Tell us what you thought of ‘Bridesmaids’

Written by

The summer movie season keeps moving along this weekend with the release of Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids,” looking to cash in on a little of that left over “Hangover” love before that film’s sequel comes along and devours what’s left in a few weeks. Honestly, though, by most accounts, this one’s a winner (I haven’t seen it). If you get around to it this weekend, feel free to speak up on your thoughts.

The most fun I’ve had at a comedy for a while. Chris O’Dowd and Melissa McCarthy are a blast. But even they can’t upstage the bedroom scenes between Wiig and Hamm.

I think it wasn’t well advertised. The marketing reeked of desperation, begging men to give it a chance.

Thankfully, the film had more confidence in itself and was about as funny and honest as you can get with a big studio comedy.

Funny as fuck. Was totally expecting it to be crap (even with the great reviews), but it’s the funniest summer R-rated comedy I’ve seen in at least a few years.

I thought it was hilarious. I do, however, like Kristen Wiig’s humor and since she was a writer, I was probably going to like it. Hope it does well. The actresses (and actors) were all pretty talented.

The scene on the airplane is probably the funniest scene I’ve seen in a movie in three or four years.

As a whole, the movie is a winner. I hope it succeeds.

I was happy every time Chris O’Dowd was on screen, but otherwise it wasn’t what I would call enjoyable. And though I have a soft spot for smart-dumb Hollywood comedies (“Soapdish,” “Zoolander”), I wasn’t much amused by the humor. I laughed uncontrolably at Kristen Wiig during her brief scenes in “Knocked Up” and that Ricky Gervais film, but here–not so much.

I really enjoyed “Bridesmaids”. It was advertised in a similar fashion to “The Hangover”, but this story has much more heart, and there are some terrific performances from Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy.

The scene in which the women are getting fitted for dresses is the funniest movie moment that I’ve come across in a long time.

I’d been waiting for Paul Feig to break out as a film director for a little while; he’s directed some of the best episodes of Arrested Development and The Office. We’ve already seen Greg Mottola and Nicholas Stoller make the transition, so I figured he was next.

I really enjoyed it. I expected Wiig to shine, and she does; but the real standout for me was Rose Byrne as the uber-bitch you love to hate.

I thought it was a really smart comedy, but is advertised in such the wrong way. It’s shown as kind of the chicks answer to “The Hangover”, and while this does have the appeal more to girls, it’s still a really funny comedy. I thought the whole food poisoning scene was completely unnecessary however. It’s gross out moments really didn’t fit at all with the tone of the rest of the movie, and kind of brought it down a notch for me.

wow, look at the raves in here, from normally hard to please audience. i need to check this out, but from the few scenes i have seen it did make me laugh.

Although I chuckled at times, how can it be that Kristen Wiig left me cold after walking out of this picture? I’m a big fan of her SNL work, and she certainly has some scenes in “Bridesmaids” that utilize her sketch talents. But there’s an overall coldness and aloofness, i.e., lack of humanity, to her portrayal that was offputting. Rudolph, Byrne, and McCarthy, in particular, are very watchable and create real characters.

$25 million is pretty good for this movie no? I read Nikki Finke said she would quit Hollywood reporting if it made over 15.

Is it a bad sign that this film managed to make me gasp for breath more than any studio horror film in the past three years? I’m usually not a fan of wedding oriented films, and when “Bridesmaids” finally reached the end with the wedding, that sort of dread did settle in. For the most part, I found it to be a hilarious, emotional, and realistic character study from an unexpected source. Kristen Wiig was great as an actress and a writer, and the arc for her character mostly avoided the average wed-com cliches. It didn’t iron over the unsavory parts of any particular character. It was surprisingly true to how people actually act.

Godfather, I was wondering the same thing. (re: Wiigs performance).

I really enjoyed the film, and she’s a GREAT physical comedian, but like you said, the humanity doesn’t come through as much as it should.

My husband & I loved it, saw it Friday in a full house. Went back Saturday night because I and/or people were laughing so hard I missed some lines; plus the dialogue, sight & physical gags were coming fast & furious. The audience’s laughter flowed in waves.

The highlights for the crowds in my viewings were the bridal salon and plane scenes. As for heart, I can only point to Annie and Lillian’s relationship, the sadness at life’s inevitable changes, everything wrong in Annie’s life, the relationships among the women, even with ultimate frenemy Helen, the push/pull between Annie and her cop.

And all of these were a lot more realistic than most studio movies – they don’t have great wardrobes (except Helen) and apartments; Annie has wrinkles around her eyes; her mom, the late, great Jill Clayburgh, looks like a mom her age – not the Jane Fonda we saw @ Cannes (props to Jane, notwithstanding); Maya is no Halle, Angelina, Jennifer, or J.Lo; Lillian’s husband looks like someone on the street; and Meghan/Melissa looks lithe majority of American women look.

Heart? That scene between Lillian and Annie on the bus after the plane fiasco was an extremely difficult one for both of them, and Wiig/Rudolph played it perfectly. I don’t know if those situations happen with men or if they do, men just “man up” and don’t let it hurt – but for most women, it’s very painful. The audience is silent during that scene, because of the shift in tone coming just after the high of the plane hijinks. I actually heard a few sniffles.

So, heart and humanity? Bridesmaids had plenty of heart and humanity for me – AND laughs. Hangover was funny, and I loved it, but I laughed even more in Bridesmaids and loved it even more.

Very funny, although I could’ve done without the excessive toilet humour of Melissa McCarthy. Wiig, Rudolf and Byrne are fabulous and I actually leaned over to my friend and say “I want to marry [chris o’dowd]”. Sigh.

I do wish they hadn’t outright stolen scenes from both “Will & Grace” *and* “Seinfeld”, but for all I know those shows got them from somewhere else, too.

I appreciate Kristin Wiig on SNL and some of her film work ( especially in ‘ Adventureland ‘ & ‘ Knocked Up ‘ ) , but she has no charisma. I don’t think she has the ability to shine in a leading role- she is more of sidekick to the protagonist of a movie.

What derailed some of this film was : her lack of charm , their was some very dull scenes that went too long, and the cheesy Wilson Phillips song-and-dance number was painful on every level. After seeing ‘ Bridesmaids ‘, I respect ‘ The Hangover ‘ & ‘ Knocked – Up ‘ even more because of their high energy , perfect balance of comedy and drama, and the re- watchability factor – not an easy feat . I liked ‘ Bridemaids, but I didn’t love it.

    Really enjoyed this.

Honestly, some of the “humor” was hit & miss. But when it HIT, it hit so hard that it didn’t even matter (to me) during the not-so-intentionally-funny patches. I haven’t laughed this hard in a lonnnnnng time. And I really enjoyed the Wiig/O’Dowd storyline. Very natural.

Wiig – funny; good first leading role, here. Rose Byrne – always surprises me how great she actually is. Melissa McCarthy – who knew? SO funny. My favorite segments include the Maid of Honor(s) speech, the entire plane sequence, and the Bridal shower.

Crowd report: near-full house. Tons of laughter. Huge buzz leaving the theater. I expect a great week, and a solid hold next weekend (Pirates or not).

Perfect? No. A bit long, some jokes fell flat, peaked a little early (?). But again, I haven’t laughed so hard in a while. I actually … can’t remember the last movie that I laughed this hard at.

I actually liked it more when it was investigating the sadness of Wiig’s life. That shot of her pay cheque was something I could identify with so much.

I really liked ^ the investigation of sadness in Wiig’s life.

And I also loved the humor (when it was uproarious and not trying too hard).

Some of the more negative reviews I’ve read say that it jumps around too much, tonally.

I can see that. But it did not impede my enjoyment of the overall, or appreciating it’s separate components (riotous humor, sadness, friendship, relationship, etc.).

I’ve never laughed so much during a movie in my life. It seemed like the whole audience was loving every minute of it. My friend and I both were texting people on the way home, telling them to go see it.

Duncan and Ligaya, I think you are looking WAY too into it. The whole story line and the way the characters end up are really cliche arcs, but, what makes up for it all, is the hilarity that leaps off the screen during damn near EVERY SCENE!!!!
