It’s almost as if the ratings-hungry Oscarcast producers watched last night’s BAFTA sweep for “The Hurt Locker,” finally accepted they’re going to receive no assistance from the awards, and duly sprung into action.
Right on cue comes today’s announcement that Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Zac Efron will all be presenting on March 7. Perhaps if they add Robert Pattinson, they can present the Best Supporting Actress category together, heartfelt individual tributes and all.
Here’s hoping Stewart practises her smile over the next two weeks. Not even a BAFTA Rising Star award could cheer her up last night.

Again, I don’t see how tapping some of the biggest movie stars in the world right now is desperate, no matter how little we may like them or their movies. And for the record, I think Stewart and Efron are extremely talented and in line for long, successful careers.
I much prefer this desperate attempt at popularity than sitting down 70 old Oscar winners for a “group photo” in a desperate attempt at class.
I have no serious problem with it, though I think the producers are overestimating the potential teenage audience for the Oscars, regardless of who presents.
I was just amused by the timing.
I will hand it to Taylor Lautner: After Felicity Huffman and a slew of other flubs on Golden Globes night, he actually pulled off one of the more coherent and fluid presentation.
I still cant’ take his ass seriously.
And I truly think Efron is on his way to escaping the stench-riddled void that is High School Musical. I actually think the guy has talent.
But Stewart and Cyrus are enough to make me want to leap off a clock tower.
Aren’t the producers always trying to find someway to attract the young and failing miserably wasn’t Miley invited last year?
Anyway Miley Cyrus is soo 2009, I know my teenaged cousin called her not a very nice name, not long ago, needless to say I was shocked.
I seriously cannot see teenagers and twihards watching the whole ceremony and agreeing on the merits of The Hurt Locker beating Avatar.
@ Megan – I go with the Kermode view of Zac Efron and I have to admit I was pleasantly suprised with ‘Me and Orson Wells’.
Timing aside, this really isn’t anything revolutionary. Pattinson presented last year, as did Miley Cyrus, and Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgins were in one of the dance numbers. And then there was the Pineapple Express gag, which for me was one of the highlights. The show has tried to be hip to younger viewers for several years now.
Lautner being at yet another award show makes me NOT want to watch it. He passed the over exposure line 3 award shows ago. Teenagers may turn in, but they’ll loose the more mature generation. I personally don’t care who the presenters are, my main reason for watching are due to the hosts. They’re on screen a lot more than the presenters.
Utter Rubbish. What happened to when actual legitimate actors were the only ones at the Oscars. You had to earn your way there. All of a sudden I am seeing Efron & Cyrus there for the second damn time in a row. Now Ialso got to see the werewolf boy who is so damn overrated, as well as this awkward chick.
Do they even know that after the little kiddies see their stars they won’t watch anymore.
Next you know we might hear Jersey Shore cast, there (god help us if we do).
Why hasn’t HP cast been asked to attend? Is it because they british. and Twilight is more American? Not even Fanning been asked to attend, but I got to see these 4.
Shoot me, if you will, but I’ve always thought that Pattinson was kind of brilliant as Edward Cullen. And Stewart came into her own with “New Moon.” Lautner has some growing to do, but he could go places. And Efron is very, very talented, I think.
Cyrus, though…eh. “The Last Song” might change things, but right now, I just find her obnoxious.
I’m with Chad I think Stewart has immense potential. Despite her clearly incessant need to nervously play with her hair I thought she was extremely affecting in Adventureland. She really rounded the character out and make her full and sympathetic despite some less than admirable behavior
Cyrus is the only one that pisses me off. Every award show she does she sticks her tongue out like a spaz.
Of course this could only mean the inclusion of the Jonas Brothers. Kill me.
I just hope they have them all present an award together so we can get them out of the way quickly. It isn’t like I oppose to their presence entirely– as people have mentioned, the Oscars have always included people they think of as more popular/populist in their broadcast. But the timing and franchises these people are associated with still seems extremely cynical and ratings-grabbing to me. More importantly, I don’t think it will work so it just seems pointless.
To be fair to Miley, she was part of Bolt last year.
Kris,
Please tell me that it’s a costume award or a tech award (Animated film is the max- the Jonas Brothers gave it to Wall-E at the GG’s last year, dontcha know?)
They may have a chance at potential careers, but I just hate this move because of why it was done – pandering to the type of people who enjoy their current works.
Everyone who tweets positive things about Shankmans decisions have been fans of him or fans of SYTYCD, basically….hes living in a sheltered bubble.
Charlie, Guy wrote the article.
Personally, I prefer old cinema legends than good looking young stars with mediocre talent.
I realy hate the fact that people who don’t care about the Oscars as much as we do, decide (indirectly) what we’ll be watching. A parade of Oscar-unrelated popular people. I hate majorities.
Kristin Stewart would be really pretty if she did something about those bags under her eyes. It makes me feel a need to supply her with meth.
I don’t really care about any supposed prestige, especially when you factor in Best Picture nominee The Blind Side and so many others from years past.
I think it’s a disgrace and a real slap to people who have really achieved something in film over the years. Aren’t the Oscars designed to honor them? Gee, with all this fluff and filler, will there be room to honor the people who were actually nominated?
Keep dumbing yourself down, America.
April’s Fool?? oh! the Oscars are in MARCH!!
These 4 are squeezed in and Lifetime Achievment Awards for Bacall, Willis and Corman are out?
Get rid of these clowns!
Unless they have an orgy on stage they won’t add anything.
Jonathan Spuij, don’t give them ideas :p
Call me crazy, but I’ve always been one of those Oscar watchers who’s more concerned with the recipients than the presenters. In fact, I’d actually be comfortable with the host presenting each award, but I realize that’s not A.D.H.D.-friendly enough for the audience at large.
Yeah, the decision is eye-rolling in its shamelessness, but altogether unsurprising. And to be honest, if that’s what the producers feel they need to do because of the expected results, so be it. I’d rather have a compelling film like “The Hurt Locker” walk away with 5-plus Oscars — including Best Picture — and suffer the likes of populist presenters than have a lesser film sweep with presenters I’d enjoy.
Kristen Stewart is so damn awkward, she needs serious media training…I can’t get over how unprepared she is for publicity. Robert Pattinson is only moderately better…
Stop being a bitch. Kristen Stewart is a refreshing change to the others who have achieved success through the same kind of movies as her. Just because she doesn’t gush and smile a lot doesn’t mean she isn’t grateful or happy. Try listening to what she actually says instead of just judging by her face plz.
“Kristin Stewart would be really pretty if she did something about those bags under her eyes. It makes me feel a need to supply her with meth.”
God this site is such a sexist-magnet, I swear.
Girl who doesn’t giggle smile or IMMEDIATELY ATTEND TO the bags under her eyes is a blatant failure who needs to sort herself out!
“Kristen Stewart is so damn awkward, she needs serious media training…I can’t get over how unprepared she is for publicity. Robert Pattinson is only moderately better…”
Who cares.
It’s really only Cyrus that I have a problem with, as I really think she has zero career after the next couple of years. Stewart I have minor issues with, as she constantly stammers and acts like with each stutter there’s a sudden birth of meaning, and Lautner is going to be a movie star whether we like it or not. Shockingly he was the best of the three main actors in Twilight: New Moon.
Efron definitely has a career ahead of him, and I’ve been impressed with his performances. Even in such crap movies, he still tends to bring something to it. I don’t know what that something is, but it definitely doesn’t suck.
If Kristen is going can Shia Labeouf go too? at least his girlfriend is a nominee. I think he is cute
I have to say Im pleasantly surprised to see a good amount of support for these actors (kids). Aside from Stewart I don’t particularly care for any of them but I do think they get an unfair amount of drubbing here and elsewhere.
Aleksis, I don’t see how that was sexist. Men can look unhealthy as well.
Hey, as long as they are the ones PRESENTING the awards, and people like Kathryn Bigelow and Mo’Nique are the ones RECIEVING them, I couldn’t care less.
Aleksis,
yeah, nothing sexist at all. chill.
The timing is purely coincidental, you mean to tell that at 11P — the academy starting calling all these stars? I don’t think so.
At least Kristen Stewart showed up — if Monique had some greater competition, like maybe the inglorious Basterds gals, she might actually lose, she just gives the impression that she is not interested == her pre-golden globes no shows, her not showing up to the oscar luncheon, not showing up to the BAFTA’s — if it wasn’t for her performance and her speech at the globes, I don’t think she would be as much of a shoo in.
Honestly, who cares whether some teenage stars are going to present the awards? Will it change anyone’s lives? Will this affect the results?
For crying out loud, it’s not like they are going to try to rescue hostages from Somali pirates. All they will do is read names in a paper.
The dude,
its about lowering the standards, and pandering to an audience that doesnt give a damn about the oscars. If we start giving in to them now, well, looks like MTV movie awards has some real competition…
And again I’d like to point out that all they are going to do is read names in a teleprompter and then read one name in a paper. You don’t need to be Jack Nicholson or Meryl Streep to do that, and having the Twilight kids doing it doesn’t affect the Oscars at all.
“Give in to them” would mean nominated Megan Fox as best actress and Valentine’s Day or Transformers as Best Picture, and the Oscars are not doing it. Not yet, anyway.
Lautner looks like a chimp.

Have you forgotten we’re up to 10 Best Picture nominees? A move that has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with ratings and pandering to lower common denominators!
Adam: Of course it’s coincidental. Doesn’t mean I can’t find it funny.
I don’t hate the idea of it – it’d be like getting Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson to present in 1985 I guess – but the deep-seeded belief that young kids are going to watch a 3.5hr award show because some of their faves are on it for a few minutes is just so ludicrous.
Al, isn’t Best Picture nominee The Blind Side and likely Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock already lowering standards?
Kristen Stewart is ok, i used 2 feel she was way 2 miserable and indie chicky, now i think she is just shy and sensitive and seems like a nice person.
Ok, why don’t they include Megan Fox, Shia LeBeouf, The Jonas Brothers, the kids of Nickelodeon, the cast of 90210, Paris Hilton, Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z, and then we have a Teen Choice Awards in the Kodak Theatre.
hear hear!! matsunaga
ok i just can go and vomit. three of these… children, are furniture in this planet. sorry to the fans but they have NO talent whatsoever. Shamelesly, hollywood love nice faces with no real talent.
the only one that could be spared? Stewart. A carrier ruined, i think, by meyers “books”. Hope she gets as far from vampires as she can.
You don’t get to headline a major Hollywood franchise if you have no talent. End of story. The limits of their talent may be debatable and the quality of the films they headline as well, but they are there for a reason.
James D,
yes, and how did it get nominated? by expanding the nominees to 10. which is pandering….
[…] di tanti attori. Ma allora perché gli Oscar non se li vede da casa? Almeno, come ironizza In Contention, speriamo che in queste due settimane si alleni a sorridere, visto che (come evidente […]
I guess I don’t really care, in the grand scheme of things, but Taylor lautner is very hard to look at. I’ll be changing the channel when he presents.
I don’t understand what Miley, Taylor or whatever other disney channel elite has to offer to the oscars? The Baftas was pure class, the only invited those who actually deserved to be there!
The one person I believe should be there is Kristen Stewart. Theres a reason why the industry nominated her for Bafta rising star and theres a reason why we don’t hear a single negative thing said about her by those in the industry! The others…FAIL!
