This weekend has already brought junket screenings of Rob Marshall’s “Nine,” so we can’t call it “unseen” anymore. Then again, everyone has signed agreements not to discuss (even trigger happy HFPA types), so we can still safely call it “awaited.” Screenings of “The Lovely Bones” may or may not be set prior to the big London unveiling on the 24th, while “Invictus” is expected to start rolling out next week. “Avatar,” meanwhile, has nearly another month before we get a look.
The question is, which one is going to miss and miss big? Perhaps the answer is none, I don’t know, but we’re in that dangerous territory where anticipation could kill the impact and/or something might just fall on its face, much like we’ve seen over and over again in the past with countless other pretenders. If you have an opinion, let us know in the what that is. Come on back here with further thoughts if you wish.

I think all four will underwhelm artistically, but the Lovely Bones will be most satisfying and Avatar most underwhelming.
Avatar (aargh) and Invictus will not underwhelm financially, but the other two? Hmm.
‘Nine’ and ‘Avatar’ are gonna hit it big. Critically and financially.
‘The Lovely Bones’ and ‘Invictus’ are going to be very well recieved but will not do as well at the boxoffice.
I suspect all will under whelm. Not thinking in terms of box office – or awards potential – more so in critical and audience responses.
I hope they all do well just to keep Star Trek and District 9 out of Best Picture.
Both were half-assedly written and depended on aint it cool to save them.
I’ve never heard a logical justification for the claim that District 9 is “badly written”. I would agree on Star Trek, but I think with District 9 you need to back up that claim with evidence.
Mark (#41) In what world does Invictus look like Cry Freedom…other than the completely superficial nature of the actors skin color. What an asinie thing to say.
I think Nine will overwhelm…and I don’t think DDL will get nominated at the Oscars for his performance.
I’ve had some doubts about Nine for a while nom and thus it is not in any of my major category predictions, now it would be great if all four December releases deliver, but logically I would guess two will underwhelm to an extent.
Avatar, definitely. The Lovely Bones, Nine, and Invictus could all turn out to be less than the spectacular we’re predicting for them, but Avatar is supposed to be the technically immensely ground-breaking and amazing next step in filmmaking as well as an excellent sci-fi adventure romp. And when you put it like that, it’s hard to imagine it not disappointing in some way. And that’s not all the fans saying that, it’s coming down from the top as well. Not to mention how underwhelming the trailers seem, at least to me. Breath-taking and intriguing, yes, but not something that I see and think “oh well that’ll be effing amazing.”
But then, The Lovely Bones, Invictus, and Nine all have spectacular trailers, and when movies have great trailers there’s always a fear that the movie won’t live up, so maybe it’s a good thing Avatar’s trailers haven’t got me hoping too high.
nine- just cuz i wont see it, musicals arent my genre.
just throwing this out there, is it just me or does Brothers actually look pretty good???
Brothers is not a bad movie. The directing and performances are strong, in fact. One of the standouts is Bailee Madison, who I believe was eight years old during principal photography.
SHAAARK,
Well for one the deus ex machina is used far too much.
-The implausibility that the Aliens would be allowed to be in possession of their weapons.
-The tiny shuttle that broke off would’ve been confiscated by the gov’t.
Brothers looked great in the trailer but the actual movie was somewhat dissapointing. Portman’s acting was brilliant but the daughter, Bailee Madison’s performance was forced and hard to watch.
