Streep at NYFCC Awards

Written by

Courtesy of Jeff Wells, here’s Meryl Streep accepting Best Actress from the New York Film Critics’ Circle. Streep should really offer tutorials in award acceptance — the format of a critics’ award dinner allows her to ramble more than at more formal ceremonies, but her wit and sincerity hits home every time. I loved this zinger:

I’d like to thank Sony and Amy Pascal for sending me to REAL Paris, unlike Fox on “The Devil Wears Prada,” who sent me Midtown…

it’s really funny that she’s still commenting on the Andrew Sarris thing…

She’s so funny and classy. It would be delightful to have her giving another wonderful speech on Oscar night instead of the usual prefabricated lines that recent winners have used. This is how you should give a speech!!

What I like most about her is she seems genuinely baffled by how much people love her and love her work. She’s past being surprised by it (which I’m glad because sometimes when someone acts that way it comes across as very insincere), but she seems almost embarassed, but grateful by the adoration.

The same people that supported Slumdog fever and helped it sweep an Oscar race that it clearly didn’t deserve to sweep are complaining about Avatar fever now? Puh-lease.

That zinger about Paris and about Fox only sending her to Midtown and that she had to pretend (which was HARD!) was just hilarious. I definitely hope she wins more awards so we can hear more of her wonderful acceptance speeches.

She is definitely on the way to the Third.

Matt: What does that have to do with Streep? I’m confused.

Did she not mention Amy Adams? I guess they never actually worked together on the film, but she was still the ying to her yang.

She should’ve thanked Amy Adams for taking the fall by starring in the “Julie” segment and hence making Streep look even better by comparison.

But Meryl’s way too classy for that… it would’ve been pretty mean.

When I was younger, don’t know why, I used to think that Streep was massively over rated but when I actually watched much of her body of work I finally saw what the hype was all about.

She may not have the best performance of the year but considering how rather mediocre J&J was she really did make something out of that role. It may not been her best performance but I do hope she gets her third Oscar and treats us with another speech like this one.

As a serious-slash-dedicated Streep fan, I do like seeing her win awards, if only to watch her make those zany, genuine speeches of hers. I agree with stylewriter. She always seems genuinely baffled by people continuing to appreciate and reward her work. I suddenly remember that Emmy speech where she went, “You know, there are some days I myself think I’m overrated… but not today.”

I do hope she’s on her way to the Third. It would be such a treat, especially for a relatively new fan like me. :)

Although, I have to say, without having seen ‘Precious’ and with only seeing ‘An Education’ and ‘Julie & Julia’, that she’s up against some really talented competition. It makes for a race that a fairly new movie geek like me would find exciting.

Do I need to say more, she will dominate this year for her memorable perf for Julie & Julia. Thank you critics for choosing the right winner this year. Now on to Critics Choice, Globes, SAG and OSCARS. Cheers to Meryl! Finally, I can say, this is her year!!!!

One of the best when it comes to no bs speeches.

I suggest people go watch her acceptance speech for “Sophie’s Choice” on YouTube. Streep wasn’t always this way.

Her delivery of “who sent me Midtown” is priceless.
