Are you different?

Written by

Okay, by now, most Oscarwatchers and prognozticators are expecting the same five titles to pop up in the Best Picture category: “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”

But not everyone.

My questiont o you is, if you are predicting a DIFFERENT lineup, what is it?  I figure there are only so many combinations that can come out of the sane awards-watching universe, but I’m prepared to be surprised.  Tell us your different angle on the season.  I’m curious…

I think there will be one surprise. But I am still going with:
The curious case of Benjamin Button
    Slumdog milionaire
    The Dark knight
    Milk
    Frost/Nixon
TDK or Milk will be replaced by Reader or Wrestler. :(

    Slumdog Millionaire

There’s always been a surprise. And there won’t be a 5/5 pic/director match. I think those Oscar pundits are foolish and don’t really know the game, if they think that the Academy’s going to do what the precursors say. I’m just saying: Jason Reitman, Atonement, Paul Greengrass, Letters from Iwo Jima, Munich, Mike Leigh, etc. Those were the major categories, and there’s been huge upsets every single year.

All of my dreams would come true if The Dark Knight and The Reader both somehow made it in.

  9. Chris Avatar

Although I actually think it could be “The Reader” instead of “Revolutionary Road”. And if they’re going completely wild “Wall-E” will make it in instead of “Frost/Nixon” as well.

I’m leaning towards a snup of The Dark Knight in either picture or director. But I can’t figure out where. I guees it makes most sense for it to be nominated for best picture and not director than the other way around.

So right now I’m saying: Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Milk and Slumdog with Stephen Daldry as the lone director and a snup for Nolan.

I also have some kind of feeling that Milk might not make it in both picture and director. But I guess the problem is simply that I just don’t see a 5/5.

So after going through all sort of posibilities I’m just waiting for a 5/5 to happen :-D

I think Wall-E will make it and either Frost/Nixon or Milk will be dumped. I really hope its not Milk

    Slumdog
    Wall-E

I guess that after the British Academy snubbed “The Dark Knight”, the film is out. It could be the biggest omission in years, but still we have to consider that WALL*E was not eligible with most of the guilds, like the writers or the directors. Then, it could have a strong showing at the Oscars, even with a BP nomination. My prediction:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    Frost/Nixon
    MIlk
    Slumdog Millionaire
    WALL*E

In the director category Andrew Stanton will be replaced by either Nolan or even Arronofsky. That would be fine!

I’m not really predicting this, but my alternate lineup would be:

    Slumdog Millionaire
    Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    The Dark Knight
    Wall-E
    The Reader

  14. Adam Smith Avatar
    Adam Smith

    Alternatively, swap Frost/Nixon with Milk.

Though I’d prefer to just see Milk make it–Milk’s very good on its own, but you can’t have Frosted Flakes/Nixon without Milk.

Yes, I just came up with that pun, please don’t hurt me for it.

I have decided to omit Frost/Nixon in favor of Wall-E.

    1) because we have no idea how Oscar will respond due to the fact that Wall-E has been ineligible for most guilds.

    2) there is a level of passion for the film that Frost/Nixon is lacking.

    3) because it feels time that Pixar got their due. Last year, Ratatouille received the most nominations of a Pixar film yet and I get a strong feeling that Wall-E is going to go one further.

    4) because I have been predicting it since the beginning of the year and I could not live with myself if I dropped it from my picture line up and then it received the nomination.

Of course, I will probably be completely wrong and thursday morning will give us the exact same five films we have been seeing for the past month. But one can hope.

I held out on the obvious five for ages, but had to give in. If I’m not mistaken, the PGA, DGA, WGA and ACE have never lined up like that — it’s an ominous sign.

I always thought “Frost/Nixon” would miss out, as I couldn’t see it getting #1 votes, but people in the industry seem to really like it. I have no idea why.

I’m starting to think if anything can spoil, it’s “The Wrestler,” but I’m not getting my hopes up.

I have a sneaking suspicion that The Wrestler will sneak into the top 5, and Aronofsky will get a Best Director nom.

    So here goes….

    Slumdog
    The Dark Knight
    Benjamin Button
    Frost/Nixon
    The Wrestler

I’ll be ridiculously happy if TDK, Frost/Nixon, and The Wrestler make it in.

Enough with the WAll E. There’s a category for animated films and that’s where it belongs.

There will be a surprise. The Wrestler will kick Frost/Nixon out.

But…it would be so wonderful if Revolutionary Road sneaked in. Such an unappreciated masterpiece that wowed even me who disliked American Beauty.

My 5th slot is going to Doubt, and here’s why if you look at the history of the oscars its extremely rare for a film to get 3 or possibly 4 acting nominations and a screenplay nom, and not get nominated for Picture.

I have the feeling that Benjamin Button will be snubbed.

My best picture predictions looks this way

FROST/NIXON picture, director, actor, adapted screenplay, film editing 5 NOMS.

THE DARK KNIGHT picture, director, supp actor, cinematography, film editing, production design, original score, sound mixing, sound editing, make up 10 NOMS.

MILK picture, director, actor, supp actor, original screenplay, film editing 6 NOMS.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE picture, director, actor (Dev Patel a la Keisha Castle Hughes), adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, original score, original song 8 NOMS.

THE READER picture, actress, supp actor, adapted screenplay, cinematography, original score 6 NOMS.

Looking at RT, “The Wrestler” and “WALL-E”, two great films, are CLEARLY more praised than Button and deservedly so. But, for some reason, their odds of sneaking in are minimal. I hate how the Academy is afraid of carrying a negative stigma. Do something bold!

Many people compare this or that film’s Oscar odds to those of Atonement’s — you must remember that, as opposed to The Reader, Atonement had by far the strongest buzz of all the films going into the race (and I’m talking late August through November, before No Country for Old Men and a handful of other stronger contenders surfaced, and it started fading through the awards cycle to the point that, on nominations’ eve, noone was sure it would manage to nab a best picture nomination at all.

I see no film like that this year. Benjamin Button has lost the frontrunner status but it has been continuously nominated everywhere; Milk has maintained a level of nominations and awards for the film and Sean Penn that just might or just might not ensure a nomination; Frost/Nixon and The Dark Knight were on shaky legs long before, as they are now, and the others, namely WALL-E, The Reader, Doubt, Revolutionary Road and Gran Torino, could (unsurprisingly and unceremoniously) knock any of these four contenders, especially the latter two, out of the game.

But in the end, I somehow don’t see any of the nominees or non-nominees “this year’s Atonement/Dreamgirls”.

Giving a couple of underdogs a chance. I don’t expect Curious Case, even though I loved it, and I really don’t expect The Dark Knight in any real film-loving society, but it seems clear they’re going to cater to the dumb masses this time and nominate an unworthy film.

I’m pretty sure there isn’t going to be a surprise nomination

    Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    Frost Nixon
    Milk
    The Dark Knight
-these are the five that have the best chance of being nominated

If there is a surprise The Dark Knight Milk or Frost Nixon all can be booted

    1. WALL-E has the best chance of any of the other movies to get a spot
    2. The Wrestler might be the dark horse but most likely it won’t happen
    3. The Reader and Doubt still have a good shot at it too

  47. King Avatar
    King

    1. Slumdog – the assured front runner
    2. Ben Button – outstanding team behind it, numerous nominations, AND most importantly the production team that got snubbed last year with “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”
    3. The Dark Knight – respected as the big money maker, BUT most importantly…the general audience’s choice a la “Juno”, “Sunshine”, “Crash”
    4. WALL-E – has a great deal of underdog status at its side. (Think 1991 with both “Silence of the Lambs” and “Beauty and the Beast”) plus this film looks like its going to get at the very least 6 nominations (even without BP) that’s a new record for animated film…why not go all the way and include it in the top five…if it lacks one thing its that not very much people have ANYTHING against and most really like it…
    5. The last slot…Frost/Nixon was a well made film but I feel some will think it lacks emotional punch. Milk (although treasured) got snubbed from mainstream HFPA but also indie loving IFP…throw that in with no BAFTA director and supposed homophobia in the Academy, I think we’re looking at Far From Heaven not Brokeback Mountain (even though I know this simplicity is absurd). Gran Torino and The Reader have entered too late. Rev. Road has no BAFTA,BFCA, Guilds, AFI…very little support. So…it might come down to one movie most academy members have seen because of the buzz surrounding the performance…
    5. THE WRESTLER
I think it’s the eventual winner at the IFP BP (which since 2003 has made the lineup) and I have heard that screenings have gone over well…

    We’ll see

    I hope ‘Frost/Nixon’ doesn’t get in, but — it’s f-ing Ron Howard.

Plus if ‘Gran Torino’ gets in, I’m giving up on movies.

How ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Che’ aren’t going to be nominated is disgusting — easily the two best American films of the year.

  49. Leone Avatar
    Leone

Slumdog Millionaire – the obvious front runner at this point, the little movie that could, so now will be the subject of “backlash” due to its front runner status and many trying to point out why the little movie that could, can’t. it’s getting nominated but can it win?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – nipping at Slumdog’s heels, the old-fashioned epic with the modern twist of using technology to further the storyline, the “achievement” slot. If voters vote for achievement, this one might have it all but sewn up.

Milk – the emotional film, the one that made you laugh, cry. It’s an important slot.

Beyond those three, I don’t think anything else is a “lock.”

It’s the following films (in this order) in a fight for the 4th and 5th slots:

THE READER – not a great film but voters are responding to it. Perhaps it was because of low expectations.

THE DARK KNIGHT – can the below-the-line voters put this in the top 5?

FROST/NIXON – does it have enough of a “passion” vote for voters to put it in their #1 or #2 position on their ballots?

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD – this one has the passion factor. people either love it or hate it. So if 20% of the Academy voters pop it in their #1 or #2 slot, precursors or not, the film gets in

DOUBT – actors have been supporting this one throughout. actors are the largest branch of the academy – let’s see if that pushes this one into the top 5

  50. Ben M. Avatar

I’m predicting Wall-E over Dark Knight. Dark Knight could well get in there, but I’m hearing it is not the kind of film that is going to get a lot of #1 votes so I could also see it falling to some films that have strong support like Gran Torino (which I would be happy with even if I wouldn’t personally nominate it) or The Reader (which would be a bad choice IMO).
