‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ trailer

Written by

I’ve said before that the “Harry Potter” films are frankly just collapsing in on one another in my head as of late. I can’t tell them apart. But then, I’m not overly interested in the series and I recognize there are tons of people out there who are. With that in mind, the anticipation around “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (which has been divided into two parts) is at a fever pitch. I may just sit down and rock out a marathon and square it all away in my mind before diving into the final two installments. We got a teaser for the whole shebang back in June.  Now a new trailer specifically for Part 1 has been released via Yahoo! Movies. Check it out by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

Looks likely for another Cinematography nomination, maybe Art Direction too.

With the Visual Effects category been “enlarged”, i think is a shoe in there.

Make Up could be but i think it will largely rely on FX so other films could displace it.

IMO, the film gets darker and darker…

This trailer is actually better than I expected…

I think the trailer is amazing. We could see HP in the top 10? May be the Academy want to recognize the series…the films are really good, with great cinematography, art direction, efects and a A-list cast.

    sorry, my english is bad.

Well it’s really hard to predict if it will make it to the top 10 knowing it’s performance for the past years…

I hope it will be considered in most of the tech categories… That’s the best thing I could hope for as of now…

Great trailer – definitely exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to seeing this… I wonder if Alexandre Desplat’s score will strike a chord with the Academy?

(Word is that John Williams will be returning to score Part II, so that’s basically an assured nomination….)

The latter half of the series thus far plays on a higher level of quality than a great number of the films nominated for Best Picture in the last ten years (of course, a few of those nominees are better, so don’t throw that back in my face, lol). But the first half is also extremely solid. I cannot freaking wait for these final two, as “Deathly Hallows” was the finest novel of the bunch.

The costume design in this movies is also pretty great, I’m surprised no one has mentioned it. I still think the Academy will wait for the last film to really consider the series for recognition, ala Return of the King.

But this is part of the last…

This part deserves to be considered.. Just to be considered… But I guess I’ll have to see the finish product first in November to see how it will fair to the other contenders..

Yes, but the others LOTR where nominated before.
And in this case, i think that Part 1 is going to be better than part 2(because of the book).
The films are beautiful shot, well acted(or very well in some cases), etc etc, but the Academy seems to don’t think so…

Maybe it lacked support from WB every campaign season?

Last year I think I just saw three or four FYC ad? Not sure but It didn’t have much compared to other movies….

“well acted(or very well in some cases),”

Maybe not the kids, but the supporting Brit thesps are roundly superb.

Jason Isaacs in the second film is my favourite supporting turn of that year. His scenery chewing is magnificent. He makes Charles Laughton look like William Hurt.

Michael Gambon was brilliant in the last film…

Alan Rickman has always been good in every film…

The seniors deserved some nominations this time..

Yes, i think that Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Carter, Rickman, Smith, Fiennes, Gleeson, Oldman and Imelda Staunton were all superbs, but the kids are getting better…

Rickman could make a play for a nomination with the last film I feel….

Then again Imelda Staunton and Jim Broadbent both should have been in the running (that DADA post!), but WB clearly doesn’t see benefit in an awards campaign (and I understand why not- a Supporting Actress nom is not going to make them any more money).

    In my dreams…nominations for:

    Picture
Supporting actor: Alan Rickman or Fiennes
    Art direction
    Editing
    Cinematography
    Design
    Sound Editing
    Sound Mixing
    Score
    Effects

    jajajaja

In my opinion, Broadbent gave the only truly deserving performance of the bunch. And boy, did he knock it out of the park.

    Debatably Thewlis. Debatably.

Also, to many of you, why would Rickman be nominated for playing a character he’s already played six times already?

Because he should be nominated the first time.

I cannot wait. I hope the Academy wakes up and realizes how great the series has gotten from ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ on… The kids are getting better with each film, and the older thesps have already produced award worthy work. Thewlis and Watson in the 3rd, Gambon, Broadbent and Rickman in the 6th, Staunton in the 5th… I really, REALLY hope the Academy gives this series it’s due with these final two. Not only because I’m a huge fan, but because they’ve been worthy.

In the last part, if they hem closely to the book, Rickman will be given the opportunity to hit quite a few more notes apart from Disdain. If he pulls it off, well…

I still wouldn’t put money on it.

Well, I’m excited. The series has always provided quality mainstream entertainment, and the last part looks suitably epic.
I expect it will be a big player technically. Arguably, Thewlis from Azkaban, Staunton from Phoenix, and Broadbent from Prince deserved Oscar nominations.

I really like the trailer so much.. Very promising just like “Half-Blood Prince”…

Also have high expectations for Helena Bonham-Carter… Though I guess her screen time will be put more on Part 2…

It’s just so sad that WB isn’t giving much campaign for the actors especially for the Brit supports… I hope they will this year since this will be the final stratch of the series…

But based on the trailer alone in my opinion… It stand a chance… Hopefully the film doesn’t dissappoint come November…

My freakin god that looks good
    And agree with everyone else
Alan Rickman has been one of the best and most consistent things of the entire series

A Best Picture nomination for any film in this assembly-line series would be about the most depressing thing the Academy could do.

  26. Douglas Avatar

Oh thats a bit harsh Guy.
What if either of these upcoming films actually deserved it? How could that be depressing?

  27. Hero Avatar
    Hero

I have no hope for acting nominations, simply based on how the screenplays have gone for the previous films. Based on the book, I thought Rickman should have had a chance for a Supporting nom in HPB, then I saw how butchered all of his big scenes were in the film, and knew he didn’t have a snowball’s chance. I expect more of the same.

  30. Duncan Houst Avatar

“Assembly line series”? “The most depressing thing the Academy could do”? That is sinking real low Guy. I think that anybody would agree with me that last year’s “Half-Blood Prince” deserved to be nominated more than “The Blind Side”. I’m not sure if you’ve read the final book Guy, but it is one of the most emotionally exhausting books in the series. If Yates and his crew can capture even half of that lightning, it will be a major force this awards season. Judging from reviews from test screenings, they already have, and then some.

Half Blood Prince did a lot for the credibility of this series. I think DH pt. 1 will be a safe bet in categories like Cinematography, Art Direction, Visual Effects, Costume design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. It could also sneak into categories like Original Score, Make Up, Film Editing, and Ralph Fiennes could be a long shot for Supporting Actor in a pretty weak year for the category.
Some magazine did a poll a few years back to determine the best movie villain of the decade, and Voldemort took it handily. If I’m remembering correctly, this was after The Dark Knight. But also up to this point in the series, Voldemort has had very limited screen time. His role in the 7th book is bigger than any other, and judging from what I’m seeing in the trailers, he looks almost omnipresent. I don’t see how someone like Ralph Fiennes gets ignored with that sort of role.
If the film gets all of the nominations I just mentioned, I don’t see how they ignore it in Best Picture.

I could see them getting into the 10 just as a recognition of the incredible amount of work put in (this series has been the gold standard in mainstream entertainment for a decade, and as a film series it is unrivalled for sheer technical/production achievement).

Though what I’d really like is for the cast to get the SAG ensemble award.

It looks amazing. But every trailer for the previous films looks amazing, and I was disappointed in the last 2 films (I guess, narratively). The techs, though, looks incredible. I could see a bunch or slew of tech noms. It would be nice for the series to have a Best Pic nom either this year or next. I think, as a whole, it deserves one.

Ok. I am a Harry Pothead and I am excited as hell for this movie. It looks fantastic. I understand that the ones not into Harry Potter must be feeling Potter-fatigue.

I never really thought HP got enough love from the Academy because the movie adaptations came out relatively soon after the books came out. If the movies were adapted 20 years from now, people who don’t like the series might enjoy them more.

I know I am biased, but this trailer is freaking EPIC!!!

I HATED the movies adaptation of Half-Blood Prince. I thought they left too much out pertaining to the story and David Yates focused too much on the romances that we saw before in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. I did love the look and feel of the movie though. The darker palette enhanced the mood of the film.

I am definitely in the minority in this, but I hate the third movie. I thought the tone changed too dramatically from the first two films. I have a personal vendetta against Alfonso Cuaron for changing the architecture of the school a bit. I do understand that a LOT of people hate the first two for being too childlike clunky. I personally love the first two because I love the feel of them. There is a, forgive me, magical quality that is present in those two that I didn’t really feel in the others.

Maybe it’s because I am a huge freak about HP, but I am really psyched for this film.

Kris, if you really are going to sit down and do a marathon to catch yourself up, you might want to skip the first two and just start with “Prisoner of Azkaban”. The Chris Columbus films are good fun, but they’re childish and ultimately unrewarding. When Alfonso Cuarón took over for the third installment, he elevated the series to a level of excellence that Mike Newell and David Yates have matched ever since.

(Of course, I could say the same thing about the books — Rowling didn’t really hit her stride until volume three — but Columbus still deserves some blame.)

Looking back on things it is shocking that none of the films have been nominated for Best Ensemble at the SAG awards, I mean Hairspray was nominated…

  38. Duncan Houst Avatar

@Jeremy – I’ve actually rewatched the first two, and the first one is a lot better with age, especially when taking into account how mature the characters are now and how humorously irritating they were then. The second one is more or less a retread of the first, but worth it for the mythological meaning of it. The only film I’d realistically skip is “Order of the Phoenix”, because nothing particularly important happens in it. It’s two hours of stalling, and then somebody dies for no particular reason.

  39. Jeremy Avatar

I definitely think there’s some great stuff in the first one, especially Emma Watson’s inaugural (and hilarious) performance. I just love how the series has darkened so dramatically over time, and the bright sunniness of the first two pictures rubs me the wrong as a result.

Also, I think “Order of the Phoenix” is terrific. It isn’t a plot-heavy installment (true of both the book and the movie), but it does a great job deepening Harry’s character. In the first four, he’s basically a pure hero, but OotP makes him a fully realized protagonist.

@ Joey: The series has changed a lot from the first 2 books till the last one.. It became darker that it’s no longer the “children’s novel” that it was introduced.. The series both book and film reached even the older generations that’s why I think it’s not fair to compare the first two films by Chris Columbus to the next 4 films that was released…

Though, Chris did a very good job in directing the first two because it has this child-friendly touch with it, which was the backdrop of the plot..

It’s just right to change the director for the third film for this was the transition of the film being darker and more mature..

I have my own disappointments in the film series mainly with the way it was written, but what’s the best thing about it is that the films never fails to improve it’s technical aspects (production values, special effects) in on way or another…

I definitely understand where Guy’s sentiments are coming from… He’s been very vocal that he didn’t like the films but considering it in some of the tech categories in his predictions shows that the film has a chance with some of the top contenders…

And by the way, I second the motion that “Half Blood-Prince” is more deserving than “The Blind Side” last year…
