Sheep. Full list of winners at The Circuit.
More admirable is this:
“NSFC also issued a statement calling for a re-examination of the MPAA rating system and another condemning Iran’s recent sentencing of Iranian directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof.”

Sheep? Or what they honestly thought?
I swear to God, seeing TSN win every award out there does not bore me; hearing people complain and whine and make simplistic ‘sheep’ accusations is what’s starting to get old.
Well, the acting winners are all quite surprising, so I wouldn’t call them sheep. They think outside the box so often that we should just take this as their honest opinion.
Hardly sheep with those bold acting choices.
Not entirely surprising, of course. The membership is made up largely of NYFCC and LAFCA members, so…
LA and NY really don’t want to give Natalie a break, do they?
At least Olivia Williams got another notice.
Lord, cry me a river.
Who’s crying?
I am.
has any movie ever matched social netwroks intake of critical awards kris?
where are the other winners?
Best Screenplay, Best Production Design, Foreign Language, Documentary…
Req: Nope. I mean, not since every nook and cranny of the nation decided to put together a “critics association,” that is.
I’m still eagerly awaiting the Northwest Rhode Island Film Critics Circle’s take on the year. Maybe they’ll shake things up.
I’ll answer that and the answer is a massive no.
There have been times where it has been such like Sideways and specially No Country but never this level. The Social Network without an iota of doubt is one of the most widely and unanimously acclaimed films ever.
Woohoo after A Prophet, Vincere was probably my favorite film at Cannes in 2009 and Giovanna Mezzogiorno is phenomenal in it. I was extremely disappointed that the movie fizzled in its US opening, but this type of unexpected recognition makes me very happy. I believe Vincere also popped up in a few places on the NY Times critics ballot.
Wow, I think it’s nice for Geoffrey Rush who is the most serious threat for Bale. Nothing’s decided in the supporting actor category and I put my bet on Rush’s performance, let’s wait for the SAG/Globes/etc.
I’m glad for that! And I would like the same thing for Helena Bonham Carter, even if I LOVE Leo and Adams in The Fighter.
The “sheep” comment is a real turnoff. The NSFC has hardly been traditional in their choices in the past, so if they line up in support of what most people agree is an excellent film, accusations like this one come across as petulant.
Meh, this campaign is the Pied Piper.
In typical “sheep” fashion, I also think frustration with Social Network performing remarkably with critics is way off. The Social Network is being hailed as one of the very best films of the year because IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR.
It is one of the best films of the year, yes. That rarely if ever has anything to do with the price of tea in China when it comes to awards season, though.
I mean Social Network’s campaign can be anything but humble.
They can have just one blurb on their poster saying
“Best Film Of The Year”
– every critic group in the US (save San Diego, Phoenix, and Austin)
– every major critic in the US
– every major publication in the US
Poor other films have resorted to putting Top 10 mentions on their campaign posters. There is nothing else to put. One film has won each and every single award out there.
Sheep is right. Add to that, automatons, follow the leader, bandwagoning, and marching in lock-step.
ABC’s gotta be tearing their collective hair out. An Oscar show devoid of any excitement, suspense…with inevitability overflowing,
Didn’t “Slumdog Millionaire” get this many mentions by the critics’ groups?
Added three more wins for doc, foreign and a special award for Film Socialism.
If it’s their honest opinion on which film is best picture, how are they sheep? It would be dishonest to award a film they believe is lesser just to shake things up. If they did that and then Social Network won the following critics group than it would be back to calling them sheep. Personally if Social Network didn’t win any of the awards it would hardly matter to me because these groups don’t speak for me. I found it to be the years best film and no amount of awards, or lack thereof, can change that in my eyes.
Does anyone know if the NYFCC runners-up were ever announced or revealed? Totally forgot and never saw them pop up.
The acting categories are interesting though, at least. Maybe not Eisenberg, but the others certainly aren’t what we’ve been used to seeing. Odd that Edgar Ramirez didn’t take it for Best Actor though, since they were feeling so frisky with the rest.
Speaking of foreign language film, does someone have seen ”Incendies” from Canada?
It is a pretty good movie, but I’m afraid there is no such buzz around it. Anyways, I hope it’ll make the short list of the Oscars…
Best Cinematography went to Roger Deakins for True Grit, should be included on The Circuit.
So this is the second year in a row that LAFC, NYFC and NSFC picks the same in both best picture and director.
The Hurt Locker, The Social Network, GoodFellas and, of course, L.A. Confidential has pulled this of (am I missing some?), winning both from all three.
If we count National Board of Review, which TSN also took, we only have L.A. Confidential to match that. If the Broadcast Film Critics also pick The Social Network and Fincher we will have a first time ever with all “5 big ones” picking the same in picture and director. BFCA chose L.A. Confidential for picture but James Cameron for director.
Interesting ;-D
Full list, with runners-up, at The Circuit.
Giovanno WHO?
BEST ACTOR
*1. Jesse Eisenberg 30 – The Social Network
2. Colin Firth 29 – The King’s Speech
2. Edgar Ramirez 29 – Carlos
damn :)))
also, Bale lost by 1 vote.
$619,000; that’s all Vincere earned in the US. Kowtowing to the hardcore arthouse lobby. Inception not even included in any runner-up category? Disgraceful.
Kris, at The Circuit you have in runner up for Supporting Actor…
(Runner-up: “Carlos”)
Whoops.
Excellent choice NSFC!
Thanks Andrej. Adjusted.
Olivia Williams! Woo-hoo!
Olivia Williams.. and Giovanna Mezzogiorno!!! These are really unexpected and all too welcome choices!!
OK The Social Network may be one of the best films of the year but you might think from looking at the successive critic awards that it is the only good film that came out this year. Which is insane. I refuse to believe that every critic in America thinks The Social Network is the best film of the year.
I have to agree with Kris here. In a year that I believe contained about 8-10 other films that will be remembered for years to come, a movie would have to be The Godfather/Citizen Kane-like quality to win almost EVERY single critics award with such stiff competition. I’m sorry but The Social Network is not at that level. Plus, it’s boring, and it gives a writer(in this case Kris) very little to write about, which isn’t good for him.
Yeah, let’s tell all the film critics to concede to the bloggers lest they have nothing to write about…
Giovanna had 33 votes, Annette Bening had 28, and Lesley Manville had three or four less than her. Poor Annette. She was so close. This could have helped her. I think she is still winning though. And could Olivia Williams pull a Marcia Gay Harden? Hopefully not. Amy Adams for the Oscar!
Bening seems to have done okay, winning NYC, and runner-up here. Also, if I remember correctly, she got a handful of votes for LAC, but nowhere close to Kim Hye-Ja or Jennifer Lawrence. I wonder why Portman was not mentioned in at NYC, SOC, or LAC? She seems to be the frontrunner for the Oscar, yet seems shortlisted for the major critics awards. Maybe she’ll steamroll after the Critics Choice Awards.
Daveylow, that makes no sense. Are these awards given to “the only good film of the year”? No. Does every critic in America have to put TSN at #1 for it to win a consensus? No. Maybe you find all this boring, but read back over what you wrote and try to employ logic and reality next time.
I’m relieved to see Natalie Portman *not* steamrolling her way through all of the critics awards, as I feared she would. I can at least take solace in not thinking I’m in such a tiny minority of people who refused to climb on the OMG BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR bandwagon.
She’ll still win the Academy Award, though, because she’s young and hot and gives an “Oscary” performance.
Appreciate the sentiment, Mitchell, but it’s not that I don’t feel like I have anything to write about.
PaulH, firstly $619,000 is not “hardcore arthouse”. Secondly, it’s not a critics’ job to kowtow to the blockbuster crew. It’s not their fault you never bothered to see one of the most acclaimed films of the year.
Jesse Eisenberg is the frontrunner. I know that experts consider Firth because he`s due, blah, but AMPAS never had problem with awarding first-timers. I mena, c`mon, he scored so many wins, it`s crazy and TSN is shaping up to be a big sweeper. They won`t spread the wealth like they didn`t in other two ‘sheep” years 2008 and 2009.
Could this be the youngest line-up of winners ever? Jesse or James, Natalie, Christian and Hailee or Amy.
Jesse Eisenberg is not going to win Best Actor.
I hope The Ghost Writer surprises on Oscar morning. It has a great screenplay and Olivia Williams is very good in it.
