New ‘Green Lantern’ trailer

Written by

Summer movie season is just heating up. We’ve already seen “Thor” delight and annoy with equal measure. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” stinks up cinemas this weekend. I’m beginning to get nervous about “X-Men: First Class,” right around the corner, but mainly I’m holding out hope for “Green Lantern,” which could go either way at this point. Yahoo! Movies has debuted a trailer that got a lot of people excited. I’m trying to keep my hopes in check. Give it a look by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

A bit of unease regarding “X-Men: First Class” is understandable, but it still looks pretty great. “Green Lantern”, on the other hand, doesn’t look the slightest bit redeemable. At least that’s my take on every bit of material I’ve seen from it. It might be like the “Avatar” situation, when I couldn’t understand what everyone else saw in it. However, it feels a lot more like “Fantastic Four”.

My opinion towards this remains unchanged by that trailer. This looks like the worst movie of the summer.

Duncan: Holding screenings until the week of and some sudden junket changes (not to mention I hear most of the film was re-shot) has me wondering.

Great trailers also make me nervous, for some reason. Always have.

Ever since comic book movies became a thing I’ve been waiting for a Green Lantern movie. Hopefully it won’t disappoint, though the CGI excess has me a bit concerned.

Adrej that’s the only way you can make this movie.

I saw this trailer in 3d in front of Pirates, and the footage looked pretty good. I liked they used the exposition to educate people in the trailer rather than the movie

    @Kris

They held a screening of First Class today. Robbie Collins tweeted about it, calling it “fun, multi-layered, and sometimes moving.” Also, the shooting schedule was pretty short so there’s no chance they re-shot most of the film. Not sure where you’re getting your information, but please don’t be one of those “believe every rumor you hear” bloggers. Leave that to IMDB.

I’m not sure why Green Lantern is getting so much bad buzz. This is the best trailer yet, and while movie quality isn’t always correlated with trailer quality (See: Avatar: The Last Airbender), this one has good talent on it. At worst, I can see it being “okay.”

“there’s no chance they re-shot most of the film”

Not what I hear. And it’s from an informed source. Apparently Bryan Singer was heavily involved.

I hope it’s good. Just saying I’m getting a queasy feeling, based on these kinds of things. Take it with a grain if you like.

I don’t think you realize how short the production schedule was. Perhaps there were reshoots, but not “most of the film.” That’s a massive undertaking.

I’ve learned to take “reshoot” news with a grain, because they’re often times BS from “informed sources.”

I hope First Class is good, and to be fair Fox has held late screenings even with movies that got good reviews (Simpsons, Avatar, Unbreakable etc.) and I remember a similar situation with the first X-Men movie that the film was being tweaked up to the last minute and many were nervous. I agree that the trailer is one of the best of the summer, but I always take trailers (both good and bad) with a grain of salt. And I was more excited about Vaughn when he was hired for The Last Stand coming off of Layer Cake (a movie that I really liked), because while I know Kick-Ass has its fans it is on my bottom five of last year.

As for Green Lantern it could go either way also, and it would be such a shame if both that and First Class were to underwhelm. To be honest I’ve liked what I’ve seen from GL but there have been some rumors that the film was in trouble.

tony: I heard six weeks of reshoots. And I’m not one to gallivant with pointless rumors.

After TOL settles, it’s all about Super 8.

This looks like it may suffer from the same problem that “Thor” experienced (i.e. it feels like two different movies meshed into one). I’m not holding my breath for this one…I’ll admit that the Green Lantern was never my favorite superhero, but the trailers just don’t do anything for me…I could see this easily being one of the worst of the summer. Which is a shame, because I actually kinda like Campbell as a director (well, at least when he’s directing a Bond movie).

This is some of the most distractingly cruddy looking CGI I’ve seen in a big-buget movie, not to mention the fact that it seems to be covering every inch of the frame. Only summer movies that look even slightly appealing to me are “Super 8” and “Cowboys & Aliens”.

I would say “First Class” has a chance to be good, but I don’t even like the X-men movies that other people do like. And in regards to Vaughn directing, there’s something weird to me about a director who’s fresh off of a lower-budget superhero sendup doing a big-budget legitimate superhero movie, but that’s just me.
