83rd Academy Awards open thread

Alright, I’m ducking out of here for the night.  Feel free to use this space to discuss the show, the winners, whatever strikes you.  The red carpet starts up in about two hours.  I don’t think there will be too much strain on the server, but if things get sluggish, have patience with us.

If you’re looking for a live stream of the Oscarcast, I’m told you can watch here and, of course, Oscar.com (if you don’t mind paying five bucks).  I imagine Justin.tv will have a page, too.  You can check the rundown of awards presentations here.

Once again, if you haven’t joined our pool at Picktainment, do so here.  Meanwhile, my final predictions are here, Guy’s are here and Gerard’s are here.  The aggregated picks of others can be found at Awards Daily, Gold Derby and Movie City News.

And…that should about cover it.  Enjoy the show, be safe, have fun, all of that good stuff.  The checkered flag is in sight.  Check back tomorrow for the season’s final Oscar Talk as Anne and I pick up the pieces and try to figure out what happened.

    Paul,

no need to disrespect TKS while supporting C. Nolan!

I think The Turning Point had 11 nominations and won none. It’s a good movie–worth seeing for Shirley McLaine and Anne Bancroft. Also, the ballet is great with Baryshnokov.

Yeah, in this case, they really loved ‘Kings Speech’ and Seidler is the heart of the movie.

Damn Danes. We need to invade Hans Island immediately.

    4 for 8.

    Denmark. Expected.

Brand trying to be funny. Godd luck with that.

Oscars should not be given on sentiment, but quality. Nolan had the better screenplay. He won more critics awards than Seidler. But the Weinstein Aura unfortunately contaminated the writers branch.

Fellini and Bergman used to win the Foreign Language Oscar. Now it is four years running where a film with no real presence before the Oscars wins. When is the last time anyone took The Counterfeiters or Departures seriously? Dogtooth was robbed.

Anne Hathaway is as wooden as James Franco is high

    Christian Bale!!! No surprise there!

    Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Batman!

    5 for 9.

    Batman won the Oscar!

PaulH : It’s not just the writer’s branch. The Weinstein aura has contaminated the Academy for almost 15 years.

    Yikes, Reese Witherspoon looked amazing.

Sucks than Bale didn’t do the speech in his Batman voice.

“Oscars should not be given on sentiment, but quality. Nolan had the better screenplay. He won more critics awards than Seidler. But the Weinstein Aura unfortunately contaminated the writers branch.”

Oh, c’mon. These kinds of things are inherently subjective. Many people prefer Seidler’s screenplay.

What the fuck is with the ABC announcement? Don’t these people know this show is aired all over the world? It’s completely irrelevant to the majority of us (and probably to those in the U.S. too).

Oh, and stop being such sour apples. Nolan has a looong career ahead of him, he’ll surely have more chances to win one.. And let’s not forget all the amazing filmmakers that never won. He’d be in just as good company if he never did, and none the lesser for it.

Is it possible that James Franco is high???

At least Anne Hathaway is trying!

I’m surprised the Academy went for TSN’s score.

Score time. Trent Reznor, f*ck yeah!

  25. James D. Avatar

The Social Network score was so damn good. It is probably the only time tonight where the winner will be my favorite of the year. Good for them.

Not if he keeps getting out and out excluded in director and not being treated with basic respect in his writing, he’s not. Seidler won on a sympathy vote, and little else. His script was Oscar Bait 101.

I was deep down rooting for Powell, but I’m mostly glad to see The Social Network’s fine score get the award.

It also brought my grand total of correct victories up to a whopping four. Yikes. I’ve never done this bad…

As of now Inception’s the top winner. Let’s enjoy this moment while it lasts *o*

The only way all these techs are able to go to inception is wholly because of Chris nolan. The academy made a huge mistake not nominating him.

While I appreciate the Inception winners sentiments in name dropping Smith and Nolan, gotta be a little uncomfortable for those guys.

  39. Marv Avatar

Wow! “Inception” is racking up the tech awards. Three already I believe? To all those passinate “Inception” fans; an Oscar is an Oscar right? Be it for Best Picture or Sound Mixing.

And a sci-fi film will get the usual suspects; sound, cinematography, visual effects. In other news, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Brick ceiling remains. Sci-fi films will always wind up where Zuckerberg had to stay in TSN; the bike room.

So now we’ve arrived at a point where The King’s Speech will have to perform some (slight) upset wins a la Film Editing/Director if it is to reach that magic four win total that most Best Pictures reach. Or could it end up with just Screenplay, Actor and Picture?
