After taking a stab at winner predictions early last month, it seemed now would be a good time to re-assess. Only three adjustments, though — for Best Picture, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. I’ll try my hand at another set post-nominations.

…haven’t taken the time to analyze the techs that much, but I hope that “Alice” doesn’t take THAT many.
sort of OT: Kris, do you think Javier Bardem will make a surprise nomination like Tommy Lee Jones/Laura Linney? Maybe bump Jesse Eisenberg?
I don’t think Steinfeld will win best supporting actress. Swap her for one of the Fighter girls (hopefully Adams) and my picks match yours.

Hmmm… How could Tron: Legacy not win visual effects? Inception was so minimalistic, everything felt like it was filmed to avoid the use of visual effects (except a few scenes in Paris).
Well, if there’s a movie that could do a slam dunk at the Oscars if it were to win it’s Inception. It’s ‘the’ arts and crafts movie of the year, and if it makes a surprise win for Original Screenplay, it could have enough awards to upset The Social Network.
My picks, so far:
Best Picture: The Social Network.
Best Director: David Fincher, The Social Network.
Best Actor: Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network.
Best Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan.
Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter.

True Grit: 3 awards.
The King’s Speech: 2 awards.
Black Swan: 2 awards.
Inception could face an upset at Score. How to Train Your Dragon and The Social Network could be a surprise.

The rest.

asdasdasd math fail. Inception, 4 awards. Sorry!
Louis:
It’s not so much on how much CGI you have, but how do you use them.
Those would be the exact same awards The Departed received. Also came out the first wknd in October. This doesn’t matter at all, I just find it randomly amusing.

I really really hope Alice doesn’t win best Art Direction. That branch is insane for Tim Burton even when he doesn’t deserve it or there is more worthy competition.
My predix as of now:
Best Picture: The King’s Speech
Best Director: David Fincher
Best Actor: Colin Firth
Best Actress: Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale
Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld
Best Original Screenplay: The King’s Speech

Foreign Film: ??
I don’t think all of those tech awards will go to Inception – TS3 or HTTYD might win a sound category or two. Art Direction and Costume can go to TKS or TG instead.

@Louis
I can bet less than 15% of the Academy members will have seen Tron. Its pretty awful, it was a flop and the Academy have shown in recent times that they will not vote for a film they hate even if it is deserving.
Transformers absolutely should have won, a break-through in visual effects but it did not. Tron absolutely should win, but Inception will win this in a cakewalk.
Red, Tron wasn’t a flop. Not domestically and it’s too early to say how it’s going to perform overseas. You are fooling yourself if you think Disney expected Avatarlike figures from it.
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, “The Fighter”
Best Original Screenplay: “The Kids Are All Right”
Best Art Direction: “The King’s Speech”
Best Film Editing: “Inception”
The four I have different.
True Grit is gonna end up earning more than Tron. Thats pretty bad to begin with if you ask me. And Tron was a 170 million dollar IMAX 3D blockbuster with a marketing blitz promoting it as the next big event movie. The numbers are pretty horrible. World-wide gross will have to be 500 million to break even. Its just at 290 now.
And I doubt if it will even perform on DVD. Its pretty bad you know. Almost nobody who saw it in theaters will buy it.
While bad, I saw potential and would have liked a sequel but I hear Disney obviously will not make a sequel now. The very fact that a would-be franchise was killed shows it was a flop and a huge disappointment and dare I say embarrassment for Disney.
If most costumes wins Best Costumes, I always assumed that Most visual effects wins Best Visual Effects (assuming they’re great)

I’m so happy to see so many people agree about Hailee Steinfeld. The Fighter ladies are great, but I suspect they’ll split votes and would love to see Hailee take it!!
I feel like Inception will get Art Direction whereas Tron may take one of the sound categories. Remember that King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha also won as many Oscars as Brokeback and Crash in 2006 (so I don’t think Inception racking up as many wins as Social Network is far fetched in the slightest)

Red, a difinition of what is or isn’t a flop should not depend on how something performs compared to something else. It’s a pretty strong word, and one that implies significant monetary loses. I do not foresee it happening.
What’s worse, your use of “it’s pretty bad you know” in relation to how Tron is doing as compared True Grit is downright misguided as you are comparing what is likely the highest grossing pure western of all time to an average holiday tentpole (with all the budgetary concern that go into it).
Moreover, you don’t know what the final figures are going to be on either one of those movies. I’ll give you domestic but Tron has not even opened everywhere yet. You use of the of “”horrible numbers”” and “now” doesn’t take into account that it didn’t open everywhere at the same time it opened in US. It will continue making money for months.
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way as I don’t imply any offense but the real problem is when people like youself with no real knowledge to speak of (I am sorry but it is obvious) start pulling numbers out of thin air and drawing conlusions. I can only assume you’ve been reading MCN and got a little too caught up in Polandnomics.
In any case, I assure you that a movie like Tron Legacy doesn’t need $500 million to brake even, as a smaller and, to me a perfectly reachable figure will suffice (and yes, that takes into account marketing).
“And I doubt if it will even perform on DVD. Its pretty bad you know.”
Yes, it is pretty bad considering that I think you are wrong. I think it will sell just fine, actually and I believe that if you are willing to wait you’ll see that I am right.
“Almost nobody who saw it in theaters will buy it.” Again, you don’t know that.
Not only is it going to do just fine on DVD, Disney and co. have been making money out of toys and commercial tie-ins too.
If Disney is planning to make a franchise out of Tron, I’d say they suceeded in making a first installment and have potential to grow. Far worse performers have been given sequels (Narnia 2, anyone?) Tron was a pretty limited name and it is the Original Tron that was a flop. They managed to make something out of that flop. Disney has nothing to be embarassed about on that account.
So why the sudden switch from The King’s Speech to The Social Network? I still see King’s Speech winning as it plays well with a larger scope of audience. Plus, The Social Network is due for a backlash any day now, how many critics award can a film win? People will grow tired of hearing it before ballots are due. Just my two cents.
@Louis, Inception clearly had more Visual Effects than you think.
I like Black Swan for Cinematography, giving it 2 statues.

@Maxim
I’ll just ignore all the condescending bits and say that not all of what a movie makes at the box office goes to the studio. Disney put in upwards of 300 million dollars into this thing.
Lets just sit tight here and wait for that sequel.
I honestly meant no offense and I agree.
I feel like a surprise is coming. I don’t know why, but I can feel it…
Hate the category fraud of it, BUT I’d still be pretty thrilled to see Steinfeld win.
Skipping the tech, I match-up with Marshall:

No way Amy Adams wins instead of Melissa Leo. That’s crazy.
In addition, “Inception” winning both sound categories will prove yet again the Academy has no idea what they’re voting on.

Amy Adams is overdue and I think members of the Academy will consider that.
I also feel a Globes/Sag/Oscar upset from Kidman.
I still believe that Natalie Portman will not win. And I don’t think the Academy will reward Steinfeld for a debut performance, although stranger things have happened. I think she will snag a lead nomination.

@ Nelson –
If there was going to be a “The Social Network” backlash, it would have happened a long time ago. I think that if it wins the Golden Globe for Best Picture, the race is OVER and we are looking at a repeat of 2008 with “Slumdog Millionaire.”

It’s interesting how some people are saying Portman wins with Bening as an alternate, but they’re nominated in different categories (looking at you above post :P)
Also, I think Kidman has a good chance of an upset here, but if I were a betting man, Portman all the way.
I really think the only category that has a bit of surprise to it is Supporting Actress. Steinfeld and Leo seem to be front-runners critically, with Adams and Kunis as other nominees…but that last slot is really tricky between Carter and Weaver. But I see a split vote between Steinfeld and Leo, opening the door for either Adams (overdue IMO) and Kunis.
Turns out I’m an idiot. I thought this was a globes prediction thing; Paul8148 you have teasing rights :P
