point is to have a red band trailer but it all seems rather obvious.

Still, the footage looks good (in the Let Reight One/Me In kind of way) and totally gains from having that shaky-cam shot in a theater look. I am not orgasming from it though and wouldn’t call it the best piece of marketing since anything, especially since. The. End. Titles. Flashing. Is. Annoying.

And not in the “it’s gonna be fine” kind of way, either.

Oh and one more thing, there’s finally been some movement on George Lucas produced ‘Red Tails’ in the past week. There’s even been some talk that the movie is actually going to be ready and in theater’s by year’s end.

I wonder if anyone out there thinks it might be a contender.

Fantastically executed teaser, but weirdly, I am now more convinced than before that it is going to be just as terrible as the original Swedish film.

Fincher has way too much style to make a film as bland as the Swedish film.

One probably more so then the other. I’m willing to believe that ‘Let Me In’ was influenced by Fincher. At the same time, “Let the Right One In” is a harsher version of what a lot of Sweedish cinema looked like for a long time. Hard to say where it all started. You might even be right.

I even find certain similarities between LTROI’s look and, say, Eastwood’s current DP Tom Stern. I can think of a lof names but I’d be way off. Besides, Stern might have been influenced by Fincher’s films and work of Kaminski.

You can’t show blood in a green band trailer so it’s not just about the boobs, Maxim.

  9. James D. Avatar

Fincher alternates between good and bad movies (Social Network good, Benjamin Button bad, Zodiac good, Panic Room bad, etc.) This looks like it will fit its place.

I can’t believe it took till Chad for someone to point out the obvious violence that surely had more to do with the mature trailer rating than the breast.

Unfortunately I always think Fincher movie trailers are amazing and then I think the movies themselves suck, so I’m not holding my breath for this… but the trailer is great.

Although I did love The Social Network so I’m hoping Fincher can turn out something else that’s actually good.

I’m obsessed with the song, I can’t stop listening to it. Getting Trent to score his films was genius…the NIN vibe fits so well with this dark, cold Swedish mood especially.

You really dissapoint me, Chad. It’s *always* about the boobs. Remember that ;) . Or in this case, the boob.

Can’t believe people don’t like The Game or Benjamin Button. The only Fincher films I thought were mediocre or less were Panic Room and Alien 3.

I, for one, am quite excited about this trailer and for the movie in general. It may be completely unnecessary, but it does look like it will be a lot of fun at the very least. And at the end of the year with all the “Oscar films” coming out at once, some that are more admirable than enjoyable, this film looks like it could succeed at being somewhat in between both. Great music in the trailer too.

I think Social Network showed us that Fincher could also be a great formalist. I would rather he keep trying in the genre of dramas until humanity cannot help but seep through the frames of his film and enliven his movies with a beating heart.

Though this looks like a very good exercise for him and talented as Fincher is, his film is sure to be interesting plainly on a film-making level, if not more.

However, the imagery is very similar to the Swedish version, so much so that I could re-edit this trailer with some of the Swedish footage swiped in and the audience would be no wiser.

I really want to see how much of a ‘feel bad movie’ this one is in Christmas. I’m taking this trailer’s words as a promise, I want this movie to left me asking ‘why do I bother celebrating…’. Those big, cracked words can’t be for nothing!

So yeah… I’m eager to have a massive downer as my Christmas gift. Especially since it means having Fincher back in his grittier element.

The tangline is glib and a slick marketing tool. Supposed to be ‘edgy’, ‘hip’ & ‘cool’. Don’t take it seriously. This is not a von Trier feature to be the downer of the year.

    Yeah, Marshall, the trailer:

    Also, The Game kicks ass.

I can’t help but interject, but I can barely think of a David Fincher film I wasn’t satisfied with, other than “Alien 3” of course. The closest I can think of is “Fight Club”, which is great the first time through, and maintains a sense of quality, but it becomes weaker and weaker each time I see it.

As for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, it looks like the gritty old-school Fincher material, but with the added experience Fincher has acquired through “Zodiac”, “Benjamin Button”, and “The Social Network”. Really looking forward to it.

Just watch the original. Why remake a flawless film? oh wait, so you won’t have to read subtitles and of course, Hollywood greed.

  29. Fitz Avatar

There wasn’t anything flawless about the original. Rapace did what was asked of her, no more and the supporting cast could have been carved out of a coffee table.

Trent Reznor. If it weren’t for him, Social Network would have been a snooze fest. I’m sure the same applies here. Thank God for Trent Reznor. The man knows how to make great music.

Those girl with the dragon tattoo flicks look like they were made for T.V. Fincher’s will definitely be an improvement. The tension and danger is palpable in this teaser. Looks to be good. Although, Reznor’s music takes it up a notch.

    Red Wine:

Von Trier had a similar thing going on with Melancholia, saying that “there’ll be no more happy endings”. Until I get to see it, I can’t say how that tagline holds up, but as of now I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt, likewise with ‘Dragon Tattoo’.

Yeah, I’m playing the hype game, but it’s rather unavoidable with with such confrontational, overconfident taglines anyways. And these directors.

“There wasn’t anything flawless about the original. Rapace did what was asked of her, no more and the supporting cast could have been carved out of a coffee table.”

Really? did what was asked of her, no more? and what was that? excellence? yeah, she definitely delivered excellence. The arrogance and bias of English-speaking cinema never fails to shock me. If it wasn’t made by your precious Fincher or Nolan then it is not worth a penny. Pathetically laughable.

  37. Fitz Avatar

Foreign language films are good, even great, but TGWTDT is not one of those cases.

There is no need to bring xenophobia into it.

  38. James D. Avatar

Afrika, it has nothing to do with language. There were a lot of great foreign language films last year (I Am Love, Dogtooth, Alamar, Everyone Else, and White Material, to name a few). The Girl trilogy was a chore to sit through.

  39. Andrej Avatar

    “The arrogance and bias”.

You should probably take a look at your own comments before coloring us as arrogant and biased. If we’re not talking about the original movie, … guess why, it’s because this is not it. This is another movie by another guy, and until you get to see it, save your unwanted, unqualified preachings.

How did we get from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to the entire trilogy? *scratches head* continue to prove my point. Of course it was a chore to sit through. It’s a chore when everyone else does it but when precious Fincher and Scorsese and Nolan grab that lens, everything is absolutely perfect. *rolls eyes*

You guys can continue to jerk Fincher off. I’m done. Have a nice day everyone. Cheers!

People still use “mentally disabled” as a dis? Geez it’s hard to believe it’s 2011 sometimes.

TGWTDT is a TV programme that was rushed into cinemas. And that fact is painful throughout a fairly dull film I thought.

I’m no great fan of Fincher, but have to believe that he’ll improve greatly on the style, or lack of, in the original.

As far as I’m concerned, the only bad film on Fincher’s resume is, well, none. “Alien 3” isn’t good, which isn’t really Fincher’s fault, and more studio interference than anything else, but he took that off his resume.

“The Game” and “Panic Room” are lesser films when compared to his others, but on their own terms, they are both excellent genre films substantially lifted by Fincher’s direction.

Redband trailers can be shown in front of “R” rated movies in theaters since theoretically the audience should be of age.

This most likely played in front of some Hangover2 showings.

It doesn’t happen often but I have seen a few in theaters.
