Olivier Assayas’s five-and-a-half-hour Carlos the Jackal biopic was the film I most regretted missing it Cannes, where its gargantuan running time prevented any repeat screenings. Happily, I have a chance to catch up with it at next month’s London Film Festival, and am enormously looking forward to doing so. (It will have its US premiere next week at the New York fest.) IFC will be releasing the film on October 15 both in its full miniseries-format glory and in a 150-minute theatrical cut; word from those I trust at Cannes is that the film rewards the long haul. Assayas is by far my favorite French director. I can’t wait.
Have to say, I caught it at the Jerusalem Film Festival a couple of months ago, largely due to the good word you reported from Cannes. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment.
It’s very obvious that this was made as a mini-series and only later edited – somewhat clumsily – into a feature. There’s a 40-minute segment of the hijacking at OPEC, which is intense and beautiful. The rest of the film is just dull – and I mean this in the harshest way possible. It’s just “Carlos moved to Lybia” then “Carlos met this woman,” then “Carlos moved to South America,” then “Carols got rich.” No action, no drama, and frankly, no story. Just a tiring, encyclopedic mash-up of events.
Maybe you’ll provide another perspective after you catch it….
I’ll certainly review (or capsule-review) it in my London fest coverage.
i saw CARLOS on TV channel Canal Plus and it was really good.
The new poster is very excellent, by the way.
