I am really starting to like Rourke as a person. I think the Larry King interview put me in that category.

Watching both Milk and The Wrestler, possibly?

I don’t think that bottle on his mouth is very flattering. I get what you’re saying, but also if you show a poster of Sean Penn smiling and cheering as Harvey Milk, how can you say no to that guy? Then you see Randy the Ram on the ring and that final shot of the film, how can you say no to that guy? I can’t make up my mind, I love them both, and will be happy to see either win (can’t we have a tie? it happened 40 years ago, why can’t it happen again?).

I know what everyone is sayins. I honestly can’t say no to the guy. He’s freaking awesome, badass, cool…etc. But i loved Milk too much and Sean Penn to give my vote to Mickey. Trust me i was championing for him since before summer; but then i saw Milk and what Sean Penn did in that movie and i decided to root for him instead. not saying i’d be upset if mickey won, just very dissapointed.

I have to admit, I love his public persona. The funny thing is, I get the impression that he is like that all of the time (which makes me like him more). While I prefer Penn (as milk is my favourite of the nominees), I would be pretty stoked to see Rourke win. His speech alone would be worth the three hour sit time.

This is one of the few times, I wouldn’t be disappointed if any of the nominees won (though I would have like to have seen DiCaprio nominated for his triumphant performance in Revolutionary Road).

Maybe by saying “I think Penn gave the better performance and deserves to win?”

That’s not a very flattering picture, anyway.

I don’t get it Kris, are you advocating now that the Oscars should be a popularity contest? or some sort of fuck ups redemption prize?
What about giving it to the best performance?

Sorry Mickey, you were great in The Wrestler, and you seem like a cool dude, but this year best performance was Sean Penn’s Harvey Milk

  13. Matt Avatar

Easy: I watched The Wrestler. I’m sure Mickey’s a great guy, but gimme ANYTHING but that movie any day.

sirio11: Stupid comments. I’ve been on the record all year saying that Rourke’s performance was tops this season, so no, I’m not advocating for a popularity contest. Just tossing some fun spirit into the proceedings with this pic.

While I would certainly get enjoyment out of seeing Rourke win, I preferred Penn (as I did “Milk” in general).

However, I’m not that big on the whole “Rourke comeback” thing because, I suppose, I wasn’t around to see him when he was here originally.

Also, “The Wrestler” makes me sad because I hope Darren Aronofsky doesn’t lose the style that he had on his first three movies. I’d truly miss that if he did.

  30. sirio11 Avatar

Guy Lodge, you mean as opposed to these compelling arguments:

“How can you say no to this guy?”

    “super cool dude”

    “Rourke is the shit.”

“those Milk posters were kinda cheesy”

    “Wrestler > Milk”

    “Rourke > Penn”

“Mickey Rourke is the motherfucking truth.”

I sure every poster here could go on to make a better argument(even an essay) about a phrase, but we don’t have a movie blog and most of us make a living doing something else; I guess by now you In Contention guys should be used to these kind of “arguments who doesn’t amount to much”, so, don’t understand the need to pick on somebody in particular.

Brian: Thanks. In my heart, I’m eating it. (And washing it down with a good Merlot. From the bottle.)

Sirio: Fair point, but it wasn’t my intention to single someone out — I was merely explaining the uselessness of such back-and-forthing.

PS. If you think I make a living from doing this, you are sadly mistaken.

“PS. If you think I make a living from doing this, you are sadly mistaken.”

Of course not, just to point out we wish to have more time to dedicate to movie analysis. But, then, we decide what to do with our time right. For now, I just fill my need for movies watching them (several times), commenting them with my wife/friends and reading good movie sites like yours and Sasha’s and occasionally posting a comment.

Penn was the best actor this year. Not saying Rourke’s praise is purely sentimental, but I sure think that for some people it is. It is obvious who more people WANT to win the award, and I don’t think you can say that exclusive analysis of the performance alone is the only thing taken into account by some people. And I feel that sadly this will decide the race. Sorry Sean.

What is the fucking obsession with Mickey Rourke? He looks like a white-trash burn victim and he’s given a handful of adequate performances over the years. He does one bit of good work and everyone goes ape-shit. And, please, don’t act like The Wrestler features some kind of hallmark, iconic performance from Rourke. He’s good, that’s it. Seriously, is there anyone out there that thinks “Randy the Ram” stacks up to the likes of Michael Corleone, Jake Gittes, Hannibal Lecter, R.P. McMurphy, I mean FUCKFUCKFUCK I could go on and on and on about this – what is this fucking obsession with a burn victim loser degenerate drug addict fuck up??????????

Thank u Allen….. the real question is how could u honor this man? Seth Rogen got onstage at the Golden Globes and made a joke that he had just done a “lot” of cocaine with Mickey Rourke…. then he is photographed downing champagne while holding his BAFTA?? The Academy already sucks it big time this year with all the Reader nonsense…. I say give Milk everything… and if u guys give Rourke the trophy…. U MADE THE WRONG CALL!

I don’t think his performance was great. He was good but not memorable. He’s still playing The Wrestler in that photo, I think. This guy is a loser, I just don’t understand your love for this “dudes” that think they’re “cool”.

Hope Sean Penn wins Best Actor!

  41. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Mike, you have no idea what you’re talking about. And must be about 12 years old. “Dudes” that think they’re “cool?” Speaking as someone who’s actually MET the guy you’re talking about, a couple of times now, no, the guy doesn’t have that aura about him at all.

    Stop projecting.

You’re right Kris. Apparently most of the site’s readers are members from the First Church of God and commenting on this site is their only break from reading the bible.

Jesus people, live a little. God forbid any actor enjoy life a little.

And Allen, you are plain and simple a complete idiot. If we have to explain it to you, then you never were even near the boat to miss it.

  43. sirio11 Avatar

So, either you like Rourke or you’re a bible lover. Damn, there you have a really stupid argument. Sort of amazing people making bible straw man fallacies, point out to people who disagree with them as making stupid comments.

Some of us just don’t understand why some actors must have special Oscar points because of their loser/fuck up status, that for some weird reason appeals to some people (and using another Kris ad hominem fallacy, stop projecting !!).

Also forgive us if we are not amused by a drinking champagne photo, sure if I was 15 probably I will be amused, but for me it generates just a meh reaction, good for him, seems to be happy but besides that, what the hell is fucking special about that.

I love Rourke, I’m not a bible lover (hell, I’m not even religious) and I think Penn is the best actor by an astronomical unit.

  44. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

sirio: Your first sentence is painfully simple. Go back and read the reasons for what I’ve posted and you’ll get the gist of a balanced argument.

And I don’t think anyone here has said Rourke deserves Oscar point for his former “fuck up” status. Again, if you knew how to read, you’d see that we’re arguing in favor of his performance simply being the year’s best.

I can’t believe I have to hold some people’s hands through a debate. Did you really write everything that follows “also forgive us?”

  45. Scott Ward Avatar
    Scott Ward

Sirio11, if you had even read my comments earlier, you would see that I also think Penn is better and that some, bu certainly not all, of the love for Rourke stems from his “fuck it” attitude. The point that Kris is making and the point that most people realize is that it is quite refreshing to see an actor of his caliber not regarding what people might say about him. He’s not just stepping up to the podium and thanking the usual people in the usual manner and then going out on the red carpet and incessantly smiling for the camera, like nearly all other actors feel they need to do in order to keep a clean profile. He’s expressing what can best be described as humanly qualities, not the robotic ones of other celebrities. And no, no one is justifiably saying that he should win because of his personality, but he doesn’t try to hide his inhibitions, and that is why we appreciate him. So that’s what is so special about that. If you fail to see that then you obviously failed to fully understand these similar qualities that his character possesses. His character tried to a degree to adhere to society’s views, in other words conformity, but this ultimately trapped him and the only escape, the only freedom he found, was in the ring. That’s why many see it as an overall depressing and sad story, but actually it is a tale of triumph. So that’s why someone like Rourke is so appealing. I certainly agree with you that this shouldn’t decide the Oscar race, but if you completely fail to see its importance, then to use some Floyd, welcome to the machine.

  46. Mike V. Avatar
    Mike V.

I agree with Sirio. Penn should win Best Actor, not only because he gave the best performance of the year but because he gave extraordinary depth to the film, playing a “human being” as he said in his SAG speech. Rourke gave a decent performance, but the character is extremely similar to himself [wrestler/boxer, drug addict, loser, fucked up career, roct star]. What’s so great about playing yourself? Where is the versatility, the creativity, etc?

If I was a Bible lover, I would hate Milk and Sean Penn for playing a queer. I’m sorry but when you go to film school, you learn how to analize a performance in different ways; My conclusion is that Sean Penn should win Best Actor by a million miles.

I like to post in this kind of blogs but sometimes people are just too aggressive. My opinion is not more important than yours so what’s the big deal? I just think you are not taking to account what the real reason to give an award is: it’s about performances, not about personal lives, sympathy or “overdues”[AKA Kate Winslet].

I’m 12 years old because I don’t like Mickey Rourke’s Wrestler. Great analysis.

Don’t take awards too seriously, people. Do I need to love Mickey Rourke, Penelope Cruz and Anne Hathaway to receive a respectful threatment here?

  47. sirio11 Avatar

    Scott,

First of all, thank you for your very well written comment.

I basically agree with all you say about Mickey, maybe I just don’t think he’s that unique. For example, you say:

“The point that Kris is making and the point that most people realize is that it is quite refreshing to see an actor of his caliber not regarding what people might say about him.”

Do you really think Sean Penn gives a damn about what people may say about him?

and I could name many actors as non robotic as you can expect, this refreshing didn’t start with Mickey nor will end with him.
I have been always ready to praise the defiant ones, but for some reason saying fuck n times on public and drinking champagne from the bottle, while I enjoy seeing people being themselves, such actions do not strike me as real (and hard) anti establishment positions, to be honest I find them quite easy, because probably I have done them myself. There are (and has been) several people really standing up for bigger causes and taking real risks by doing it, but I guess people just prefer the cool ones.
And I totally agree with your excellent analysis of his character in The Wrestler.

  48. BurmaShave Avatar
    BurmaShave

Mike V. in film school do they teach you how to spell the word analyze? Not that you would know about film school.

Some of you people are truly insane. And in my opinion, playing someone close to yourself and doing it as naked and as deeply and Mickey did it is one of the bravest things an actor can do.

  49. Guy Lodge Avatar

My god, some of these comments are hilarious. It just increases my desire for Rourke to win, so we can see what hysteria people manage to drum up then.

And Burma, your last comment is spot on. Anyone who thinks it’s somehow easy to draw upon one’s own personal fuck-ups for such a raw, unflattering semi-self-portrait is just being obtuse.
