When I took an initial stab at forecasting the Oscar season back in March, I hung my hat on the prospect of Edward Zwick, a perennial also-ran in Oscar’s years of five, and a promising true-story comedy “Love & Other Drugs.” I’ve been steadily pulling back on that punch, though, and while 20th Century Fox has little else in the hunt this season, it’s starting to look like Golden Globe territory more than anything else. Which is hardly a bad thing, mind you.
Then again, in a first look recently revealed by Entertainment Tonight (courtesy of The Playlist), the chemistry between stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway (reunited five years after “Brokeback Mountain”) is sharp and electric, while their performances separately seem to have a confidence and precision that might get them places in the season.
Based on the book “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman,” the film stars Gyllenhaal as the Jerry Maguire of the pharmaceutical business who meets Hathaway’s Parkinson’s suffering free spirit on a drug call. Cue romantic comedy stylings. Check out the ET first look (which likely foreshadows a trailer debut any day now) after the jump.

So frickin excited!
Didn’t really do anything for me.
Interesting. Pretty Woman/Up in the Air mash-up? Not necessarily a bad thing.
Well. I love Zwick movies. I love Hathaway. And I enjoy Gyllenhaal. Here’s hoping that combo proves positive for my viewing pleasure in a few months.
This is going to get four Oscar nominations?
im a zwick fan so im interested
Oh look, another rom-com about a suave, successful workaholic white guy who learns that the only way to be truly happy is through a committed relationship with a fantasy woman that exists only in the movies.
And it’s helmed by one of the most irritating directors working today. I’ll pass.
females and their drama i cant be doing with it.
Yeah, it looks better than every other romantic comedy, and I am a Zwick fan, but I don’t see any Oscar prospects at all here.
The movie , film performances , and the chemistry of the cast are already getting incredible test screening reviews- imdb , twitter , and hollywood elsewhere. I’m surprised it is not competing in the top film festivals. Hathaway ‘s stupendous performance is the performance to look out for. I predict box office gold and award recognition for this .
The test screening reviews on hollywood elsewhere are the same ones from IMDB dolt. And there’s 1 guy on IMDB who did not like it and a couple that did.
I’m glad we have a romcom with stars who are young, attractive, and talented.
Isn’t that how the movie industry should work? :-P
andrea, this hollywood elsewhere review wasn’t on imdb : http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com/2010/02/hathaways_big_s_1.php
Looks pretty good, but I grow tired of this Hollywood message that marriage and/or a committed relationship is the only way to be happy. I’m plenty happy living how animals are supposed to live.
Is it necessary to make Jake Gyllenhaal so shamelessly hetero ?
Full trailer is up at Apple
Robert Hamer: “…it’s helmed by one of the most irritating directors working today. I’ll pass.” Although I won’t let myself not see this film (as I did not see “Defiance”), I agree with your choice of the word irritating. Of all the movies that Edward Zwick has made, only two have worked: “Blood Diamond” and the perfect-in-every-way “Glory.” His others have been misfires, if you ask me, especially “The Siege.” This looks to be different than his other films, though, so count me in.
Question:
Why did you erase my comment in HOW DO YOU KNOW TRAILER post with the link of this clip?
It wasn’t erased. It was likely quarantined if it included a link. Because of some rather childish antics a few seasons back we had to set the system up to hold all comments with a link in them until approved, and I just haven’t made it into the back end to approve your comment yet.
It’s probably gonna get an R-rating. Bonus!
I’m game for it. Funny, sexy, smart, looks like a classic piece of worthy oscar bait and mild miracle for the romantic comedy genre.
It looks like a better that usual romantic comedy but Oscars are iffy but Idid get a vague 500 Days of Summer vibe. But since that didn’t deliver for the Oscars who knows
okk.. I loved the trailer .. it seems good .. but Kristopher it seems far away from anything like an oscar material .. common how many romantic comedies have got nominated for oscars … even Meg Ryan wasn’t for the ultimate When Harry Met Sally.. so how could Anne be .. for sth like this … LAOD .. seems more like Bollywood stuff .. funfilled romance with a sentimental/emotional last half an hour … nd I will stick with it ..
PS: nobody’s going to get nominated for this … for sure !! bcoz Oscar respects history ..
*Sigh* I wish Gyllenhaal wasn’t wearing a merken.
As with any film, especially during this season, I am interested in seeing it regardless of what I think its awards prospects will be. After all, why should one *only* see Oscar-nominated projects?
That being said, I never saw this as Oscar material based on those early reviews, but I also forgot to factor in Golden Globes, and I think the movie and Jake & Anne are possible shoo-ins if it’s well-reviewed.
Also, I’ve decided that I will see anything involving Judy Greer.
The film, which is like ‘Up in the Air’ with more humour or ‘(500) Days of Summer’ with less quirk, is fantastically acted by the leads and supporting ensemble of familiar faces. The writing is phenomenal with some of the freshest dialogue and wittiest banter I’ve seen since Howard Hawks’s ‘His Girl Friday.’ The story is also very topical, especially in the days of the fight for healthcare reform. Director Edward Zwick (Glory, Blood Diamond) puts forth one of the best films of his career alongside a list of solid past work, creating some of the most heart-wrenchingly sad and gut-wrenchingly funny cinematic moments in a while. The film is also full of some of the hottest and funniest sex scenes I’ve seen in a long time, so the movie’s humour isn’t all guys will want in this romantic-comedy. Overall, ‘Love and Other Drugs’ is a great variation to the 2010 romantic comedies thus far, giving something worthwhile outside of the typical ‘The Bounty Hounter’-type rom-coms.
Where can I get a list of the songs used in this movie? I saw the trailer for it on tv and there’s a song in there that I would love to download but can’t seem to find it in the trailers that I find on line. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
