i like diane lane but this seems well made, extremely glossy and inspirational and entirely uninteresting
Mark
I agree…it doesn’t seem to be aimed at awards season at all. Looks like another Blind Side; of course we all know how that ended. I don’t know what to make of this trailer.
Kevin
I echo Mark’s comment completely. “The Blind Side” is exactly what I was reminded of.
On a side note – is that Diane Lane’s real voice or is she putting on an accent? As I’ve not seen any of her films, I’d just like to know. Her voice was…kind of creepy to be honest.
Back on topic, I’d have to answer Kris’s question with a resounding “No!” Not 100% sure if “Seabiscuit” nabbed a Best Picture nom but this, on first impression, doesn’t seem to have anywhere near the emotional heft to warrant such consideration.
Michael
@ Kevin: Seabiscuit did get a best picture nom.
I agree with all your “Blind Side” talk. This looks horrible.
Malkovich must have a big problem getting casted these days. Otherwise, I can’t explain his participation in this movie.
JJ
Ehh, looks nice to me; in the same way the Amelia trailer made it look nice. Here’s hoping this is a little bit better. And I’m a sucker for inspirational movies, anyway – particularly involving horses.
Bryan
It’s a period version of The Blind Side with young colts instead of black football players.
I definitely feel like John Malkovich’s character’s wardrobe in this movie is really just John Malkovich’s wardrobe in real life.
greg
I normally would be in agreement with you all about a trailer like this. But I dunno, there is something about the way Diane Lane is carrying herself in the trailer, it makes me want to see this story.
Plus it has one of my most favorite character Actresses of all times in this film. Margo Martindale (Dexter and The Riches) Is just about my favorite thing about most movies that I spot her in- Just check out the criminially under-seen/valued teen flick called rocket science. She just owns the screen.
Guy Lodge
Hell to the no.
PS. Before anyone suggests it might be another “Blind Side”-style success, let’s just remember that Diane Lane, for all her merits, is no Sandra Bullock.
JJ
Ha! Bryan’s description looks bang-on:
“It’s a period version of The Blind Side with young colts instead of black football players”.
Derek 8-Track
Don’t think it’ll be this years blind side or anything else…
However I do pray every night that Kick-Ass is this years District 9
I find it hilarious that the reasons everyone is dismissing this film as an awards contender are the very same reasons films become awards contenders.
Derek 8-Track
good point
Mark Kratina
@ Guy:
Diane Lane is a much better actress than Sandra Bullock. Have you seen Unfaithful, for which she was nominated for best actress? She was brilliant.
Sandra doesn’t have that kind of depth. She can play the cutesy role- she’s good at it. It has won her an Oscar and razzies alike. Diane Lane has played a much wider range of roles and is great in everything I’ve seen her in.
Sandra Bullock is no Diane Lane.
Derek 8-Track
But Sandra can bring in housewives, leather clad bikers with a crush, white guilt ridden conservative Christians, and Demolition Fan fans. Diane can’t
Guy Lodge
I was referring to Bullock’s commercial clout, actually. As actresses, I like them both.
By the way, Lane is fine in “Unfaithful,” but that performance pales beside her work in “A Walk on the Moon.” Sorely undervalued turn (and film).
Tye-Grr
This is another of those glossy feel-goody movie trailers in the vein of ‘The Blind Side’, except when I saw the first trailer for ‘The Blind Side’, I actually said, “Wow, something tells me this could be Bullock’s Oscar nomination.” Granted, I never thought she’d actually win, but I was among the first to say she’d be a nominee. I don’t get that same feeling here for Lane, but I think it’s because Lane is already a previous nominee, and she’s surely done better work. In a sense, this could look like a step back, where for Bullock, it was a step forward.
I guess time will tell, but I can’t immediately see any Oscar prospects. I loved ‘Seabiscuit’, though…
JJ, that may be true, but think of some of the other things we did as children. Who consumes pop music more than the young? Eventually you have to escape and look upon that past with shame.
Secretariat is really an inspirational movie! Its trailer alone inspired conversations on commercial films, pop music and whether age should matter in relation to the above. :p
The movie is probably gonna give us a lot to laugh at, especially if it makes over 150 mil.
I think I’m not going to watch it only because I would have to make fun of me if I end up liking it.
JJ
Chad, Guy, James, etc. — I totally understand what you’re saying. I watch things now that I loved as a child (movies, music videos, shows) and think, ‘My God, this is badddd’. haha. And ‘Secretariat’ could be an awful “movie”.
I’m just saying, there are many commercial films that are well-crafted, well-acted, entertaining, etc., and sure, maybe they’re even sentimental, too.
But I think it shows a shallow critic to not like a film simply because it’s inherently commercial, and not some gritty, deep-thinking docudrama or something akin to that.
“I think it shows a shallow critic to not like a film simply because it’s inherently commercial, and not some gritty, deep-thinking docudrama or something akin to that.”
Indeed. But now you’re projecting a perspective that nobody here claims to have. There’s a difference between being exacting within a field and dismissing that field altogether.
JJ
Well said. I did not intend that for it to come across that way.
After having hit the send button, I realize that I meant to say ‘dismissing a field altogether’ without giving the work a shot – to see if it is indeed bad, or a welcome surprise, etc..
JJ
On the flip side, anyone can do whatever they want, haha. Who am I?
Anyway, I’m not judging the movie so much as I’m judging my interest in the movie based on the trailer. Which is what the trailer is for. And my interest is -1000.
JJ
Yeah, I see what you’re saying, Chad. I’d say the trailer made me want to watch it, and I still want to, and still will, but it got progressively saccharine. Who knows just yet.
This is what trailers are for, especially these days: to give us a taste of exactly what we’re gonna get. And judging by the filmmaker’s past sports-oriented works, each operates like a tearjerking, cheer-jerking machine. It’s okay if that’s what you wanna pay for; as for me, I’m moving on. I’m predicting no play from the Academy on this one, as much as I like the cast members.
This trailer looks generally quite dull, but I found the references to “The Blind Side” funny. They’re true, I think (Lane must be fuming that Bullock won an Oscar for playing a well-meaning, bottle blond housewife trying to make something for herself in a sports movie since it’s what she’s doing here too) but the argument from several people that Bullock couldn’t pull of a performance like Lane’s in “Unfaithful” is an inherently flawed one. Fortunately for Bullock she hasn’t TRIED to do a performance like Lane’s in “Unfaithful”.
And, I’d wager, Lane couldn’t even come close to replicating Bullock’s performances in, say, “While You Were Sleeping” or “Miss Congeniality” so the effect runs both ways.
cineJAB
i’m leaning more towards an Amelia comparison than a Blind Side comparison. “Based on a true story…that like 30 people care about at this point.”
“i’m leaning more towards an Amelia comparison than a Blind Side comparison. “Based on a true story…that like 30 people care about at this point.”
And one horse.
JFK
Diane Lane looks really strong, I would see it for that reason alone.
The Disney and PG aspects are less than savory, could be another Amelia, but who knows.

Phooey on the naysayers. Yeah, this is not a work of cinematic art unless you count unashamed sentiment, meant to appeal to the common folk, fun to watch a “real” winner for a change kind of artfulness. And, yeah, that scene with the little colt getting right up had a pull to it that goes beyond the ordinary. I know that I shouldn’t like this but it looks like one of those movies that brings a little tear to the eye and makes you swell with pride for some stupid reason or other. I never felt that way once watching the dopey and deadly dull Amelia trailer. Something about a magnificent animal, though and the greatest triple crown winner of all time….not to mention a strong woman going against the grain of those old boy clubs makes me want to see this, bad or not. Besides which, it has a good ending. Secretariat eventually gets to go off and have fun with his pick of fillies. If a flick like Dances with Wolves could impress the Academy, why not this? That’s not meant as an endorsement by the way.

the trailer looks ridiculous, so I would obviously say NO! but considering The Blind Side effect… who knows
And why is this being posted on serious Awards sites? It looks crappy.
I was into it until I saw, From the Producers of The Rookie, Miracle, and Invincible.
After I saw that, I knew it would be overly saccharine, feel-good, and lacking in any real conflict (The Disney screen should have tipped me off).
That said, I’d probably still see it. Diane Lane and co. are worth the price of admission.
I definitely feel like John Malkovich’s character’s wardrobe in this movie is really just John Malkovich’s wardrobe in real life.

Hilarious, even if you did mean “Demolition MAN.”

Couldn’t pay me to see it
Come on Chad. You do it purpose. Admit it!
Either way, your variations of “it seems as bad as getting head from a camel” are always hilarious.
For me at least.
haha, I’m fascinated by your opinions/statements, Chad.
I can be a cynic. And I look for challenging, original material like the next film fan.
But my God, do you like ANYTHING commercial? Aren’t those types of movies why we started watching them as little kids in the first place?
To clarify – isn’t watching and enjoying commercial movies as a child what got us watching films in the first place?
Does this film really look like it’s worth arguing with Chad over? I’m with him.
JJ, that may be true, but think of some of the other things we did as children. Who consumes pop music more than the young? Eventually you have to escape and look upon that past with shame.
I’m pumped for The Other Guys
What’s wrong with pop music? I still consume it, and I feel no shame whatsoever.

Entirely forgot about A Walk on the Moon. Great film.

LOVE Meet Joe Black.

I doubt it.
If this kind of film appeals to you, no need to be ashamed about it. Stick up for your tastes everyone!
blast!
I did mean “Demolition Man fans”
glad the joke still worked.
It is a horse movie. Therefore to appease the 9-year old girl inside of me who still squees every time I see a horse, I will be seeing this movie.
