Nominations live stream and reactions thread

Written by

Alright folks, AMPAS president Tom Sherak and actress Mo’Nique will be announcing the major category nominations in, oh, 20 minutes or so.  The full list will be available at Oscar.com immediately after (though sometimes during) that announcement.

I’ll leave this space for your instant reactions and will post up my own extended thoughts shortly thereafter.  Anne and I will be doing a four-way Oscar Talk with Peter Knegt and Guy Lodge later this morning, and Guy will circle back later in the afternoon with his extended thoughts on the announcement.  But, for now, here’s your playground.  Check out a live stream of the announcement (which begins at 5:30am PT, 8:30 am PT) after the jump.  More to come shortly.

Waiting for Superman for doc snubbed.

Nolan has three DGA noms and has so far been nominated by every single award.. And when the oscars comes they screw him again.

Ten nominations for “True Grit,” but only one for “The Town?” For shame.

No Andrew Garfield, Lesley Manville, or Ryan Gosling.

Screw you, AMPAS. You f/cked up.

I suddenly have a strong gut instinct that SOCIAL NETWORK isn’t going to take Best Picture afterall

Looks like we have quite a few 14/15 on yesterday’s contest.

I got Original Score right but missed Best Actress.

Wow, I’m so glad Michelle Williams got in, and I was kind of scared for Kidman, but she’s in, so yeah! She’s officially back!
Big snub for Diane Warren and ”You haven’t seen the last of me”. But I’m satisfied with Dido/If I Rise.

    And INCENDIES, go!

No Nolan in Director = fail

Williams over Gosling (though really, over Moore) = fail

Renner over Garfield = fail, and yawn

No Black Swan in Screenplay, Art Direction or Supporting Actress = fail

The King’s Speech leads the nods = fail

Kidman and Hawkes = hey, they actually got something right

Ten nominees for BP = fail, look at your Director category and there are your five

Academy’s consistent middle-of-the-road picks and inability to change = fail

The Nolan snub to me is just unforgivable, even though probably won’t win this year, I was looking for him to at least get in.

I don’t know if anybody expected it, but I love that ‘I Am Love’ got in for costume design. Looking at the poster months ago, I thought that if it was to be nominated for anything, it’d be for that category.

I’m surprised at ‘Waiting for Superman’ not getting the docu cut. Really surprised.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP and THE ILLUSIONIST get nominated! Woo HOO!!!

  17. Joseph Avatar

Surprises: No TRON or Scott Pilgrim in Visual Effects.

The Town not in best picture (yay!)

Javier Bardem in lead (surprised Duvall didn’t get in)

Christopher Nolan not in directing (yay!)

Was kind of expecting Tangled to be nominated in animated feature, but oh well.

FLASH: The five Director nominees DO NOT depict the Best Picture nominees. “Toy Story 3” would have been in the five.

Also, “Barney’s Version” isn’t credited on the Oscar site for Makeup, but it’s in. You’ll see its makeup nominee’s name (Adrien Morot) floating in netherspace there randomly.

Hey, TKS got 12!!! But TSN got 8, it’s very well liked.

SO friggin’ happy for I Am Love and The Way Back popping up. The Way Back deserves the win in Make-Up.

    6 noms for 127!

-Winter’s Bone with the Best Pic nom!

    Surprises of the day:

No Waiting for Superman in Best Doc. (Banksy FTW!)

No TRON Legacy in Visual Effects (Hereafter, what a tsunami surprise!)

No Inception in editing. Say what?

Well, the real race has begun.

Nor even editing nomination for Inception makes this nomination a bittersweet thing.
    EXCITED FOR:
    1. How to train your dragon – Best Score
    2. Dogtooth – Best Foreign (wow!! AWESOME)
    3. Michelle Williams and Javier Bardem Surprise
    4. Wall-e is still the most nominated animated movie of history.
    5. Jeremy Renner for The Town
    6. The Grufalo
    7. And of course, my favourites TSN and TKS, getting a lot of love.

    DEPRESSED FOR:
    1. Nolan not getting BD
    2. No Editing for Inception (How could they??!!)
    3. No Andrew Garfield
    4. Black Swan, just 5? That’s not cool at all
    5. Tron didn’t get Visual Effects!

    SAD FOR
    1. Animal Kingdom could not compete on other nominations, except Suporting Actress??
    2. No Catfish
    3. Another Year, just 1 nomination.

    SURPRISED FOR
    1. True Grit getting 10 nominations. That’s impressive.
    2. Hawkes for Winter’s Bone
    3. Winter’s Bone at BP

    That’s for now.
Thanks for this year of coverage! :D
    May the best wins!

Here you have, the so called “insular” and so “old fashionated” music branch. Rahman and newbie Trent Reznor nominated. Also Zimmer’s new sound is nominated. Diane “Legend” Warren OUT. Danny Elfman OUT.

Can we really move on on the “insular and conservative branch” and realize this branch HAS CHANGED in the last few years?? Thank you.

There’s always stuff to bitch about but I think these are surprisingly awesome if you go in with low enough expectations. To wit:

No Best Picture nominee for The Town, a best foreign language nomination for Dogtooth, Baksy getting nominated over Davis Guggenheim, Trent Reznor’s nomination (!!), John Hawkes over Andrew Garfield, Jacki Weaver over Mila Kunis, no insta-directing nomination for Chris Nolan.

I could complain about no tech nominations for Shutter Island or Gosling being left out (although at least not in favor of Duvall) or 12 nominations for a film that wasn’t even the best looking HBO film I saw this year but for the moment, I’m thinking well done. Sorta.

I think these are pretty good numbers for The Social Network. It got nominated in practically every category it had a chance in, save for Supporting Actor. The nods in score, sound mixing, cinematography and editing show that there is widespread support for the film.

I’m not really sure why it’s such a surprise to some that TKS got 12 nominations. I predicted exactly that number as early as last week. Being a period film, it had the advantage in categories like Art Direction and Costume (and it already is two up on TSN by virtue of its two plus nominated actors)

Poor poor showing for Black Swan too. Just five, by my count?

Got Best Picture and Best Director right, and that’s it…

Love the I Am Love nomination,
    but 127 Hours for Score…really?

…and no Lesley Manville!! Good Lord.
Though Michelle Williams is perfectly fine.

Good that they didn’t nominate those horrible Burlesque songs,
though a shame that Tron: Legacy didn’t get Art Direction, or Visual Effects.

Oh, and hurray for The Illusionist!

Disgraceful. Total, complete capitulation to hardcore arthouse films (Weaver, Kidman, Bardem) and overrated directors (The motherfucking Coens getting circlejerked again by the Academy) while the best film of the year is rendered as nomination filler (Inception). And don’t get me fucking started on Nolan’s snub. What the F has he done to the Academy to earn this kind of hatred? Burlesque should have 3 nominations (2 song, costume design).

F these Oscars up their effing ass.

I agree. There are snubs but the nods overall are awesome. There is a bone thrown to many good movies – Another Year, Blue Valentine, I Am Love, Animal Kingdom, Exit – Gift Shop, Illusionist

They can’t be forgiven for snubbing Manville. Just wrong.

Black Swan underperformed with just 5 nods. Missing both sup. actress and screenplay.
    Inception missed director and editing.
    Social Network missed sup. actor.
The Fighter did pretty much as expected with editing as the lone tech nom.
The King’s Speech got everything. And then some.

    We have a race :D

  39. Greg Y Avatar

Yay: How to Train Your Dragon’s score gets the nod. Even though this really shouldn’t be in question (its score was indubitably one of the best of the year), I wasn’t really sure the Academy would go for it. Good that they did.
Nay: What’s up with the Garfield snub? Renner over Garfield seems pretty silly.
Yay: Williams gets in! Another Year for screenplay!
Nay: Russell over Nolan for directing? Really?

It’s still down to The King’s Speech, The Social Network, and The Fighter

The only 3 to get the director, editing, screenplay, acting combo with their best picture nom

Inception misses out big on Director and Editing, too bad

Hailee Steinfeld was a LEADING role, not supporting

Good to see a few surprises, but no real shocks (a la Tommy Lee Jones, In the Valley of Elah)

Incception has certainly the best editing achievement of the year. But the one that really made me laugh was King’s Speech in Sound Mixing! Really?! Over Toy Story 3? They are really mad about The King’s Speech. Beware The Social Network – you may be the new Saving Private Ryan.

Michael W: True Grit is the overperformer, not TKS. Was there any nomination that TKS got that was not expected?

I still think TSN is the frontrunner. DGA and WGA will confirm that. SAG is still up in the air, but I’m guessing it will go to The Fighter (I don’t see the SAG membership awarding a very young cast)

I cannot believe bonham-carter or that Inception does not get nominated for direction. IF KGS wins I will need a bucket. What is it about these big pompous costume dramas? It is time for more Masterpiece Theater productions to be released.

    Comment borrowed from another forum:

“Batman, Hulk and Hawkeye in the same category.”

Don’t forget Casanova Frankestein. And John Hawkes.

But I feel sad for Andrew Garfield “MAAAARK!”

  48. Ben M. Avatar

I have to say the winners are:
    King’s Speech
    127 Hours
    True Grit

    Losers are:
    The Town
Inception (no editing and directing nom, even if I predicted the latter)
Black Swan (no supporting actress or screenplay nom, I think either this film or more likely Inception would’ve missed if there had been only five slots)

Aside from a few big snubs in the techs, it was a fairly predictable morning. I think The King’s Speech got a bit of a boost with 12 noms and Garfield missing for supporting actor, but 4 tech noms for Social Network is pretty good also so there was nothing truly telling about who the frontrunner is from the nominations.
