Which film or performance in your opinion doesn’t deserve to be nominated?

Although it is still a two-horse race, did any BP nominees get a bump from the nominations?

Does Dogtooth have a prayer of winning?

More importantly why does the Academy insist on nominating a film they love in every single and undeserved category? (King’s Speech in cinematography and sound mixing, not to mention editing).

I feel like they are those voters who go to the polls and vote their party down the line without knowing ANYTHING about who is running for what.

Would less than expected number of nominations hurt Natalie Portman’s chance against Annete Benning?

Would True Grit having 10 nominations mean possible upset by Hailee Steinfeld in BSA category?

Is this the year we will see different movies win Best Picture and Best Director?

I’m happy about it, but I wonder if you have some insight into the surprisingly strong showing for 127 Hours. Maybe Boyle is in the club a lot stronger then we all thought.

Can you guys give us a primer (for those of us who don’t know much) as to how the nominees are perceived in the industry? Are there any well-liked Ron Howard types in the field this year?

  7. Andrej Avatar

We all know that the worst snubs are Chris Nolan, Ryan Gosling, Lee Smith, Andrew Garfield, Burlesque songs, etc…

But what about… the best snubs? Are you happy for a particular omission?

I have to agree with Matthew Starr. The King’s Speech for Sound Mixing? Give me a break. We’ve heard rumors before of Academy members getting their maids to fill out their ballots. Do you think the across-the-board nominations of films such as The King’s Speech and The Social Network validate such rumors?

Does Sony Pictures have a praying chance to beat the Weinstein Machine? (Sony Pics did well this year.)

Everyone’s talking about “The King’s Speech” as the new frontrunner based on the nominations. I still think “The Social Network” is the one to beat. But “True Grit” got some serious love this morning in pretty much all of the categories it needed to (as did “The Fighter,” but there’s more buzz on the performances than the movie as a whole). The one that stands out is the Coens getting in for directing…many think it’s because “Inception” wasn’t as strongly received as we had thought, but could we be looking at this the other way around?…could “True Grit” have just been a monstrous hit with the Academy, such that we have a legitimate dark horse in the Best Picture race?

Is Best Supporting Actress a two-horse race (Leo Vs. Steinfeld), a three-horse race (Leo Vs. Steinfeld Vs. Adams), or a four-horse race (Leo Vs. Steinfeld Vs. Adams Vs. Weaver)? Will the SAG winner be the eventual Oscar winner? Who do you think will win?

Do you think the absence of Andrew Garfield from Best Supporting Actor is indicative of any softness of support for TSN from the actors branch?

I’m happy to see Blue Valentine get any love at all but it definitely feels strange to see Michelle Williams without Ryan Gosling. Do you think the actors gave her more number one votes because people sided or identified more with her character?

Are The Social Network’s chances for Best Picture officially dead? Don’t those nominations for Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing mean something? Those two nominations were not sure things, which makes me wonder if the Academy liked The Social Network more than most are thinking…

I’ll repeat what I said in another thread: What is Anne’s take on David O. Russell’s “impossible” nomination and, in retrospect, does she think his reputation was even a factor in this race?

NOW does Helena Bonham Carter have a chance at riding The King’s Speech’s coattails for a win?

What the hell does Nolan have to do for these people? Is he still in the David Fincher Fight Club/Se7en or Spielberg/Jaws phase of his career? Because I most certainly do not want him to win for a bland Holocaust movie or biopic in 15 years, even though I know he’d make it awesome.

  20. John Gilpatrick Avatar

Here’s a question: Why do people get so worked up about one or two snubs when they’re probably pleased with the majority of the nominees? Twitter has just been a bitching and moaning fest for nearly four hours now…

  21. Loyal Avatar

Of the 24 films who scored 12 or more nominations, 15 won best picture. Of those 15, 12 also won Best Director. Shakespeare in Love (98), Gladiator (00), and Chicago (02) all lost Best Director.

Are we looking at a split this year?

Obvious question I suppose, but I’m curious.

Best of luck today. I imagine it has to be a very busy and stressful for morning for you and Anne.

Kind of a strange question, but I’m starting to plan my Oscar party, and I was wondering if either of you know how to make the truffle-based dish that Mark Ruffalo makes in “The Kids Are All Right.” It looks delicious and I think it would be a nice counter-point to my Winter’s Bone-less chicken and Inception layer cake.

What is Christopher Nolan’s reputation among the Hollywood elite? No one can tell me The Fighter is a better directed or edited film then Inception.
On the positive side, I am happy to see John Hawkes, Amy Adams(I prefer to Melissa Leo), and Banksy get a little love.

Will Academy voters recoil at the recent discussions about Steinfeld’s lead performance and NOT give her the supporting Oscar as you predict?

Why does it seem easier for an actress to get nominated for a well-loved critical film (Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine, Kate Winslet for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) than her male counterpart in the same film? Even when the competition for slots in actress is stronger than in actor, this seems to be the case.

Is there any backlash on Christopher Nolan from all the success he’s had the last couple years? This reminds me of when JAWS received a nomination for best picture, but none for acting or directing.

OK. TKS cannot possibly win the SAG, can it? In what universe is that acceptable?

  41. Manuel L. Avatar

Given The King’s Speech’s domination this morning and with the PGA, could it be that the Best Director category is actually tighter than Best Picture now and that Fincher isn’t safe at all? I guess the DGA will be a clear indication, but I wonder…

Now that Exit through the gift shop is in…does it have any chance at winning? I don’t remember how that category works, whether it’s full membership voting or if they have to screen all 5 films, but won’t that get the biggest boost from members who wouldnt vote on the nominees, since that is (at least in my, I know yours, and many other critics opinions), the most straight up entertaining documentary of the year?

Melissa Leo would be a really random supporting actress winner. Oscar likes its beautiful women in that category, not hags (Mo’Nique being the exception from the last ten years unless you count hillbetty Zellweger from Cold Mountain). Does she really have any chance? I say no and agree with Steinfeld, but would love to hear you discuss the category on the air.

As for Foreign Film, someone else said it, but what’s your pick? Is Incendies too crazy for the conservative voters of that category? It sounds amazing and not so out there as Dogtooth.

Please take a moment to explain why The King’s Speech’s nomination for Best Sound Mixing was NOT a surprise, given the subject of the movie and the fact that we were looking at ten+ nods in the bag. Sheesh.

Inception would likely have been the 6th film of 10; hence missing Top 5 (as did The Dark Knight).

Inception has 8 noms, but no directing, acting, editing(!). The Big 4 have directing, acting, & writign. True Grit has 10 noms plus directing, acting, & writing.

Can you discuss reasons WHY you really think Nolan is liked but not loved by the academy (at least by directors). The DGA goes for him consistently, and the Academy doesn’t.
